What can you tell me about the S&W 15-3?

I tried the S&W forum and can't get in right now. TFL's search is down, nothing came up on a search here.
It's a K-frame right? What's a good price for a 95% example? How to they compare to other K frames?
IIRC, the one I'm talking about is in the 5k58xxxx S/N range. Late 70's, early 80s production? Would +P 38 be OK for this one?

Yes it is a K frame. That sn would put it in 1974. +P's should be o.k., but eventually it will show wear from them. Far sooner than standard rounds. A fair price would depend on your area. Here in WI, for 95% I'd go up to $250. If it's in your price range, grab it. My 15-2 is about all I shoot for handguns anymore. I love it. As far as how it compares to other K frames, I love the sights and the target trigger/hammer.

the m-15 (combat masterpiece) is somtimes considered a 4" m-10 with adjustable sights or...
it could be considered a shortened "target masterpiece" (k-22, k-32, k-38) with shorter barrels (2"/4"), narrower sight rib and lack of a trigger stop.
a very nice service weapon but a steady diet of +p fodder will shake it loose over time.

While it's true that a more powerful load will cause more stress than a less powerful one, I have fed K-frame S&W's a steady diet of +P's for 30 years, and haven't loosened up my oldest one yet. The standard velocity .38's are made to be safe in 100 year old guns. In a relatively modern model 15, it would take more shooting than the average person does in a lifetime to wear one out with factory +P's, which truth be told, still aren't very powerful when compared to a .357.
Hey, I'm from the Winston-Salem area of NC currently, where are you from? I lived in Boone for 4 years, and in the Hickory area for 13.

Bob, I'm almost to the west end of the state. Up in the Mountains a bit west of Asheville. Quite a bit west of Boone and Hickory.
Thanks for the info guys!

I don't know about shooting +P loads, but I paid $265 for a model 15-2 from 1963 that was described, and is 98% at a store here in Maine. But guns often go for a bit more here than most other rural areas.
Yes, the model 15 is a K frame. It was formerly known as the K-38 Combat Masterpiece. And it definitely is a masterpiece!

NEVER BEEN A BETTER ALL AROUND 38SPECIAL SIXGUN THAN THE S+W M15 4".
Any S+W M15 with the model number in the frame is perfectly okay with 38+P ammunition in any quantity you care to shoot.
I ended up trading off all the M15's I've had over the decades and I musta been suffering a severe case of rectal/cranial inversion to do so. Well, at least I had the brains to keep the K38's in 6".
Incidently, the M15 in the 2 1/2" version is also a deelightful 38 sixgun.
A pal of mine killed fourteen men with his M15 in the line of duty.

I recently bought a 4" 15-3 made in late '69 for $195. I think I got a great deal because it's in mint condition with no holster wear. It shoots great. It came with rubber hogue monogrips. I bought a pair of S&W service grips because I like the original look of the wood, but have to admit the monogrips are more comfortable to use. If you have the opportunity to get one, do so. You won't be sorry....Great gun.

Mine is a 15-2 and is as slick and smooth a revolver as you'd want to own. Not too many weeks ago I was at the range when one of the shooters was showing off his new S&W Performance Center gun. When I handed him my Masterpiece he dry fired it a couple of times he asked who did the action work. He was crestfallen when told it was a stock gun with only the addition of a Wolff spring kit. I didn't want to ruin his day completely so I didn't tell him the price that I paid for it.
They don't make them like that any more.
