As stated in the Barnaul thread I was playing with a chrony to day so I'll post some more data. I bought some of this new Federal Spitfire ammo the other day at Gander Mountain, it says that it has a MV of 1500FPS with a 31 gr bullet. I am assuming that is out of a rifle but I got some impressive results out of my 22/45.

Those seem impressive figures.... but that lighter bullet will of course speed things up.

Couple of approx energy calcs - using your average FPS figures.

The Spitfire is about - 101.5 ft lbs

And the MiniMag about - 87.5 ft lbs

That makes a convincing win for the Fed ammo. Impessive it seems. If accuracy is not compromized then an assumed flatter trajectory and that ME could be well useful. Thx for the figures - this is a round I must try out.

NoHarm-

You are comparing limes to lemons: The CCI load equivalent to the Fed. Spitfire is the Stinger. Mini-Mags are just CCI's standard High Velocity .22's. I might add that my Ruger Mk. II loves them. But it also feeds Stingers and I might be inclined to use those if I was forced to shoot anything bigger than a jack rabbit with a .22.

Should you chrono Stingers from a 5.5-inch barrel Ruger pistol (auto), I'd love to see the results. I think they'd compare well with Spitfire, which I will look for. Alas, the local dealers have a rather poor selection of .22 ammo, odd for a big city. I have trouble finding most Federal ammo.

Thx LS - I was guilty of ''seeing'' the mini-mags, as being Stingers - I have not used any hyper vel.22's for so long I have gotten outa touch (add some senility to that too!). ;)

Does anyone have any chrony date for Aguilas Super maximums? They are supposed to hit 1750 FPS from a rifle, and ive heard from several people that the velocity is so high that even the round nose lead bullets expand when they hit tissue.

Thanks!

I will do that, hopefully, next weekend. I was more impressed with the SD of the Mini's. A SD of 6 FPS is consistancy that would be great for center fire ammo. Yea, I knew that Mini's and the Spitfires were in two different classes. I actually ran some Velocitors across the chrono and was shocked to find out that they were only about 100 FPS faster but I didn't get that data recorded.

I find this stuff fun and amazing at the same time. I did some Gold Dot tests out of my G-23 it was real consistant at 1100 FPS but I didn't get that recorded either.

I think I might add a section to my website for this info.

I'll try to find those too! I think my local range has those.

I bought 2 brick of Spitfire ammo to check it out. Some of the pistols we used did not like it at all. We have 4 different Walther P22s which all hated the spitfire. FTF, FTE were rampant and no one could fire a whole magazine with out a failure of some kind. I found this strange since the P22 is suppose to like hotter ammo. My S&W 22A fired it but I had more FTF and FTE than usual with it.

All of the above weapons like Remington Gold Bullet ammo just fine. So now I use the remaining Spitfire 22lr in my rifles. The rifles like it . . . :)

Here are some Stinger velocities:
1. 4" S&W 34 "kit gun"--1225fps- 6 shots -15 sd. (sd not really valid on 6 shots)
Out of the same gun Remington yellow jackets-1131 fps- 6 shots, Rem thunderbolts-961 fps., T22 std velocity-908fps.

All the folowing data is for 10 shots each out of a Walther p-22, 3.5"bbl

Thunderbolt-903 fps-- extream spread 140fps--sd 40fps
CCI blaser--981fps---es--------------49fps---sd18fps
T-22------890fps----es--------------48fps---sd15fs
yellow Jkt-1047fps es-------------98fps---sd31fps
Stinger----1175fps---es---------------89fps---sd29fps
Spitfire--- 1045fps----es--------------91fps---sd25fps

Stinger is in a class by itself, Spitfire and Yellow jacket are about the same. Out of my "T" Bolt 24" rifle Stinger is 1665fps, Spitfie is 1405fps. Nick

When did they start making the Spitfires again ? I used to use them years ago, then they were discontinued.

I have no Idea! I can't even find any info on them at all. I bought them at Gander Mtn. for $1.99/50 which is steep for .22lr but I was hooked by the 1500 FPS claim they made.

Now THAT'S! damned impressive for low cost ammo! I'd be curious to see how Green Tag or RWS compare to that.

It was mentioned that fiding 22ammo selection was hard. Though I live in Atlanta, I order all of my ammo online. I like Graf & Sons for 22 and shotgun. I reload all my centerfire pistol and rifle ammo except for surplus.
