Summer Austin Texas Shoot?

May 25, 2005, 05:41 PM
Since the last scheduled shoot went south due to weather and people having last minute commitments, is anyone interested in trying to put together something in June?

What does everyone's schedule look like that second weekend in June (10th-12th)? Maybe we could hit Hill Country early one morning or late one evening?

That would be cool but I was booted last weekend from Hill Country for not agreeing with the King and his Court as Crazy Richard stated. It appears you can not fast fire while he is taking a Nap. :banghead:

June 2, 2005, 11:14 AM
The local IPSC club is supposed to be out there June 11, but they'll probably be over in the match bays, leaving the regular ranges available.

Weekend mornings are best for me . . .

June 7, 2005, 01:33 PM
I think I've got something going on the afternoon of the 11th, but if there is any progress on this, let me know.

June 9, 2005, 06:28 PM
Is anyone else a member of the Austin Rifle Club? Maybe we could do it there instead of Hill Country if we have enough members to "take" everyone for a morning? I can't do it the 11th but maybe a weekend after that?

June 25, 2005, 02:45 AM
OK, that one didn't happen, but we still need to keep the idea going....

June 25, 2005, 07:25 AM
Im in when ever it can be put together. I would like to vote for July 16 or 17th. Im saleing a motorcycle and then im going to adopt a Socom 16. It will probbly take about two weeks for all that to hapen anyway. And the 4th Ill be at the coast.

So dose anyone shoot at reds in oak hill??? I live five minets away, its very convenent so will probly be spending a good amount of time there.

July 16-17 is the Austin Gun Show. it is also the IDPA weekend for shooting. so that isn't really a good choice if you ask me for a specific date. alot of shooters go to IDPA and alot of others go the gun show.

Red's charges by the exact minute for shooting, i believe it is up to $12/hour. the advantage is that is indoor so its not as hot.

i think it may be a pain in the rear end to hold a shoot in the indoor range unless you rent the entire thing out. you get THR guys in there with others who arent on the board and it gets confusing.

further you aren't supposed to change guns between lanes, you are supposed to change shooters between them instead.

i think Texas Tactical in Henly would serve as a better venue. that is where IDPA shoots.

it is cheaper ($7-8 per day) but you have to be a member or a guest of a member.

Henly also allows full auto. Red's only allows full auto on Thursday nights i believe and only suppressed.

June 25, 2005, 02:03 PM
Steve, are you volunteering to bring out a few of your goodies from behind the gunshow glass for the shoot? ;)

I work right down the street from Red's but I'd rather not pay $12 an hour to shoot at an indoor range. It is like paying to be punished and not by some beautiful woman in leather!

I suggested the ARC because I'm a member there and I know a few other people are as well. We should be able to have enough members to get everyone in there and it is free.

Do we have enough Texas Tactical members to do a shoot there? It is hot but if we got out fairly early or late in the day and it is shaded then it shouldn't be too bad.

What about the weekend right after the show, the 24-26th? We can always carpool if necessary to reduce the driving burden.

June 25, 2005, 02:38 PM
I didnt realy mean the gathering should be at reds. I dont think that would be a place for a big groop meating. Tought it would be cool to meat someone who gose there. I solved the 12.50 an hour broblem. I bought a 175.00 six mounth membership. Well worth it if ya ask me. You can go as much as you want for six mounths. Rain or shine or100+ degrees.

i dont know if i'd bring any full auto stuff. i would end up having to babysit all of it since i'm legally responsible for them all, and somehow i think it would turn into a thing where where people show up each with 500 rounds of ammo and expect to be able to shoot all that through a machine gun since they went to WalMart and bought 10 boxes. yes, i've met people that get pissed that they spent $40 of their hard earned money for 500 rounds and get pissy when i tell them i didnt want them using my MG as a bullet hose.

sure, i may be assuming, you'll say, since they could have brought some of the ammo to shoot in their own personal guns. but when they show up with a 200-round ammo belt that argument is quickly thrown out the window.

it's happened before.....i've invited one person to go and somehow he invites another friend or two without telling me and they show up with 1000 rounds and all expect to feed it through my machine guns. then i end up basically being a free rental service and get stuck cleaning weapons later. :(

its been my experience that when you bring F/A to the range, people who you don't know will come up to you and expect to shoot it. i mean people who aren't even a part of your group will come out of the woodwork and expect you to let them shoot it or at least handle it, or else, you're just a selfish C3 owner.

so i tend not to do that anymore, because in the end it's just more stress and labor for me. i end up having to babysit a bunch of weapons instead of having a good time, then i have to clean them all up.

not that i don't trust anyone, but just because someone is on THR doesn't mean i will just hand them a machine gun. i have talked to another local C3 and he have talked about hosting a MG shoot sometime but that would be something completely different.

i'd probably show up with a personal semiauto longarm and a pistol instead. lately ive had alot of people "invite me shooting" which equates to "please show up with your machine guns so i can shoot them."

anyway im off my soapbox lol.......but i'd love to attend! :)

June 26, 2005, 11:28 AM
so i tend not to do that anymore, because in the end it's just more stress and labor for me. i end up having to babysit a bunch of weapons instead of having a good time, then i have to clean them all up.

That isn't restricted to F/A either! Just take a few noobs out to the range and watch them keep asking to go back without offering to bring ammo or clean up. I like taking people to the range and my policy has become 1st time free, 2nd time you bring ammo and clean it. I even bring a cleaning kit to the range

Of course, you can burn through the ammo a lot faster with your guns. Plus, they have to be clean since you display them! You know, if it weren't for that damn FOPA, it wouldn't be an issue :cuss:

Anyhow, do we have enough members to do a Henly shoot or an ARC shoot? Anyone want to chime in on their membership status? Last weekend in July?

June 26, 2005, 11:47 AM
ive even had people that want me not only to take them shooting but also supply the ammo too! imagine that. most of them were noobies that had absolutely NO idea how much ammo costs. but they were still industrious enough to burn through about $100 worth of ammo. imagine that.....i spent $100 of my money on ammo for someone else to shoot my guns full auto and i got nothing out of it. and i have to clean them too.

they usually end up on the sh*t list and never get invited again, and when they ask me im always busy :uhoh:

as far as ammo, i notice i dont shoot any more than 250 rounds on a normal outing with full auto. kind of weird, but i think i take longer breaks between firing them.

but anyway......

June 26, 2005, 10:01 PM
I'm REAL near Red's south. Live about 2 minutes away (WC&SW PKWY) and work about 5 minutes away. I enjoy the convenience, but I don't think it would be the best place for a gathering of this sort either.

June 27, 2005, 12:05 PM
There is nothing special about class III, it throws whole lot of lead and you dont hit crap.

June 27, 2005, 12:58 PM
Yeah, shotguns are the same way for me. No point in buying them either, eh? ;)

I think we have ruled out Red's as a possible venue. So, we've got Texas Tactical and ARC on the table as possibilities right now. Since F/A isn't going to be involved, we can go to either one without an issue. I'll ping another forum member who has an ARC membership and see if he can make it. That would let us bring up to 4 people to ARC for a shoot if we had it there unless someone else on here is a member. How many people could do it July 23rd or 24th?

June 27, 2005, 01:15 PM
23rd or 24th, Im in

what about Austin Skeet & Rifle Range on 290 East outside of Manor? we can probably reserve the CHL range if we do it in advance.

hey i happen to like full auto it means i can shoot with my eyes closed. :D

June 27, 2005, 02:10 PM
. . . they show up with 1000 rounds and all expect to feed it through my machine guns . . . Friend of mine has a Colt/Thompson in very, very, nice condition. People - total strangers, mind you - get peeved when he declines to let them shoot boxes and boxes of Wolf or some other crappy and/or corroded ammo through it.

Nonetheless . . . would this THR gathering be primarily a handgun or long gun shoot?

June 27, 2005, 02:16 PM
I might be able to join this shoot if the dates work out. I typically end up shooting at Red's South or HCR but both have their issues.
I've never been out to Austin Skeet & Rifle Range not the ARC and would like an excuse to remedy that situation.
I keep telling myself I'll get out to shoot the steel match on the 4th saturday of the month at HCR but I haven't made it out in months. So...even if the date conflicted with that it wouldn't be a big loss to me.

June 27, 2005, 02:19 PM

No offense, but I'm going to have to be a range snob and ask if we can pass on that range. I'm not a crazy saftey freak but I went there once and left because that place was less than a "well maintained range". I could see the people taking the CHL class through holes in the side backstop of the pistol range and that just isn't cool with me. Chances of something happening, probably negligible, but it still bothers me.

ARC is only a few minutes from there and it is free to boot with members. They've got an 18 yard range that you can shoot anything on and a great backstop to plink with carbines/small rifles on cans, jugs, or clays.

I could be alone in that opinion, so don't let me be a damper. I jut wanted to throw out my concerns on that range.

June 27, 2005, 08:25 PM
I'm interested in the shoot. I live close to Red's North and that range would be a mess, with regular shooters and THR'oaders on a weekend. ARC sounds good, I've been wanting to join anyways. Talked to some members at the Austin gun show a couple months ago and gave them my number, never heard back.

June 27, 2005, 08:37 PM
I'm in, just let me know when and where.

June 27, 2005, 08:48 PM

Joining ARC is easy. You go in, listen to a few saftey lectures, take a tour of the range, provide a backgroun check or CHL, do a quick skill display with your piece, and then you pay the dues. You need 2 people to sponsor you but if you don't know anyone in the club, then the people who "interview" will sponsor you assuming you don't blow your foot off or something. $75 for a year of access, not too shabby.

I can put you in contact with the right person to get the ball rolling for you. It takes a few hours out of your Saturday.

that's an understatement...putting it politely. i also don't think they've policed the brass in about 10 years either. :D

So, is anyone up for a shoot this month? How about the last weekend in the month, the 30th or 31st? Let's get something solid planned!

July 9, 2005, 09:18 PM
at Austin Skeet & Rifle Range on 290 East outside of Manor
between 9-930 AM, the range is usually vacant then, temp still should be reasonable I hope.
Who is in?

i believe i am open the least for now. the only gun shows that weekend are Lufkin and Midland.

July 13, 2005, 07:46 AM
I can show up also

July 13, 2005, 09:44 AM
Tell me about the range - rifle, pistol, or ???

July 13, 2005, 10:12 AM
is both rifle and pistol

July 13, 2005, 01:15 PM
I'll be there but I wish we could get enough ARC members to take everyone out there as guests. It is a much nicer range and cost-free. Sadly, nobody that I know who is a member has responded.

July 14, 2005, 01:59 AM
I might know of a 50-yard range that we can use for free. Unfortunately, my situation just changed today. I am no longer emplyed, and will have to spend my time and money looking for a new job. Anyone in the Austin area hiring?

July 14, 2005, 07:59 AM

What kind of work are you looking for?

July 14, 2005, 12:50 PM
Heck, right now just something to pay the bills. I've been working as a Service Manager the past few years for a local hi-tech company, but it's something I would prefer to get away from if I can. I was hoping that I would get a callback on the Gun Library position at Cabela's, but they cancelled the opening I applied for.

That's probably for the best, anyhow, as I don't think I would ever make it out the door with my paychecks, just pay me in ammo and guns.....

July 14, 2005, 02:14 PM
I would not mind squeezing off a few rounds and having a chance to meet a few of yall. Can any one give me directions from Dripping Springs to the range you decide on.
Also would need a solid planning date so I can see if I can get it together, between the ranch and my day job weekends can be pretty tight.

July 15, 2005, 09:19 AM
I should be able to make it on the 24th.

July 15, 2005, 02:50 PM
I'll be there. What time are you guys ( gals) going to show up ????
Steve. Are you going to be at the Austin show this weekend ???? I'll probably be there Sunday.

July 15, 2005, 03:04 PM
Hopefully it won't get hot too quickly....

July 22, 2005, 08:48 PM
See you guys there. Bright and early :)

July 23, 2005, 09:15 AM
Tomorrow: Some clouds and possibly an isolated thunderstorm in the afternoon. High 93F. Winds SSE at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 30%.

July 23, 2005, 10:47 AM
1- The range is covered, so unless it is really pouring rain I will be there
2-They charge $7 per gun BUT unlimited time. I have never seen the range officer scrutinize this, but if you have 8 guns out at once and claim 2 they might.
3-Porta John Toilets only so....
4-Remember you can't buy booze early on Sundays, plan ahead! :neener:

ill try my bestest to be there, especially if cowboybobb is there. we can all learn a thing or two from him...provided i can stay awake :)

July 23, 2005, 05:21 PM
Good info CT. I guess I won't bring everything I own!

How will we recognise each other? Should we all were white carnations or something? :D

See ya there.

July 24, 2005, 03:06 PM
Clear skies and 3 folks showed up! Lot's of commitments and lot's of no shows.
Well we had fun anyway, shot some cool guns and then with the humidy approaching 2000%, we went to find air conditioning.
We should definitely do it again and try to get more folks to show. Same or other ranges -or the ideal would be a private range.

July 24, 2005, 04:16 PM
CT, I'm glad I could make it out and meet you and Drizzt today. I had never been to the Austin Skeet & Rifle range so it was a good opportunity to see what was there. The covered bays were good to keep you out of the sun but didn't do much for the humidity. Having an RO there is also a plus (once he showed up) but that $7 per firearm charge is a bit limiting.

I'd love to get out to the Austin Rifle Club range some day and see if it is worth getting a membership there. I just need a member to get me in. (hint, hint).

July 24, 2005, 08:15 PM

I'm sorry I didn't make it, I overslept this morning really badly after being out a bit late.

I'd love to get out to the Austin Rifle Club range some day and see if it is worth getting a membership there. I just need a member to get me in. (hint, hint).

If anyone wants to shoot at ARC next weekend, PM me and I'll get you in since I am a member there. I can take 4 of you since my girlfriend and I are both memebers and can bring 2 guests each.

sorry guys

after working all night till 4 am i was too stinky (humidity) and pooped to stay awake. those car show groupies drove me nuts..... :(

it wasn't the best day with the humidity and the Hooters girls having their car wash event there- it was kinda distracting. I can't believe they go out dressed like that in public.
