Subject: [wa-guns] GOAL Action Alert

GOAL ACTION ALERT GOAL ACTION ALERT GOAL ACTION ALERT

Two events of importance to Washington's gun owners occurred in Olympia this week.

On Friday, the Senate Rules Committee passed SB 5910, shooing range protection, out of committee and made it eligible for a vote of the full Senate. SB 5910 protects shooting ranges from nuisance noise abatement lawsuits. This is the time to call or e-mail your Senator and ask them to support SB 5910. Some points worth making:
Ranges ensure public safety by:
Providing a safe, supervised place for Washington gun owners to shoot
Providing a venue for gun safety classes
Providing a venue for hunter education classes
Providing facilities, usually at no expense to the taxpayer, for
law enforcement officers to develop and maintain proficiency

A second, and equally critical issue, involves House Bill 1210, the
Antiterrorism Act of 2003. Most of HB 1210 focuses on enhanced
penalties for those who commit acts of terrorism, or who conspire to commit acts of terrorism. There is a problem with the bill with the definition of "weapons of mass destruction." HB 1210 includes in the definition, any device that may be used to cause multiple casualties.
Subject to interpretation, that includes firearms.

To ensure there is no doubt that the measure lumps firearms in with weapons of mass destruction (biological, chemical, radiological or nuclear devices), Democrat Rep. Jeannie Darneille and a dozen other gun grabbers have an amendment that specifically includes firearms. This is not only totally beyond the scope of HB 1210, it opens the door to using antiterrorism as an excuse to support every gun control bill that is offered in the future. This definition must be corrected. Rep. Jim Buck has offered a counter-amendment that adopts the conventional definition of weapons of mass destruction.

Please call, e-mail or snail-mail your representatives and ask them to:

OPPOSE THE DARNEILLE AMENDMENT, and

SUPPORT THE BUCK AMENDMENT.

BOTH BILLS WILL BE VOTED ON IN THE NEXT 72 HOURS. PLEASE CALL, E-MAIL, or SNAIL MAIL (quickly!) your SENATOR (on SB 5910) and REPRESENTATIVES (on HB 1210) and ask for their support.
