Peep vs. Bladed V notch?

I'm trying to take an informal survey, of which iron sights people like to shoot... I'm not a scope fan, and so I like to go iron sights as I feel they are more rugged, and if I can be about 2 MOA with iron sights, I'm good to go.
So what do you all shoot better with? Bladed V notch, or Peep sights? What are some other sight pictures you guys like?

i tend to shoot much better with peep sights.

I like both. I shoot both with about the same accuracy, possibly a slight edge to the traditional sight, depending on the quality. However, the peep is faster with regards to target aquisition.
The key is having the same target picture everytime. I practiced and practiced my sight picture until I was comfortable. Then I started working on trigger squeeze.

Peep. I like the sight picture, and the rear sight is usually more adjustable than V-notch rear sights.

The military adopted the "peep" or "aperture" sight after extensive and exhaustive testing revealed that it was faster to acquire and considerably more accurate for the overwhelmingly majority (NOT all) of shooters.
I am sold on the aperture sight. However, I have known a very small number of pholks that do better with the open sight.
I like the peep because it gives you the option of extremely fast acquisition with a large aperture, and precision almost equalling a scope with a tiny pin hole aperture. you can't get that with an open sight.
To me, a "peep" sight is about the same as a 1X scope.

The peep is much Superior, especially if your eyes are bad, IF YOU USE IT PROPERLY.
I read a lot on the forums from people asking which is the proper sight picture with a peep, "In the bottom of the ring, or in the center".
The advantage of the peep is the eyes ability to automatically center the front sight in the center of the peep aperture. You "ignore" the rear peep and focus on the front. Your eye will align the rear if you allow it to do so.
This is why the peep is so much better. The eye CANNOT focus on both the front and rear as you must attempt to do with 'vee' sights.

Speaking of .22 rimfire rifles only, I much prefer peep sights for accuracy and speed.

Definately Peep Sights for me, it's just more instinctive to find the center of the circle than it is the "V"

Peep sight for sure. Mounted one on my Winchester 94 and it was worth the extra money for sure.

The fact that metallic sighted target rifles are universally equipped with peep sights pretty much tells the story! The US military abandoned open sights when it adoped the Garand in the 30's. Enough said!

I changed my Ruger 10/22 to Williams firesight with a peep rear, and the accuracy is incredible!
I find peeps to be very close to scopes personally as well.
I saw Runt shoot my Mauser with the V notch, and I always thought the gun was in accurate, but in her hands, it was very accurate. I think probably the sights didn't work that well for me...
I shoot pretty well with my M1A... I like the sights on it.

I have shot submoa groups with both types. I kind of think that the open sights have a small advantage since they seem to have the same accuracy potential as peeps, but with a typically shorter sight radius.
The peeps are faster and help out with less than perfect eyes.

I'd considered about installing a peep sight on my AK-47, but Im wondering it being a AK, the rear sights are mounted middle ways on the ak, do you all think peep sight would work as well on a ak?
Im thinking a peep sight, should be closer to the stock in order to be able to view front sight through the little peep/ hole & view your target properly and fast.

Another vote for the peep sight. Can't say that my group sizes differ much between the different styles but I do find peeps much easier to use.

At this point, I prefer the open "V" type of sights.

For target shooting, peep.
For hunting I prefer the traditional v notch. Its mainly because I've logged more time with it and can sight it faster especially if the target is moving.

Peep.
Buckhorn sights (v-notch) are a tool of the devil.

i find peep/aperture sights work the best for me because i don't have to concisously align the front sight with the rear...isn't the eyeball, and the subconsious mind, a great thing. my personal favorite is the rotatary sight on hk rifles, followed by the fold up ladder sights on an enfield #4 mk 1 or 2.
but for all out speed of sight alignment, i think the express sight is hard to beat

Peep
I prefer a U notch and square front post to a V notch if it must be a fully open sight.

Peep sights are better by far. I really can't stand v-notch rear sights.

What do you guys feel is the "effective" visual range for peep sights? I max out at 400 yards...

Twoblink, ask Steve Smith or some of our other High Power shooters. They go out to 1000 yards with peeps. :)

I shoot equally well with each, mainly because I've shot tens of thousands of rounds with the open rear sight. I prefer the aperture sight because it is much quicker for me and is very easy for me to shoot when my eyes are watering from the wind being in my eyes compared to an open sight.

My friend started competition long range shooting with iron sights..
he said the "kiddie" stuff started at 500yards.. hehehe crazy!
So yeah, I know some of them get out to 1000 yards...

Yeah, I know a couple of guys that shoot that 1000 yard open sight stuff. I think they are also into voodoo, devil worship and sacrificing virgins. Nobody is supposed to be able to shoot like that.
I max out inside of 200 yards.

I'll have to go with the general consensus here... if it's a close cover gun, walking through brush etc... I'll take the speed of the peep sight. If I'm wanting more precise shooting beyond 50 yards, probably the notch. A friend of mine has an old Remington in 222 and the rear sight is a very narrow notch and the front sight is like a diamond so it comes to a very definable point. He can do some pretty good shooting with that rifle.

I think 1,000 yard open sight shooting is a very Zen activity. Closest thing I've done to that is shooting at 125 yards with my Dan Wesson 22 revolver. You're not so much 'aiming' per se as doing exactly what you do at 1/4th that distance but at a longer distance. I mean, if you know how to get on target at 25 yards (or 250 yards with the rifle) you do the exact same thing, very carefully and you just envision the bullet going home. Don't laugh, I'm completely serious!
I speak first hand about the handgun shooting, notsomuch about the rifle at 1,000 yards.

Do not try and send the bullet home. That's impossible. Instead...only try to realize the truth.
What truth?
There is no bullet.
There is no bullet?
Then you'll see, that it is not the bullet that goes home, it is only yourself.

be one with the bullet
be one with the target
when all is one
there is no bullet
there is no target
they will each find themselves
you will not hit, but
you will not miss

Most certainly the peep. I like the A2 AR15 sights. Two peeps for two distances. Old eyes much prefer a peep.

My 400 yard with peeps on my M1A National Match. I can get 7 out of 10 on paper (mind you that's a 20x24" big sheet)
500 yards. I get 3 out of 10, and not even consistantly.. Past that.. eyesight failure..
But I have friend that can do it, so it's possible...
Please, if you have extra virgins lying around... put them to good use, don't sacrifice them!

Please, if you have extra virgins lying around... put them to good use, don't sacrifice them! My thoughts exactly. Why not limit yourself to sacrificing a chicken or two? It may not be quite as effective for 1000 yard shooting, but out to 800 or so the difference should be negligible.
If done in public, sacrificing a chicken will also have the additional bonus of annoying the Peta-philes. :D
Oh, and I shoot better with peep sights than with open ones. :)

I was taught rifle shooting with a G3.
Now I have an Enfield No.4 and an SL8 with G3-style open sights.
Looks like I prefer aperture, diopter or peep sights. :)
