I wish Remington hadn't discontinued it. Every one I owned was very accurate without any mods.
With custom barrel etc., they got even better. :uhoh: :D

I have a 788 in 22-250 that I bought new around 1979......
Just as accurate as my heavy barreled 700s.
I also remember seeing a 788 in the 44mag once. Bet those are hard to come by.
Also.....a friend has one of the early 788s that has a walnut stock on it. I suppose remington put walnut stocks..at first...on them.

I have a 788 now that was a .222 when I got it, I then had it rebarreled to .223, with 1:9, 26" varmint weight barrel.
It has a beautiful walnut stock. In fact, it's almost presentation grade.
They must have run out of production stocks near the end of a run of 788's, and grabbed whatever wood was handy to finish up. :uhoh:

One of the rifles I have alway's regreted selling was a L/H 788 in 6mm :banghead:
God that was one acurate rifle ! I used it for ROO shooting ,when everybody in the Industry were going mad on 243s (I liked to be differant ) It was also used on donkeys & for a time on camels (whilst waiting for a new barrel, for my .303) Prob was the 6mm never got the publisity it deserved in this country ! Was the same with the 788 it was branded as only a budjet rifle, and not a alturnitive to the 700s on the market. But I think it was a sad day ,when rem did away with the 788& the 600 series Actions ! :cuss: :fire:

I fell into a 44mag at the local shop. Love the gun. Doesn’t make it in the woods much but gets out every now and then. Surprisingly accurate. Dose anyone have any info on the gun like # made or SN range. This page will give the year but doesn’t break down by caliber. My 788 .44mag ith it's 3x Weaver post scope is used as a VERY quiet dispatcher of errant deer in my apple orchard . I either use .44 spec hornady 180 grain XTP loads or my own 320 grain cast wide flat points with power pistol to give about 800 fps - and low noise! It is the most accurate .44 I own and can print 1" 50 yard groups all day with alot of loads! The top end loads with 300 grain bullets are in the 1800fps range (I only shot a few of them , recoil is MUCH too harsh !.) :) The early 788s like mine had plain, but nice walnut stocks! :)

One of the first rifles I ever bought was a Remington 788 in .223 when I was about 21 years old. It was super accurate. I had the cheap Tasco scope on it, but it really performed. I once fired 10 rounds of Black Hills ammo loaded with a Hornady 55 grain SX bullet into 1/4" at 100 yards. And, I did it in dramatic fashion: I shot the group on an ace of spades playing card. I made the mistake of showing it to my local gun dealer. He badgered me for a year about selling him the rifle every time I went in there. Finally, I gave in and traded it for something.
A couple years ago, I finally came across another one. It shoots good too.

I've got a 788 in 22-250 with a walnut stock. Bought it in 1967. It's built like a tank and is very accurate. It's one of the few rifles that I will never part with. Well I guess I will never part with any of my rifles, but the 788 has more sentimental value attached to it.
Remington obviously made a huge mistake when they came out with the 788 line. They wanted an inexpensive rifle for the hoi polloi, but what they ended up with was a real sleeper that usually shoots better than some of their higher grade rifles.

I don't think I've ever heard anybody badmouth them as a first quality rifle. Many even think they are superior to the 700's coming out of the factory during the same era.
I've always coveted one in 7-08, too.
