More on the Reserve Sergeant who Captured Illegals

I can't find it on the Net anywhere, but my morning paper has a short article saying that Mexico is considering filing a lawsuit against Sgt Haab on the basis that he "engaged in assault or illegal detention of the Mexican migrants, or caused them mental anguish."

Ain't gonna happen. If they do, they ain't gonna get a conviction. If they do, it won't mean anything. If it does, and our government enforces the conviction (or worse, allows the Mexican Goobermint to enforce it), then we're living in a world that has moved on a lot further than any of us realized. If that's the case then it's probably time to sit down and rethink exactly how we're going about "protecting" our Rights.

Remember the guy who absentmindedly took a few shotgun shells into Mexico and had his US gun-owning rights revoked because of his Mexican conviction?
Don't forget who we're dealing with here, a President who puts Mexican interests ahead of American interests, and a Supreme Court that uses case history from foreign courts to form its decisions. If you think that Bush will back this guy up I think you're wrong.

Bush won't, no; outside the People's Republic of California, however, I can't imagine an American court convicting the sergeant of anything Mexico is snivelling and whining about.

International Criminal Court is the place to watch to see if Mexico is serious.

Didn't a recent Supreme Court decision fix this problem? Matter of fact, it was even a firearms violation that was the basis for the foreign conviction. I think he's probably in the clear on owning guns in this country.

Nope. The Supremes fixed it for an American who'd been convicted of sneaking guns into Japan, but upheld the prohibition against owning firearms by a man who'd accidentally brought a round or two of ammunition into Mexico.
Far be it from me to sit here and accuse the Supremes of being totally clueless, you understand, but...

I'm not doubting your statement, but can you give me more information on the Mexico ammo case? I'd like to read the Court's opinion and see if I can reconcile the two (or, perhaps, find that one supersedes the other). PM is fine; I'll read up on things and start a new thread, rather than continuing to hijack this one. Thanks!

What the hell is happening to our country?
It "sometimes" appears they are pushing for a third world country
or it could be just plain stupidty either way we are going down a bad path.

It is a convergence of several factors:
--desire for cheap labor
--PC movement makes it hard to defend a position logically without being shouted down by Pro-PC forces
--racist movements feel emboldened and empowered to say "brown good, white bad." I'm sorry, but National Council for La Raza and MALDEF are racist because they promote an agenda for Hispanics at the expense of Anglos (instead of asking simply for no barriers to entry and for a level playing field).
--govt has moved into an era where bureaucrats and politicians believe they are the leaders of the people instead of being managers of govt.
There are more factors, but they have converged and reached a head. It is insanity to think it WRONG to say "we need to control our borders, especially if terrorists and drug distributors are sneaking across with bombs or cocaine."
All I can say is either the govt wants them to come across the border and turn America into a ThirdWorld nation, or the govt is lying when it says it takes the War on Terror or the War on Drugs seriously. I am no fan of the War on Drugs, and I would like to see it end, but it makes no sense to prosecute such a "war" and leave the borders wide open for product to flow in unabated.

Spartacus, you're right. I'm a biologist and the decoding of the human genome has shown that there is a greater genetic difference between a man and a woman than between any two men, or any two women. We're just one big happy family.
