or do they have to buy one that's been traded in by a cop?

Yep, as long as you're over 18 and are otherwise legally eligible.
I'd say at least as many are sold directly to civilians as are sold to departments.

you can buy a Remington 870 Police, but only from a distributor that can get them. Remington is picky about who they sell them to, prefering that only police get the "police" models. However lots of stores and distributors get them all the time. And their IS a difference between the police and express models.....

Forgot that you must comply with the OAL restrictions and the minimum 18" barrel requirement. Otherwise it's not too difficult.

It isn't that Remington is "picky" about who they sell them to, it's HOW Remington handles distribution.
Remington has a network of distributors who sell Remington commercial guns, and a network of distributors who stock Law Enforcement guns.
Most Remington distributors aren't BOTH, so it can be a pain for a local Dealer to find a Remington LE Distributor.
If you want a Remington Police gun, just find a Dealer who is willing to make a special order for you.

The last time I checked, Vangcomp had 870P's built and ready to ship and they include the Vang barrel---ported or unported.

Here is how I got mine. Went to the Remington LE site and hit support, Wholesaler Directory (http://www.remingtonle.com/support/states/nevada.htm#nevada), clicked on NV, emailed them and the reply was:
Thank you for your inquiry. You can locate a dealer near you @
www.galleryofguns/ (www.galleryofguns.com). The dealers will be able to quote you prices.
Thank you.
A zip code listed dealers around town and I called one I had not checked before and he ordered me one right there on the line. Went in to pay and found out he got the 870P from the same AZ Rem. LE wholesaler listed.
Kind of a round about way. A better kiss method would be to just call around. :neener:

I just did. I ordered it (a Rem 4897 I think, 20", IC, bead sight) from my local police supply store. It was $389. They had no problem selling to a non-officer. I obviously did not get the department discount . Good luck! :(

A recent flyer from Davidson's listed several models of the 870P- your FFL dealer can order from them. Prices were pretty good by comparison too...

"Police are civilians"
Thank you, but I think we're outnumbered by the rising tide of incorrect usage when referring to the civil police. They aren't subject to military law and that makes them civilians. Oh well. Have a safe and happy fourth.

CDNN has the FN Tactical Police 7+1 shot for $599 and the FN Police 8 shot for $269. Both are available through your local FFL. I got the cheaper model recently and found it satisfactory. It's my HD shotgun now. There are probably better shotguns on the market but if you gotta have a police model, these spell it out on the barrel. P-O-L-I-C-E.
