Handgun n00b Question

I'm pretty new to handguns. I can count all the different types I've actually fired on one hand (Vektor SP-2, Walther P22, Seecamp .32, Bersa .380, Lone Eagle .308).

Back when I got my first pistol (the Vektor), I would empty a mag, drop it, slide a fresh one in, hit the slide release, and keep blasting away. However, when I use the Bersa, I would drop the empty mag, shove a new one in, and the slide would slide back forward "on its own" (chambering another round). The only place I've seen this is in video games :p , but was later able to determine that the sheer force at which I had shoved the mag was enough to "pop" the slide off the lever.

What I'm wondering is: Is this normal, and does this hurt the gun? :uhoh:

I would imagine it's normal. It happens frequently with my Glock 19 when I slam the magazine home hard. Could be handy, but is definitely nothing to count on.

I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I just bought a Bersa last week. I've noticed that it doesn't take much movement of the slide release lever to release the slide. Any chance your thumb is resting on the lever as you insert a new magazine?

Don't think my Bersa has done this that I recall but - some semi's do seem to have quite modest slide-lock retention and I am not over surprised. I think I could make this happen with P3AT if rough with mag insertion.

I'd not worry about it too much - better, just be aware of it.

Maybe other folks have found this on certain guns.

It is normal, not really a sign of something wrong with the gun in most cases, and fairly common. Happens more with Glocks than with other guns, IME.

It's nice when it works that way because it does save time on reloads. Unfortunately, I have never met a gun that does it reliably enough to count on it happening -- it's more common that it happens once out of three or once out of four times. So enjoy the bonus time when it happens, but don't count on it.
