I am fairly ignorant of what you can shoot a slug out of. Of course there are the rifled barrels but what about barrels with chokes?

I have two barrels for my 870. One has an interchangable choke. The other is one I ordered from Cabelas and is an improved cylinder. I know that if i were to want to hunt with great accuracy then I should get a dedicated slug barrel. However, until the time comes when I can spend the money to get a new barrel I want to know if I can fire slugs from the imporved cylinder. What about a rifled choke. Do these actually improve the accuracy?

I have always looked at my shotguns as the ideal SHTF/bug out/ do all gun, because I always kind of believed that you could switch from bird shot to 00 buck to 000 buck to slugs. ISsthis true and if not what needs to be done to be able to accomplish at least part of this?

Most folks can get acceptable slug accuracy from a bead sighted barrel out to 50 yards. A given slug from a given barrel with choke tubes may do better with a rifled choke tube. Unfortunately, it's impossible to tell in advance. Try it and see is a frequent mantra of the shotgun cogniscienti.

As to what needs to be done, mostly it's not the hardware that glitches. Shoot lots and the software self-debugs...

I shoot slugs through the IC tube with my Remington Model 11. I also added a receiver sight and blade on a ramp for the front. It shoots into 3" at 50 yds. Most Foster slugs will do better with a IC tube. Some like the rifled choke tube. The sabots may need a rifled barrel. If you want a dedicated slug barrel for your 870, you can buy a fully rifled barrel. Sabots only with it. With the barrels you have you can add sights if you want. They work well with slugs and work well for me at sporting clays.

The general rule is rifled barrel- sabots first, then foster slugs.
Smooth barrel- Improved cyl, foster slugs. The rifled choke tube was useless for me.
