Illegal guns in photo shoot
By Steve Butcher
May 9, 2005

When the Victoria Police special operations group raided the Hastings clubhouse of the Outlaws Motorcycle Club, they found an arsenal of illegal weapons, including a sawn-off shotgun, two .45-calibre automatic handguns and multiple rounds of unsecured ammunition.

Present in the clubhouse in the 5.30am raid were then club president Brendan Wayne Petersen and his girlfriend.

What ensured that Petersen and other club members had seriously shot themselves in the foot was a series of incriminating photographs of them brandishing weapons, including a heavily armed group pictured for the Outlaws Christmas card mail-out.

One showed Petersen and colleague Shane Jolly pointing automatic handguns at each other's heads.

When Petersen appeared in court on Friday to face assault and firearms charges, his barrister James Montgomery argued that the digital photographs showed boys being silly in the clubhouse.

Magistrate Duncan Reynolds, who heard how Peterson injured four men in unprovoked attacks between August 2002, and September 2003, jailed him for 18 months.

Mr Reynolds, who ordered Petersen to serve a minimum of six months, described the assaults as cowardly and Petersen's attitude to firearms laws as cavalier.

Petersen, of Kareela Drive, Tootgarook, was released pending an appeal.

Jack Vandersteen, prosecuting, said Petersen assaulted a man in a Baxter tavern and others punched and kicked him, while in another attack in Tyabb he assaulted a pedestrian who gestured at a car he was travelling in.

On August 1, 2003, Petersen and others assaulted a naval petty officer in Somerville and later he and fellow Outlaws surrounded a man in the Rosebud Hotel and punched and kicked him to the ground.

Mr Vandersteen said all of the firearms, including the two loaded .45-calibre handguns that were found under Petersen's bed, were unregistered.

Mr Montgomery said Petersen, who pleaded guilty to four charges of intentionally causing injury and four firearms offences, had never been seen with the weapons outside the clubhouse.

"Mr Vandersteen said all of the firearms, including the two loaded .45-calibre handguns that were found under Petersen's bed, were unregistered."

Thugs with unregistered guns. Imagine that. Of course, I don't think *anyone* should have to register a gun.

Further proof: If you outlaw guns, only outlaws will have guns.

The entire thing is a fabrication.

Know why?

Because handguns are illegal in Australia.

As an Australian, all I can say is that thankfully we don't have an Australian version of Jerry Springer here. We do unfortunately have plenty of coverage of Jerry Springer on Aus. T.V.
If we did have an Australian Jerry Springer, the two 'bikies' pictured would be prime candidates for such a television program.

As an aside, its effectively a case of preaching to the choir, but notice that an arsenal now consists of two handguns, one shotgun and 'multiple' rounds.

Hey, people are just that friendly down in Oz. You know for all the strict gun control in Australia, that didn't keep the cops in Hobart from taking some of the Marines from the John C. Stennis (CVN-74) out to jeep-hunt the wildlife.

Shame about that Gun Control, too. WA and Tasmania would be awesome places to live.

Actually that arsenal was two handguns, a shotgun, and "multiple rounds of unsecured ammunition."

Ummmm....... Just how secure does your ammo have to be, anyway?

Generally locked in a safe/container of some kind and seperated from firearms.

and by the way, handguns aren't illegal here.

Under Australia's uniform gun laws:
Anyone who applies for a gun licence in any state must prove a genuine reason (self-defence doesn't qualify),

Anyone wanting to buy a gun must prove genuine reason for that particular gun,

All sales must go through dealers

All gun sales, gifts and inheritances must be registered with police

No self-loading longarms can be bought for target shooting or recreational hunting.

So in that same sense, machine guns aren't illegal in the US. They aren't illegal IF you get local LEO approval and a BATF stamp for a Class III firearm. Otherwise THEY ARE ALL ILLEGAL! Handguns are all illegal in Australia, with the ONLY exceptions being for LEO's and other ruling class members, and anyone who can convinced the powers that be that they really need a firearm. And self defense is not sufficient justification. What a great government you have down there. Too bad the biker gangs don't kill the politicians.

OK! For the record .Hand guns are legal in australia . Min barrel lenght Semi auto 5", Revolver 4". For normal shooting events. Max cal of 357. This varies To alowing up to .45cal for sass and metalic sil.The only people who may use a hand gun in anyother place than a pistol Club/Range are Farmers .Mag cap of Semi autos is 10!

Here in Auz we have suffered Two firearms "buy Backs" the first being the Ban on Semi auto Rifles/shotguns& Pumpaction shotguns!(as A pro shooter none of this effected me) Yet Members of clay target clubs ,Farmers & some Pro shooters are still allowed to own these "Prohibited Weapons"(I prefer tool of my trade) .The second was the Hand Gun buyback.I still own two super Black hawkes in .44mag ,I still go to the Range & shoot !

Biker-Gangs ????? Well don't the Anti gun Media love a story like that?
Yep make the Average overseas citizen think that we're all a mob of 'dills'(idiots)
The truth of the matter is when there's a shooting here in Auz it go's front page for day's.And yes the Media lap up any thing to do with "The Outlawed Bikie Gangs"(This term amazes me"Outlawed" dose that not mean unlawful ,erm not Legaly permited? :scrutiny:  )

Look what it boils down to is that a couple of dickheads tried to be big he men with hot guns. They got caught! Good Job ! so why bother splashing it all over the world ? At the end of the day who cares? apart from the Anti gun lobby?

Hey at the end of the day I happen to like Living in Auz & I choose not to live near any major cities! This is not cause I fear for my life Or that I feel that I have to carry a gun for my own protection (If I lived in a situation that I had to I would willingly do so & God help anybody that took that right from me)It is the Idiots who live in the cities that I dislike I prefer to be working on the edge of the desert or the Nullubour Plain than have to put up with the crap of the cities!
Sorry for being so long winded It's just I like to put things straight once in a while :cuss:

Deciple, we realize you are one of us gun nuts, but the laws you cite are absolutely abhorrent to American shooters. It's not even as bad as you describe in California, which is the proving ground for absurd American gun laws. (They have to be proven not to work here first before they can be enacted in New York and Massachusetts.) To us, for all practical purposes handguns are banned in Australia.

I see where your comming from Tim ! WESTERN AUSTRALIA has the most .Horrifing Restrictions in Australia .There are 2 clsification of rifle .(a) low power which covers Mv of upto 1750fps &(B ) high power .To obtain a low power licence The shooter must have ,a letter from a property owner to shoot on his property.High power is 3 letters ,as in the above .A shooter may get a Range only permit for either .But it comes down to the mood of the issuing constable wether the shooter gets his/her permit ! Many years ago I took on a contract shooting Dingos & Camals with the Wa Gov .On crosssing the border I was almost aressted for having in my possetion severil "High Powered " Weapons .It took several phone calls to various Gov departments to clear the matter up ! With a Final warnning from the Police involved that I would be under close scuteny for the time I was their side of the Border !
I thanked them for their concern & made their lives a thougher Misery for the time I was there ! By contacting them by Radio several times a day to let them Know my exact location so in the event they needed me they knew where to find me !

Is it true that Budweiser is considered a fancy import beer Down Under?

30 cal . I was never a drinker who frequented the (I LOV THIS NAME) Beer boutquites in Auz . As they tended to frown on us Boys from the bush ! So I made a phone call to my Yuppie son (gets it from his mother's side of the family :cuss: :banghead: ) He tells me that it is a popular beer as anything from the US is considered the Ant's pants down here ! But from what I've gathered Fosters is considered a fancy import beer in other countries .Yet it would be hard to find anybody in their right mind who would drink the Swill down here :barf:

Haha, it seems that attitude towards domestic beers is the same everywhere.

Budweiser sucks, so does Foster's but we get it in giant cans here which is kind of an interesting novelty..

I like Fosters b/c it comes in a big can. :neener:

Anyhoo, will Aussie gun owners ever be in a position to push back on current restrictions? Your rules sound extremely restrictive to most of us Yank gun owners, even ones who live in states-cum-socialist-republics.

I know I'm going to cop more flack ,than a F18 over Bagdad ,from my fellow Aussies here .But the Problem we have is that we're all very complasant people down here until something happens then the hive really gets stirred up . After Pt Aurther .The Priminister said Ok No more semi auto rifles /shot guns !!!!!!!!!!! Yes there were Public protests & yes there was open outrage ! Then there was an Election & the Party who had ,dis armed the average Voter got back into power ! :fire: :cuss: .Of course all the shooters were slightly pissed about this .In fact they wrote to all of the shooting Magizines & vented their opinons to other Shooters .only a small minority (such as myself & a lot of other Pro shooters .whom it is to be remembered that the New restrictions have had no effect on us what so ever ! wrote /rang our MPs wanting to know what the hell was going on & vented our displeasure) The media In Auz is totaly Anti firearms .Most of our localy produced Tv is Anti firearms & will not hesitate to "Bash" a Firearms Issue .We have the SSAA a smaller verstion of your NRA but with nowhere near the power over the Gov that you as Shooters have . :banghead:
