View Full Version : what do (hand)gun owners want?

May 10, 2005, 05:54 AM
I write about guns and maintain a website about guns. My bias
is pro-gun with as little political rhetoric as possible. Yes, I know,
writing about guns is an overtly political act.

The other day, someone asked me this question, "what do gun
owners want?" in the context of trying to identify potential
interests of informing and serving handgun users. Of course,
I have opinions in this regard.

But it occurred to me that this forum is a good place to ask
such a question. So, if you will respond with 4-5 things that
you, as a gun owner, REALLY want, I would be appreciative.

It may not be possible for you to list only 4-5 items and you
may want to post more. Do so, please. But put what you want
most at the top of the list.

Anyone?

For CA to give us mere civilians 10+ round magazines.
Variety.
Low prices.
For CA to stop with the silly drop tests - ties in with the 2nd.

Here's what I want:
1. Stopping power
2. Beautiful ergonomics
3. Simplicity in design & function
4. High ammunition capacity for semi-autos
5. Easy to clean and care for

1. NFA to go away.
2. GCA to go away.
3. Sporting clauses to go away.
4. Import bans to go away.
5. Eliminating the 10% tax on handguns (as well as the 11% tax on long guns and ammo.)

That'd make me happy as a handgun owner.

If you meant what features of handguns make me happy, here's that list too.

1. A bang when I pull the trigger. (This is rather important to me.)
2. Comfy. (Enough said.)
3. Decently priced magazines. (I prefer a dozen mags per weapon.)
4. Holds up to abuse. (I want more bangs when I pull the trigger)
5. Decent price for the level of quality I'm buying.

1. I want the Gun Fearing Wussies to stop fearing my guns, and recognize that THEY are protected from home invasions, etc. by virtue of handgun ownership by myself and others.

2. I want the Socialists to go away forever. Gun control works only for totalitarian societies (and only if you are the one with the gun).

3. I want the true story from the Socialist Mainstream Media :banghead: Not their selective reporting of negative gun use. What about the millions of crimes (or at least hundreds of thousands) that are stopped by the presence or the use of a gun?

4. I want to purchase a handgun without answering an insanely stupid questionnaire at my County Sheriff's office, with questions which add up to "are you a criminally insane sociopath who will go on a bloody rampage if you get a gun?" Of course someone will always answer "yes" to such questions

5. I want lots of ammo, lots of mags, lots of guns in two calibers (to keep the ammo straight).

I want a 5" 1911 with officer's frame.
I want a BHP in 10mm

I want money to shoot them both.
I want knowledge/money enough to reload

1. The immediate repeal of every gun law on the books.
2. A sammich.
3. A tall, cold glass of iced tea.

I want a handgun, to start with. Realising that licenses are here to stay, I want the license to be for life. No restrictions on number of guns eiter. Something thats cheap to feed, goes "boom" every time I pull the trigger, and with a decent magasine capacity. Shall Issue CCW would be nice too, but that is probably just wishful thinking :(

1. I want to know why a handgun, with fewer parts and less material, costs twice as much as a quality shotgun or rifle.

2. I want the likes of Schumer, Feinstein, and Clinton to leave me the hell alone.

3. I want a quality leather holster for a reasonable price and not have to wait 4 months to get it.

4. I want to know how a plastic framed Glock holds up like it does. Goes against reason.

5. I want all internal locks taken off guns, especially Smiths.

6. I want Ruger to stop putting safety billboards on their guns.

7. Keep your damned Swartz firing pin safety systems (Colt, Kimber, et al). If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Other than the obvious; reliable and accurate.

1. A good crisp trigger, 4-5 lb no over-travel.
2. ergonomic, points well.
3. sights that are easy to pick up and also able to use them for precise shooting.
4. good fit and finish
5. Made in U.S.A.

I would like all of this out of the box. In my book Springfield, S&W and Kimber have hit the nail on the head. Now if someone could do all of the above without making yet another brand of 1911. BTW, quality revolvers fit the bill too.

I want a handgun the size and weight of the Rohrbaugh, with the ballistics of the .500 S&W Magnum, that holds a minimum of a 100 rounds, has the recoil of a .22lr, and is utterly reliable.

That's not too much to ask for is it.

Brian Williams

1. no extra safetys, "for the children", like the frame lock on the S&Ws
2. variety, if I want a revolver with a 3 and 3/8" barrel, let me order one, with CNC machineing it is easily done.
3. remove NFA and the rest fall like a house of cards.

Top Five Political:

1. I want GCA '68 repealed.
2. I want NFA '34 repealed.
3. I want state/local laws restricting & regulating firearms pre-empted.
4. I want all 50 states to have concealed carry legislation like Vermont and Alaska.
5. I want anti-gun politicians like Illinois Gov. Blagovitch (sp?) Chuck Schumer, Frank Lautenberg, Lincoln Chaffe, and those two batty women from California to be "de-elected."

Top Five Mechanical:

1. I'd like S&W revolvers with no lock, no MIM parts, pinned & recessed. Specifically, a blue M27 as above with a 5" full lugged barrel, Patridge front sight and checkered top strap.

2. I'd like a BHP with factory enhancements, including a scandium frame, checkered front strap, Novak sights, and no magazine disconnect.

3. I'd like a good, affordable, (<$2500) double-barrel express rifle in a serious caliber like .470 NE . . . ideally .475 No. 2.

4. I'd like Winchester to make a standard (not overpriced custom shop) Model 70 rifle in .458 Lott with proper express sights, a properly reinforced & proportioned stock, and a drop-box magazine holding a full 5 rounds.

5. I'd like a hunting riflescope with an integral laser rangefinder which will automatically adjust the reticle for the range of your game.

Reliability and durability should be priority #1. Glocks sell well because they consistently go bang.

My personal wishlist:
922(o) should go away
GCA 1968 should go away
HK should sell their goodies to US citizens
schumer, feinstein, brady, lautenberg, pelosi, daley, barama, boxer, mccarthy, and soros should drop dead

1. Repeal of the GCA of '68.
2. Repeal of the '34 NFA.
3. Open Carry in Oklahoma.
4. The demise of organizations like the Brady Bunch.
5. Politicians that are forbidden to lie on penalty of death.

Guns - got all the ones I want and they all work pretty much the way I expect them to work. I'd kind'a like to have a .50 made by Barrett but don't have any place to shoot one so... a Desert Eagle in .50 would be cool too but would be a novelty gun only. Other than that - I'm pretty happy.

Pretty much what others have said ...

1) Just to be left alone

2) the right to keep and bear arms in reality not being infringed - including concealed carry with no permit

3) repeal GCA 1968 --> be able to order guns through the mail again (I hate going to town :( )

I would like to see the "old time, high quality" guns come back too. Those Golden Age Colt's, Smith & Wesson's, Winchester's, Remington's, etc. really turn me on. But you know something? I'm enough of a realist to understand that in today's manufacturing economy I couldn't afford to buy one if they were made. I suspect that if Smith & Wesson really, truly duplicated the Registered .357 Magnum as it was made in 1935 (suggested retail cost about $125.00 back then) it would be priced somewhere around $2,500 to $3,000 today.

Sometimes folks have to face the facts of life ...

On the other hand if you buy a popular 1911-style .45 pistol for $500.00 upwards, I think the buyer has a right to expect it will at least feed ball ammunition reliably as it comes out of the box.

I'd be happy with a repeal of the so-called "sporting uses" clause enforced on foreign imported handguns.

Repeal the import bans on Chinese and Russian made handguns.

I would also like to see sound suppressors moved from being NFA items to being regulated no more heavily than a run of the mill handgun or rifle.

I just want people to stop fearing law abiding gun owners who have never hurt anyone and attacking them with silly gun control laws.

I want them to understand that a world with guns really is a safer world than one without guns (but with a lot of other weapons).

1. I want cheaper factory ammo.
2. I want politicians to stay out of my business
3. I want strict enforcement of the stupid laws already forced down our throats without enacting new ones "for the children".
4. I want to be treated as an enthusiast, not a money carrier for the used car/gun dealer to fleese. Talk to me about my hobby, dont talk at me like I was an inconvenience. Its my interest that keeps the dealer in business not the other way around.
5. I want the world to treat us as we are. Individuals that beleive in Constitutional rights. That are good citizens of a morally comprimised society. That use our hobby as a release from the everyday grind. That are for the most part, fine, upstanding, considerate and good people
6. Did I say cheaper factory ammo?

I want people with gun phobias to leave gun enthusiasts the h*** alone! Spiders give me the creeps, but I don't go around telling other people they shouldn't be able to have a pet tarantula if that's what they want. An even better example is my Dad's fear of heights. Because of Dad's phobia, he can't even watch a show about rock climbing or mountaineering on TV. And unlike guns, rock climbing and mountaineering are dangerous by their very nature. Yet Dad would never tell anyone else they shouldn't be allowed to climb.

Second, I like to see more pistols chambered for the 10mm. More 1911s in 10mm would be my first choice, but I'd settle for a Browning HP.

#1 End to import bans. If it can be sold here legally, it should be importable

#2 Cheap range

#3 Someone in Russia to dig up the old 7.62 Nagant cartridge equipment and start making that caliber cheaply.

#4 Safety equipment, such as gun safes, to be either tax free or low-tax. It's for the children.

#5 For the state of MN to correct the craniorectal inversion that denies me CC permit

The right as a human being and a responsible citizen of the United States of America to be able to defend myself (national CCW). Without fear of reprisal (such as civil money oriented lawsuits) if upon simple investigation it is ruled self-defense.

A media that can be held legally reponsible for their content. Legally includes criminal charges should their content not contain unbiased facts. The media should not be allowed (legally) to be a powerful multi-media force of the left wing used to SHAPE opinion. Reporting should be factual, unbiased, and accurate. Failure to do so should result in criminal charges with a penalty that includes prison terms.

As noted by others, at least temporarily remove that blind fold of double standards. The politicians and so called "shakers and movers" (which includes most of the media as well) have lived in a enviroment of privelage. They are have no idea in most cases of what life is like for many people in the United States. No idea whatsover. Perhaps, in this spirit, make it a legal requirement that anyone seeking a political office at the Federal level (including Judges) to have served at least 1 term in the United States Armed Forces.

Better taining for police officers at all levels. It has been my experience that this lack of professional training has resulted in an enviroment where many police oficers do not know where their legal authority begins and where it ends. This is not a police state.
