Which .22lr?

Heading out to a show in a couple of weeks and thought I might keep an eye open for a .22lr to use for some target shooting (non-competitive) at the range since it's so inexpensive to shoot.

If you wanted to pick up a gun of reasonable quality for a fair price in this caliber, what would your choice and how much would you be willing to pay for it?

paid $350 for this, new, at a gun show (not including the red dot or mounts):

I think the 22/45's can be had in the $200 range...

I've been totally satisfied w/ my Ruger Comp Target. All it has needed has been ammo and a lot of extra mags!

I really have an affinity for the Browning BuckMark Camper. It has a nice crisp trigger, heavy barrel, and is extremely accurate. I got mine on sale a few years ago for $180, but I think the normal price on these in my neck of the woods is $200.

The only issue that I know of, and you will hear this from many BuckMark Owners is that the rearsite rail has a tendency to have the 2 hex screws come loose after extended firing. This is easiy fixed with a smidgeon of LockTite.

My favorite auto pistol is the 1911, and the controls of the Buckmark are like the 1911, which allows me to practice with the same way with this as I do my defensive pistol, which is a great bonus.

Ruger Mk II or 22/45 are the way to go. Which model depends on how much you want to spend.

Guns are inexpensive, accurate, reliable, durable and have a wide variety of drop in aftermarket parts available if you get the the itch to modify them. Finally, in the unlikely event something does go wrong, Ruger's service is absolutely top notch.

I don't claim to be an expert on .22s. My first .22 was bought a few months ago, and I picked the Beretta Neos. Frankly, I bought it because from what I read I thought it was a modern design and would be easy to shoot and, important to me, easy to clean and maintain. So far, 1500 rounds later, I like my choice. That doesn't mean I might not buy a Ruger (probably a 22/45, since I have a couple of 1911s) down the road.

How do you guys with the Neos get used to that trigger?

I vote for the Ruger. They seem more durable than the Browning and built stronger, maybe too strong. I have two of them and they are super accurate but my brother's Browning Camper if more fun to shoot off hand and has a better trigger. If you want a plinker get the Browning or a thin bbl Ruger. If you want to use it in competition someday, I think Ruger is the way to go. Rugers have so many after market parts, you can customize them yourself with over the counter drop in replacement parts. Cool.

I have both a Ruger 22/45 bull barrell and a Smith and Wesson 22A bull barrell and I have to admit the Smith and Wesson has been more reliable than the Ruger. The Smith is also dead accurate.

Just my 2 cents

Maybe far fetched; or out in left field, but I would
pay about $450.00 for a LNIB 3rd generation Colt
Match Target Woodsman.:uhoh:

But for all practical purpose's, I picked up a NIB
Ruger MK-II KMK-512 for $279.88; back in Oct. of
1998. Save the extra $$$, and buy lot's of ammo!

I'd be delighted to pay that for such a pistol! The last one I saw was considerably more expensive than that, and nowhere like new in box. What do you know that I don't?

Browning Buck Mark. I have the Standard 5 1/2" slabside barrel. Great feel, great trigger, and great sights equal great accuracy. Easy to disassemble for cleaning.

It's true that the hex screws can come loose during extended firing. I spend an extra 30 seconds during cleaning to add the Loctite. I use Tetra Gun Grease to lightly lube the slide and CCI Velocitor JHP's at the range. No stovepipes and no faliures to function of any type in more than 3000 rounds.

I'm not maligning the Rugers or any other .22. My Buck Mark has just been more satisfying.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not badmouthing the Ruger either.

I got a Ruger Mk-II KMK-678 ( which is kind of a long barrel, sometimes I wish I got the KMK-512) stainless steel a couple of years ago and got a aftermarket trigger for it. It is a great gun to shoot and on a great day I can get a 2 inch group at 25 yards.

For target and plinking there is nothing like the 22lr. You can shoot all day long under $20 bucks. Can't beat that.

Greeting's Standing Wolf My Friend-

I just used the $450.00 figure as a starting point;
I probably would go as high as $600.00 on one
unfired and NIB!

This weekend I shot a friends Neos. We took my trigger measure and it released at 8.5 lbs. Is this typical or do I need to just start working out my index finger at the gym? My 22A released at 2.8 and my Ruger 22/45 at 3.2.

Do I have to say it?

OK--get a MKII or 22/45.

Had a Buckmark--dumped that piece of trash---then stupidly bought a Buckmark rifle---thinking the bad pistol was a fluke----WRONG!!!-----took it out and shot it---dumped it the next day---JUNK.

I like my A-Bolts and BL-22------but the Buckmarks are just inferior garbage.
