recoil spring

as a general rule what effect does does the function of the recoil spring have on a pistol not going into battery? And is it usually a weak spring that causes the problem or too strong a spring.

correct. weak spring won't bring pistol into battery.

Things that will prevent a semi-auto from going into full battery.
Weak recoil spring.
Too much extractor tension.
Burs on the extractor.
Rough extractor
Rough breech face.
Oversize ammo.
Bullets seated too far out.
Short chamber.
Over tight chamber.
Short chamber throat.
Barrel is improperly fitted to the slide and/or frame.
