Doesn't seem to work for me, clicking on it take me nowhere near the last post I read.

That function relies entirely on cookies. When you read a thread, a certain cookie is modified to include that threadid and the time at which you viewed it. Then, when you use the "first unread post" button(s), vbulletin looks at that cookie, looks for the threadid, gets the timestamp from it, and goes to the first post made after that timestamp.

I'm very hesitant to blame anything but your browser.
