Since I prefer the 9mm over .45, and have the mags and holster for this thing already, despite it being kinda ugly, I'm thinking (again  ) if I really need a 1911 or just get wunnadese?

Why fight it?
You know you will end up with both of them anyway.

No, you don't "really need" a 1911. What you "really need" is whatever you like and are confortable with. This is a choice for you, and no one else to make. As long as what you pick is a quality piece and reliable not much else matters. Otherwise there would only be one gun on the market. If one didn't have a choice why have more?

The 1911 has many fans, and for good reason. I've never really enjoyed shooting them better than several other guns. So no, certainly not a gun arsenal necessity.

A collection just isn't a collection without at least one 1911!

But you've already had a very nice quasi-1911... What exactly didn't you like about the Wilson?

But... but.. you don't shoot all that well with the venerable .45...

I believe those were the words that a certain individual uttered at one point in time.;)

[You know that your going to get one, there is just no denying the inevitable. A grey n' black, Wilson CQB 1911 is in your future. ] :neener:

Cratz, it didn't fit in my hand right. The frontstrap was too blocky. I do like the singlestacks but on my best 1911 day, I still don't shoot as well as a so-so Beretta day.

Aren't we well past "need" at this stage?
How about Browning HiPowers?

Is that steel Vertec going to be a production gun, or a limited run like the Billenium?

At any rate if its trigger is the equal of a 1911, why bother?

I'll answer you question like this:

Needing a 1911 is like needing a oxygen to breath. :D

A 1911?

Nah... ;)

Another P7?

Maybe.. :)

A USP Tactical/Expert in 45ACP with all the bells and whistles?

Most definitely! :D

C'mon, Skunk... you've our point guy in the ultimate in tacticality, so you've got to live the part! :D:D:D

I like the 1911 platform. I shoot well with it. But I'm open to other platforms. Your P7, Beretta and, shudder, USP are fine if they work for you. I'd love to get a P7 someday and would never dream of selling my Taurus PT99.

If you like the Berettas, get it. You could always have Ernie install his trigger and do the trigger job for it/them.

Shoot what you shoot well. ;)

I fell off the 1911 bandwagon a month ago and I'm already thinking I need a custom. I think at some point, I will have a custom 1911. Until then, I'm staying away from the production ones. The ones I've owned just did nothing for me.
Skunk, complete the 9mm theme you've got cookin' in your head and move on to the next acquisition (maybe that AR ;) )

I'm sure you have enough modern autoloaders Skunk. Try one designed by our "Patron Saint", John Moses Browning. Its about time I think.

There's something about a basic 1911 (with no extraneous mods like a Colt M1991A1 or SA Mil-Spec) or a standard BHP that exude a certain seriousness that most modern autos seem to lack.

I think you have answered your own question. Have you tried a genuine Colt 1911? So many 1911 manufacturers use a receiver that has a blocky feel. The Colt has a much slimmer and more comfortable profile, at least in my hands. But if it does not sit well in your hand and you do not shoot it well, why waste your time and money? The Beretta 92 does not fit my hand well, so I do not own one. Should I buy one? For me, the answer is no, since it is not a comfortable firearm in my hands.

My second pistol was a Kimber Custom Target Stainless II. I sold it in disgust because I wasn't used to a $950 "custom" pistol failing.

Skunk,
You have said yourself numerous times you didn't have good luck with your first 1911. So why push for another one right now. You say you like 9mm, its time to give in and just go to a glock. I gotta try!!!!

Fact is, you don't need a 1911. You've probably got all the guns you "need" already - you don't need that new Beretta either. Truth be told, a single Ruger P90 probably fulfills your "needs".

And if you can't find a 1911 that shoots for you, and the Berettas do, then the Beretta is a better use of your time and money - whether you really need it or not.

Full stop. End of story.

Of course, people may think you are somehow defective if you can't appreciate the merits of a good 1911...

If you like collecting or acquiring firearms, I think everybody needs to have a nice basic 1911 in the collection. Like a Springfield Mil Spec, Colt 1991A1 or whatever. IMO, they work very very well and they just ooooozzzz cool nostagia.

If you just want cool uber-tactical weapons that are the best modern technology can give then I would probably say no. You won't be happy with the 1911.

I am pretty diversified in my firearms interests and get the warm fuzzies by a wide range of types of firearms. I get in the mood for an ohh so tactical, 150 years ago, Single Action Army some days while I want to break out the 1911 and Garand other days. Then there are the SIG/HK/Wonderplastic days.

I like guns all different kinds of guns for many different not necessarily tactical or useful reasons. For me a 1911 was a must have. I have guns I don't shoot as well as my serious social hardware that I still love and some I like even more then the ones I shoot the best. It all comes from that intagible quality that I will call the ZEN of SHOOTING.

By the way I just got my first P7M8. It cleaned up real nice and feels just about perfect. So I am not totally un-tactical. :D

Congrats! So is it all you expected it to be?

I'm rethinking this SA Vertec thing. It's like an ugly Billenium without carbon fiber grips. :( I'll score me a Billenium when I leave California.

I haven't gotten to the range yet but so far it is all that and more. I am amazed at how well made it is and after breaking it down and cleaning it I don't see what the big deal is with people complaining they are difficult to clean.

I really think this is one of the best handgun designs I have ever seen, especially for the left handed or ambidextrous shooter. My buddie is a leftie and this thing would be perfect for him.

I have 100 rounds of 9mm just begging to be shot but I don't think I will get to the range for a few days. I might try to sneak out of work a little early one day this week though....shhhh don't tell anybody.
