Stock fit ????

Howdy all,

I've been reading up on the whole matter of fitting the stock to the shoulder. It seems I'm more confused now then before I started :what: I know this has been discussed at length but I'm still a bit foggy.

It seems there are two schools of thought:

* One says to seat the butt on the shoulder so that the top of the stock is level with the top of the shoulder.
(This is the method I use, but it does require me to bend my head down to plant my cheek and sight along the barrel)

* The other method seems to be to keep my head straight up, level the shotgun with my eye then push the stock into the shoulder.
(I've played with this but it leaves a good bit of the stock above my shoulder, when I pull it close the lower edge of the butt digs in hard, and I tend to believe it would hurt like H3LL to fire that way)

Is my stock simply not fitting well? Should it tuck in level with my head straight up and a clean line of sight? Am I missing something? Most importantly, what can I do?

Many thanks!
Brent...

There's a couple things here that need to be addressed, Brent. But I think you can come through this OK.

Don't drop your head to sight along the barrel. Do not sight, but look at the target. The barrel should just be there in your peripheral vision.

And don't level the shotgun with your eye, during the mount you should be intent on the target. Push it into your shoulder in the right place by feel.

Keeping the right elbow up helps form the cup the butt should go into.

Work with these for starters....
