Is it a shotgun shell? I remeber Herters making shotgun shells back in the 60's. I seem to remember a dark blue or purple hard plastic shell too.

In the 50's-60's, Herter's Inc operated a mail order business from Waseca, Minn. They were a fore-runner of Midway, Cabela's, and Gander Mountain. EVERY PRODUCT in the large, thick catalog was described as:

"Herter's Model Perfect" etc.

Really got tiresome seeing the same old line on every single product from tents to guns to bows to rods to boots to whatever you could think of. Their quality was usually in the Lee category. (Take that as you choose.)

Don't know what happened to them unless they finally ran out of Herter's Model Perfect Ink and Herter's Model Perfect Paper and Herter's Model Perfect Typewriters and Herter's Model Perfect Printers.

Good shooting and be safe.

ps: As I recall, they used a gimmick on their bullets: the Wasp Waist. The bullet's diameter was reduced in the middle section so that only the front and rear section of bullets supposedly touched the barrel. This was supposed to reduce friction and thus increase velocity. I don't know whether it reduced pressure or friction but it certainly caused seating problems. You HAD to seat the bullet so the full diameter section was at the case mouth to maintain proper alignment and crimping. As you may suspect, I did not have a high regard for their bullets and many of their other "products".

OT re bullets but - a better word for Herters - I have had an old Herters 3 x 9 scope for years - it is currently on my Marlin 60 and has and does serve well.

Those bullets tho - with a waist - sure sound a PITA!

P95Carry,
AFAIK, Herter's subcontracted nearly everything in their catalog. Prices were low and quality seemed to vary from decent to poor depending on the subcontractor chosen for a specific product. Some of Herter's bows were decent quality (Lee level).

Good shooting and be safe.
