Democratic Suicide
When will the Dems start winning again? When they start living and speaking like normal folks.
We are in unsure times amid a controversial war. Yet the American people are not swayed by the universities, the major networks, the New York Times, Hollywood, the major foundations, and NPR. All these bastions of doctrinaire liberal thinking have done their best to convince America that George W. Bush, captive to right-wing nuts and Christian fanatics, is leading the country into an abyss. In fact, a close look at a map of red/blue counties nationwide suggests that the Democrats are in deepening trouble.
??Why? In a word, Democratic ideology and rhetoric have not evolved from the 1960s, although the vast majority of Americans has — and an astute Republican leadership knows it.

Democrats = Urban, Republicans = Rural on electoral map, not really that difficult. I really don't see the calls from the right for the left to change and be come Republican-Lite ever comming true. Quite frankly it's a stupid idea.

When we see Democrats speaking and living like normal folks — expressing worry that the United States must return to basic education and values to ensure its shaky preeminence in a cutthroat world, talking of one multiracial society united by a rare exceptional culture of the West rather than a salad bowl of competing races and tribes, and apprising the world that we are principled abroad in our support of democratic nations and quite dangerous when attacked — they will be competitive again.
Since they will not do that, they will keep losing — no matter how much the economy worries, the war frightens, and the elite media scares the American people.
We Americans never have had any use for self-appointed aristocrats—and I sincerely hope we never will.

Not a bad essay, but I don't put much stock in these things.
Remember, the pendulum swings both ways.
The Democrats will find themselves back in power some day. And they likely won't change their rhetoric much while getting there. The passage of Time will do most of the work for them.
And then the pendulum will swing back...

I can remember when Democrats were labeled as deficit spenders. The Republicans have now earned that title. That sounds like a recipe for slow suicide to me. ;)

I personally don't think that this generational(baby boomer) crowd of Democrats will return to the elected majority in my lifetime. They don't have any new ideas and their hyper liberal political base is way out of the mainstream. The next generation(Harold Ford-TN) will be smarter about guns and other hot button social issues that got their elders tossed out office in 1994.
There are just some lines(guns) that shouldn't be crossed and I doubt if the majority of Dems will be paying attention to Sarah Brady and her crowd anymore after what she cost them.

Deficeit spending is an effective means of stimulating the economy. Look at what WWII did for us in the depression. Look what it did for Germany.
I personally think that Bush is doing what he needs to hold on to power. Remember that most of the waste he is perpetrating can easily be rolled back, such as invasions, security measures, etc. I would be more worried if he was using an economic downturn as an excuse to take money from the rich and give it to the poor. Instead he is slightly lowering taxes and spending us into deep debt. Surely even the most ideologically pure among us can realize that the cuts that eventually come will be very bad for socialism.
I am disappointed in the senior drug benefit thing. That was a straight handout to the pharma industry. I personally think no child left behind was a stroke of genius, but I will let history bear me out on this one.

Unfortunately in this day of its not my money its the governments money mentality, a CUT in spending is a decrease in the percentage that spending is going to increase.
ie.- If a program is going to get a 5% increase in next years budget, then a cut would be only giving them a 3% increase.
Only in Washington, is an increase a decrease.
I'm sorry, but after watching the Republicans back down yet again with important budget cuts, and not cutting usless pork from the budgets you have two choices in Washington . . .
Dems- Tax and Spend , Repubs- Borrow and spend.
Both parties know now that they can steal from the treasury and buy the much needed votes in their districts with pork spending.
