The AR thread got me going, and now I need to see your AK. I want one very badly, but, alas, I live in California...for now. So, start posting pictures, and keep it going until someone cries uncle.

Hey Ringer, what kind of scope mount do you have there on your SAR-1 with the black furniture and what do you think of it?

I have an SAR-1 myself and I'm looking into mounting a red dot in pretty much the same manner you have yours set up. I would like some opinions/ideas on scope mounts from anyone interested in replying.

It's just a plain ole "made in Belarus" Russian side mount like this one at Centerfire Systems (http://www.centerfiresystems.com/miva/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=CSI&Product_Code=MNTAKA11). I believe there is a high and low mount style. The one on my SAR being the low mount and the one pictured below being the high mount but not positive about that. It works OK but it puts the red dot a bit high making cheek weld pretty much impossible. It also is slightly offset to the left, which I suppose could be remedied with a drill and tap to move the wearver mount over. Personally I would like to try an Ultimak (http://www.ultimak.com/pic16.htm) to get the sight lower but haven't coughed up the 100 bucks yet. Overall though this one is not too bad for the cost.

Beech? Maybe, I don't really know. The Classic series were a limited production run (mine is 161 out of I think 250) and the quality is really top notch.

Thanks for the info, Ringer. It looks like I found your mount on nightvisionweb.com (http://www.nightvisionweb.com/side_adapters.htm) as well. Being left-handed, that left-side offset might be a problem for me. How far off center would you say it is?

The Ultimak is defintely a low mount and I have that down as an option, too. The only thing that's got me thinking twice about it is that I'm not real crazy about the red dot being mounted that far forward. I'd also kind of like to have the option of mounting a regular magnifying scope on it.

Has anyone had any experience with K-VAR's scope mount (KV04S (http://www.k-var.com/product.asp?0=207&1=210&3=40))? It's pricey, but it looks like a decent mount.

I've also heard that the Kobra (http://www.nightvisionweb.com/kobra.htm) red dot is nice. Anyone have an opinion there?

Raygun,
The Ultimak with a forward mounted dot is the only way to go. A Scout type scope also works very well for that matter. The rifle shoulders and shoots the same as it does when using your iron sights and is very fast and natural. Snap shots are a breeze. The cheek weld is basically the same as the iron sights. With the right dot sight and mount/rings, you can co-witness your iron sights too, but even if the sight is a little high, with the right mount its gone instantly if you should ever have a problem. Everything is up front and out of the way of your field of view and handling. The rear mounted dots, like the Kobra or ones mounted on the side rail mounts like shown are way to high to shoot comfortably with and are also right in your face. They also have to be removed to clean the rifle. I have two AK's with the Ultimak mounted and would not hesitate to get another. This set up brings the AK into the 21st century and makes the AK's iron sight and accuracy issues a moot point.

The mount is not that far offset, maybe about 3/16 inch. The height is far more of a problem than the offset for me. That is the one on that website, VM-WL. If you are still considering that mount I can drag it out of the safe a little later and snap a picture from the butt end so you can see the offset.

AK103K makes some very good points and advice about the Ultimak. I think that is a far better way go and plan on ordering one myself at some point.

OK, these are not the greatest but I didn't have a lot of time. You can get a pretty good idea by looking the rail moreso than the red dot. Quick check with a ruler it appears to be more like an 1/8 of an inch. Hope this helps.

Oh yeah, these pictures also prove that cats, while nosey, aren't necessarily smart. Nothing like plopping yourself down and staring down the business end of an AK. I guess one could argue she recognizes no mag but how does she know there is not one in the chamber?

It does look like there's plenty of room to drill and tap the mount to center the Weaver rail over the bore. I wonder why they didn't just do that in production? Those crazy Belarussians. It is up there quite a bit, though.

I can't tell you right off hand, but I think they are about the same length, RPK stock might be a little longer. I'll take a measure of both when I get home from work and give you a post later this morning.

I hope you ordered a Norinco 75 round drum, they are much less condusive to sore thumbs ;)

after my stock change (RPK stock) I've decided the RPK stock is more useful even though it's shorter. The wood cuts away deeper allowing sights to easily line up with eyes. The shape seems to cradle perfectly when firing shouldered.

I ain't changing back either ;)
