Jewerly store shoot out- some suprising lessons in human endurance and weapons used

this months Combat Handguns magazine has an article by Massad Ayoob which is thought provoking to say the least. Two hardend thugs attacked a Jewelry store and got more than they bargained for. In the ensuing shootout the good guys took out both thugs. One of them was a moster of a man whose legs were actually double of the diamenter of the average Joe. This is the man who succumbed to the lowly .38 special snub nose revolver while his accomplice who was much smaller took numerous 38 special hits and several shotgun blasts at point blank range before expiring.
It seems as though caliber of weapon and size of man do not make the difference as to what will be the outcome of a shoot out. Perhaps it is the will to live or shall we say the lack of carring if you do live or not.

It's a mental thing. The only two true "one shot stops" where I knew the victor were performed with a .25 and a .38 LSWC. I've known several folks who have run dry with bgger bores and good shot placement. Good just wasn't good enough when the bell rang.

"One of them was a moster of a man whose legs were actually double of the diamenter of the average Joe. This is the man who succumbed to the lowly .38 special snub nose revolver..."
If I recall the article, he took six pretty rapid fire .38 Specials to the chest. That probably had something to do with it.

I just got the newest issue of American Handgunner (the May/June 2003 issue) and this months The Ayoob Files is about this shootout.
Its an interesting read.
and yes, the one guy took 6 rapid shots to the chest and side (3 shots each from two shooters at the same time) while standing on the desplay case then fell to the ground and was later shot in the back with a .44mag (although he was probably dead by then). The second guy eventualy falls to a shotgun blast to the head, but it sounded like a heck of a firefight.
The owner of the store and his brother had a dozen or so 5 shot Charter .38 specials arranged around the store, so they would just grab a gun ... 5 bangs, drop it and grab another :)

Good one.
Yep, did the same thing with various .38's around the shop, and some Ithica 37 's, when I worked for my dad. Took this Idea to other job locations too. Boxcutters for untying, keys for handcuffs...

Sounds like quality shot placement over number of hits.

As Chuck Taylor pointed out this weekend, note that a deer caught unexpectedly will drop immediately when hit, whereas a deer hit on the run in the SAME spot can run 300-400 meters before falling.
The difference? Adrenaline.
Maybe the little guy was just AMPED and the big guy was caught more unaware.
Just another perspective.

Did he say where this happened? We had a similar thing happen here 7 years ago. Very similar.

It took place in Richmond, VA. I was in the LFI-II class that this gentleman spoke at, and from which Ayoob based the article. (Ayoob is not only an excellent shooter, he types like a demon. He was transcribing this thing blind, watching the guy as he typed.)

Thought that sounded familiar. I remember when that happened. Quite the talk for a while. Lots in the community seemed to "cheer" for the store owners and felt that robbers would think twice about robbing, especially that store :D !
And having the guns strategically placed around the store, and a staff that knew how to use them, wow! They must have been Boy Scouts ("Be Prepared")!!!!!!!!!

Thought it sounded mighty familiar. It happened about ten minutes from here (if I hit the lights right.)
