Guys, I just bought a 586 and would like to put some nice wood grips on it. Here's the question, what size is the grip? I had heard somwhere a 586 had a k frame grip.

Thanks,
Mike

Same as a 686, medium L frame.

As noted K/L frame revolvers share the same grips, but you will also need to know whether it's a square or round butt. Every 586 I've ever seen has had the square butt grip, but I've heard tale of a few with the RB style (very unlikely yours is one of those).

I'll dig around and see if I can find to a link to picture of the difference you can see by taking the current grips off just so you can be sure.

PS

That didn't take long :)

Python, my problem is I have small hands so the grips that come on the pistol are a bit on the large size for me. I am going to try some classic pannel grips from handgungrips.com. I wonder how the fake Ivory grips would look?

Fake ivory grips? :barf:

I'm opposite and like the large S&W factory grips, and disklike the small Ruger factory grips.

I have a 4" 586-4 that was made in Nov. '94. It has S&W/Hogue Monogrips and is actually a round butt gun, eventhough, according to Supica, the square butt was dropped in 1995. I guess mine was one of the very first round butts they made. I like the look of wood better than rubber and recently changed my model 15-3 from rubber monogrips to wood service stocks. I have to admit, however, that the rubber is more comfortable for me to shoot. For that reason, I 'm going to leave the rubber on the 586.

Tom, I guess I better get some wood ones then shoot with both and keep what I like. Oh the search for the perfect grip.....
