Am I the only one out there that hates detachable box mags on bolt actions? I want a CZ American in .308 very badly but I will never buy one as long as it has a DBM. Who's with me?

The poor DBM's totally suck.

DBM's worked for the Lee Enfield for about ten gazillion years, thru sixteentrillionmillion customers served, all made in factories spread over at least four continents.

I guess it's all in the execution.

Ah, but the SMLE magazines were not removed and replaced to reload, but only to replace a damaged magazine. They were designed to be, and were, reloaded using stripper clips.

Meanwhile, I Love DBMs, and it is one of the design features that I look for in a rifle. Alas, they are rare. Sako makes the best ones.

In a hunting rifle it's just something else to get lost. I would not buy a rifle with a detachable magazine if it were half price.

But that's just my opinion, worth what you paid for it.

Remington throats their barrels long, and keeps their DBM magazines short. The end result? If the cartridge OAL is short enough to feed reliably from the magazine, the bullet has to jump a LONG ways to engage the rifling when the trigger is pulled. Thanks for that built-in accuracy enhancement, Remington! :scrutiny:

:evil: I had a 1995 Remington 700 BDL-DM / .338 Win.Mag.
It functioned flawlessly; was accurate; and I actually cleaned it once in a while... ;)
It had a Redfield 1.75-5x20 Lo-Pro Widefield scope in Redfield JR base/rings; and I put the action into a Remington Synthetic stock that I painted with Dupli-Color Truck Bed Liner fogged with Krylon Satin Hunter Green.
I liked the gun. It could be fed with the magazine in place or by using any of the 3 magazines I bought for it. It never choked.
But, I didn't 'love' it. So, I sold it for a 'regular' BDL / .375 Ultra Mag.

But they *do* qualify as DBM, even if they're not intended to be removed for recharging.

Now that you mention it, I should clarify, I don't like them in sporting rifles but I do like them in the Enfield, AW series, and Robar M14 conversions. I meant DBMs more along the lines of the CZ or Remington variations.

The extra in the stock has some emotional appeal although I don't expect to ever shoot the gun dry. I like the more or less flush fit and I can see the appeal of the floorplate mounted detachable magazine especially for riding motorized transportation - on private property where legal and compatible with one's notions of fair chase - the ability to load and unload quickly isn't a bad thing.
