Welllll, there's no shortage of chain/discount auto parts stores...
I do all my own work on my equipment and my trucks, which adds up to two Chevrolets and two Toyotas whose parts mostly come from the chains...

Considering the law is pretty clear, I think Pep Boys is gonna be out some serious cash. It would be nice if that guy got enough to buy his house back before it gets sold. I wonder if any of Pep Boys' execs are in DC today with their comrades.

The sheriff's department here terminated a guy short of finishing probation because he wouldn't give adequate notice of his active duty training periods. There were other issues, but announcing he had a two week training obligation starting the next day really pissed off the sheriff.
He tried to insist he too just found out about his reserve training, but didn't realize his supervisor would call his reserve unit to veryify that information. So, lying to his supervisor sort of compounded the difficulty.

That's totally messed up and I hope Pep Boys pays the servicemen/women for this wrongdoing.

If it had been an isolated case, and a regular employee in a store, it might have been just the local manager, in which case Pep Boys could have been in the clear.
But this does not fly with this veteran. Where's that "Who ya boycottin' " thread? I need to add somebody to my list!

All I can say is that if Pep Boys does not have signed reviews or letters or reprimand for his "poor" performance, then they are in deep dookie, and this guy will be getting a nice payday for his family.
I'm not one for lawsuits, but this one I think is justified.

During the first Gulf War a manager at, believe it or not, the National Rifle Association attempted to, or at least threatened to, terminate a reservist if he left for duty.
That didn't go over very well with the higher ups, especially after the individual threatened no only to file a lawsuit, but also to go to the local newspapers, the Washington Post and the Washington Times.
You can imagine the kind of hay that both of those organizations would have made with that story.
The reservist had a job when he came back, but by the time he got back the manager was no longer there. Seems that he had been terminated.

If the facts are as reported, then this guy is in for a big win. The law simply couldn't be more clear.
I'm thinking that Pep Boys is gonna lose on two counts here: they'll have to cough up cash to this gentleman as well as the associated legal fees, and they're gonna take it in the shorts BIG TIME in the PR department once word gets out they let go of an employee who had to go serve his country.

Obviously some regional manager hasn't been attending his legal training.
I suspect he will be unemployed real soon.

Stupidity, on sale, in aisle 4! Military discrimination, special price today! :barf:
I hope he wins big-time. This should give other stores a lesson..
If it were a mom and pop store, and he being gone means they have to replace him, I'd understand... But not pep boyz..
Manny, Moe, Jack... be prepared to be in the poor house dudes!
Boycott list definitely!

If this were a Pep boy corporate policy, then maybe a boycott would be needed. But you can bet big bucks it's not. This is some undertrained, underpaid guy working 80 hours a week making decisions he's not prepared for. The guy is wrong, but it doesn't mean he's evil.
I'm sure the soldier will get his job back, as he should. One phone call from the Military Assistance lawyers should take care of it.
Before you assume this manager is some sort Al Qaeda operative or traitor, think about this: How many of you who are criticizing this guy have run a business and understand how many areas of life you are expected to be an expert in, and how many hours you work, and how many responsiblities everyone shoves off on you?
Do you know how many decisions such people have to make every day? And not just about how many wrenches to have in stock, but in areas such as health insurance, personnel, marketing, janitorial, Americans with Disabilities Act, pollution, checking for citizenship status, drug testing, worker's compensation, hiring the right mix of men and women and black and white and brown and "differently abled." No wonder no one wants to run a business anymore and everyone seems to want to get on at the post office.

As a former Pep Boys asst. manager I have little doubt that the story is true...They promoted a very stong corporate ethic (read indentured servitude) at every level; work 14 hour days & sell lotsa tires, great; let the world outside the bay doors creep in & you're toast.
No hard feelings on my part after I decided I needed a career change....Many, Moe & Jack made engineering school seem like a cakewalk.
Hopefully Mr. Balodis will come out on top.

Is there a way to email Pe Boys? A flood of negative email would be great.
