Pushing the limits of decency on a Ruger 22/45

I just finished this up after a month and a half of evening tinkering in the shop.
If it wasn't so darned nice to shoot, I wouldn't have even messed with it.

That was the first group I tried to shoot with it. I could feel when I pulled the trigger wrong 3 of 10 times and got the flyers. I'm not a Bullseye shooter with handguns so the little rimfire here will hopefully help me to improve my skills beyond the "sight, acqire, fire" of fast competition shooting.
Total weight with optics and a loaded magazine is 32.06 ounces.
I just had to show it off.

That looks very cool - but hey - is that not a MkII or III - seeing as 22/45 has polymer frame!!!!!

Looks like he just colored the frame. It still has the 22/45 look, triggerguard, etc.

I didn't look close enough Walt at the pic - a further look makes it less of an enigma!! I am not sure tho quite how one would best color over the polymer and finish up with a durable finish. be interested to know what was done to achieve that.

Recondoc - sorry if I ''misdiagnosed'' :) Knee-jerk! :p

P95Carry,

I remember when you were still debating which rings for that 22/45. Now, it's soooo Han SoLow with that compensator. Gotta get me one! :D

Nicely done 22/45, recondoc! That group offhand? What distance? And how did you get the Hogue grips on the pistol? Did you have to drill holes in the frame?

And the winner is?????? WALT!

The frame was milled out to accept Officer's Model Hogues (or any other Officer's sized grip.), screw studs were set and the ugly milling marks were filled in with Marine Grade Epoxy resin. After that came the recontouring of the trigger guard with a high grip cut. I used Lauer Custom Weaponry's Duracoat inBrushed Stainless finish with Matt finish clear from Lauer for added durability. Intenals were worked and polished for a trigger of 2.4#. Volquartsen trigger reduces the felt trigger pull that much more. The barrel is a drop on unit from Tactical Solutions and is worth every penny I saved to buy it. This thing is milled aircraft grade 6061 with a stainless match liner.
Feed and function were without a hitch with three different loads. (CCI Mini-Mag, CCI Green Tag, Federal Champion.) Point of aim was raised about an inch with the Mini-Mags but stayed center. Best group was with the Fed. Champion. Cycling was smooth and fast. In rapid fire (not the disciplined style but just outright cutting loose with 10 fast rounds) I was able to keep it on the little shoot and see at 15 yards. (The affor mentioned activity serves no real purpose in the rifire shooting world other than lots of fun and the outside chance that I may have to use a .22 for defense against a person. If that were the case, I would have put 10 in the kill box so that makes me feel a little bit comfy.) The group shot in the photo is at 25 yards.
Overall this was a fun, month long project that I probably won't repeat because of the hours and hours of extensive hand sanding work on the frame.
Next one will be a MK II stainless frame.

Here's a bit of a step by step photo series on putting this one together.
http://www.gunpix.com/gallery/Handguns/Custom_Guns/22-45%20project%201.JPG
Removed the molded in grips by milling them out. Removed the EuroHook from the trigger guard.

Frame filled in with Marine Grade Epoxy resign. Really strong but flexible enough not to crack under repeated recoil.

Grip frame drilled for 1911 style bushings and base coat of DuraCoat shot. I was originally going to go with Desert Tan but decided to do something less military looking for a change.

Grips fitted just to see how it's going to look.

Assembled and waiting for the top end. It was during this time that I decided to go with the Brushed Stainless color of DuraCoat instead.

Completed pistol just before going to the range.

Another view.
Lot's of frustration and fun doing this one.

Hmmm, not a bad group for 7 yards. What'll it do at, say, 50 feet? :D :neener: :neener: :D

(Grinning, ducking, and running.)

Just shows - I should not jump to hasty conclusions!!

Great job - extremely interesting project and nicely done. Certainly - you have finished up with a very unique looker and - sure don't shoot bad either.

Thanks for all the pics and info. :)

How can I ever look at and handle my stock ugly 22/45. You did a fine job. Very nice. Can I have one?

OH25,
Just follow my easy step by step instructions listed above. How hard can it be? :D
