I am hoping y'all might be able to give some some links that might help me with a musket I need to identify. A buddy of mine was given an old percussion musket and I have been unable to identify it. The musket looks to be mid to late 1800's and it has the same overall length, barrel length and caliber as a "British Pattern 1853 Enfield Musket Rifle". The problem is that the lock is obviously different from the P-53. Does anyone have any ideas on where I might find some good musket pics so I can figure out what this thing is. Many thanks ...

Any markings at all that you can see and can you determine caliber?

Pictures would certainly help, too.

The description would fit a U.S. M1855-1863 rifle-musket, or any one of many foreign muskets of the period, many of which were imported into the U.S. or C.S. and used in the Civil War. With some more info, we may be able to either identify the gun or point you in the right direction.

Since my initial post, I've been able to determine that this musket is actually a single barrel percussion shotgun. The barrel is a combination octagon/round at a lenght of 39". The bore is over half an inch, about .577" in my estimate. The lock is a "back action percussion lock" that was apparently quite common on "hardware store" guns as opposed to a military issue weapon. There are stampings on the barrel that include a single capital letter "T", the initials "T.B" in capitals, the number "17" and the word "LONDON" in full capitals.
