Protests Hit Illegal Immigration Summit

By ADAM GOLDMAN

LAS VEGAS -- Protesters on Sunday gathered outside a meeting where members of a controversial civilian group that has been monitoring the Mexican border gathered with other activists seeking to curb illegal immigration.

More than 150 demonstrators used placards and bullhorns and waved Mexican flags to get their message out: "Racists, go home!" they screamed.

Hundreds of people had gathered for the two-day summit titled "Unite to Fight Against Illegal Immigration" at a Las Vegas convention center.

Miguel Barrientos, president of the Las Vegas Mexican-American Political Association, said people sopping up the rhetoric of Minuteman Project founder Jim Gilchrist were not protecting the country _ they were harming it.

"They're creating division among Americans," he said. "We don't need it."

Nearly 900 Minuteman volunteers, some of them armed, patrolled the Arizona border in April.

Organizers said volunteers' calls to the Border Patrol resulted in the arrests of 335 illegal immigrants. Critics of the program, including Border Patrol officials, have said the group was little more than a nuisance.

In a 45-minute speech Sunday, Gilchrist said a declaration of war is committed every time a Mexican flag is planted on American soil.

"If this isn't a declaration of war, I don't know what is," Gilchrist said.

There were no immediate reports of violence. A protest against Gilchrist in California turned violent when demonstrators hurled rocks and unopened soda cans at police and people attending his speech.

Minuteman Project founder speaks at anti-illegal immigration rally
http://kvoa.com/Global/story.asp?S=3407816

Jim Gilchrist, founder of the Minuetman Project didn't come to Las Vegas to gamble or get a lap dance. He came to deliver his anti-illegal immigration message.

He also spelled out his version of hitting the jackpot: deport the millions of illegal aliens occupying the United States back to their home countries.

Send them back by plane or bus, give them money and do it civilly, he said.

"That's what I have in mind," Gilchrist told about 200 people who cheered him at the downtown Las Vegas convention center. He made his remarks on the final day of a summit titled "Unite to Fight Against Illegal Immigration."

Gilchrist and other speakers, along with those attending the summit, warned that the United States was under assault. Every time a Mexican flag is planted on American soil, it's a declaration of war, Gilchrist said.

"If this isn't a declaration of war, I don't know what is," Gilchrist said.

During his 45-minute talk, Gilchrist said he was not a racist and his group was not exclusionary.

Gilchrist said it was the "Mexican clan, Mexican Nazis" who were the racists, targeting anyone who was not of their color.

Outside the convention center, about 150 people demonstrated against Gilchrist and the summit.

The mostly Hispanic protesters waved plenty of Mexican flags and used placards, bullhorns and air horns to get their message out.

"Racists, go home," they screamed.

Miguel Barrientos, president of the Las Vegas Mexican-American Political Association, said the people sopping up Gilchrist's rhetoric weren't protecting the country, they were harming it.

"They're creating division among Americans," he said. "We don't need it."

It appeared the two groups couldn't bridge their differences, at least not on Sunday. The continuous shouting was too loud and the words too raw.

"Good thing I was in the Marine Corp. to fight for this garbage," said Greg Holland, 33, a disabled veteran and local political activist. "I didn't fight for the Mexican flag, I fought for Old Glory."

"Racists, go home!"
So the protestors were shouting at themselves? How bizarre...

Mr. Gilchrist, thanks for proving the protestors point. :D "Not of their color"? Gee, I thought this wasn't about race? Maybe not, hmmm.

So, everytime a Mexican flag is planted equals an invasion? Hmmm, let's see today, Memorial Day, I drove by the German-American club and I saw a German flag? Is that O.K.? Flying a German, British or French flag on Memorial Day?

I rountinely see St. Andrews Crosses, Dutch Sparrows, Italian flags, St. George's Crosses on the front license plates of motor vehicles where I live. Is this O.K.?

Sooo, glad we have the Border Guards to tell us what is acceptable and what is not. I get so confused. :p

To me, this was taken out of context.
Mr. Gilchrist, thanks for proving the protestors point. "Not of their color"?
This is the same quote in context.
Gilchrist said it was the "Mexican clan, Mexican Nazis" who were the racists, targeting anyone who was not of their color.

SO True. Either you are an American, or your not. I do not like this INSERT YOUR ETHNIC GROUP-American. +1 Nor did a rather wise man some 90 years ago. There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all. This is just as true of the man who puts "native" before the hyphen as of the man who puts German or Irish or English or French before the hyphen. Americanism is a matter of the spirit and of the soul. Our allegiance must be purely to the United States. We must unsparingly condemn any man who holds any other allegiance. But if he is heartily and singly loyal to this Republic, then no matter where he was born, he is just as good an American as any one else.

The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic. The men who do not become Americans and nothing else are hyphenated Americans; and there ought to be no room for them in this country. The man who calls himself an American citizen and who yet shows by his actions that he is primarily the citizen of a foreign land, plays a thoroughly mischievous part in the life of our body politic. He has no place here; and the sooner he returns to the land to which he feels his real heart-allegiance, the better it will be for every good American. There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

For an American citizen to vote as a German-American, an Irish-American, or an English-American, is to be a traitor to American institutions; and those hyphenated Americans who terrorize American politicians by threats of the foreign vote are engaged in treason to the American Republic.

-Former President Theodore Roosevelt, October 12, 1915, in a speech before the Knights of Columbus

So what does the nice couple with the table cloth really want?

If it's a corrupt nacro-banana republic they have more than one to choose from without remodeling the US.
Come to think of it, when WAS the US a "once corrupt narco-banana republic"?
I mean it had to be one once to go back to being one in their desired future.
I missed that in history class.

On the upside, the signs are in English.

"Racists, go home!"

This is their home. It is the illegals who should be going somewhere other than here.

The Atzlan types who want to break off pieces of the US for creation of a new racially pure state for their own ethnic group are traitors (if US citizens) or invaders (if not). Not to mention, they are rascists themselves for seeking such a thing.

Immigrant status and citizenship are obsolete concepts. You are either useful to the corporate-government complex or you are not.

The only borders today are the firewalls around the offshore bank accounts.

Protestors claiming that the land once belonged to Mexico or to the Indians are pretty much stupid. The land was, for the most part, either purchased (with money or trade goods) or seized as spoils of war. Just because that's not how things are done now doesn't mean it wasn't right or legal when it happened.

The whole notion of giving your enemy his country back and helping him get on his feet is a pretty recent one as human history goes-didn't come along until about 60 years ago. Up until then, if you won the war, you got to dictate the terms of the peace, which usually included punishing the enemy. Mexico lost the Mexican-American War. Argue all you want about who started it, and whether it was justified, it happened. We won. It's not our fault their army wasn't as good as ours. Because we won, we took California and what are now the Southwestern states away from Mexico, except for a chunk of Arizona we bought a while later to build a railroad on. That was how the game was played back then.

Same goes for the Indians. Just because we know think defeating an enemy and then taking his land away is wrong, doesn't mean that that wasn't how the game was played 150 years ago. Or maybe the Indians would have prefered that we followed the Star Trek Prime Directive and didn't interact with them at all and left them to live in their little villages with the Stone Age, or Bronze Age at best, technology.

Too bad our politicos are getting rich by corporate donations to turn a blind eye to a cheap source of labor.

In addition to tightening the borders the government needs a hardcore crackdown on businesses hiring illegal workers. Destroy the source and the little worker ants will quit coming over.

DOLANP you hit the nail on the head!! Our country is run by traitors from the White House on down! The way you can just walk across the border I can't believe anyone really thinks the war in Iraq is about terrorism. It is over control of the oil for the elite. If someone broke into your house and you had a good idea they would be back what would you do? I for one would make sure the first thing that my house was secure. Then and only then would I go looking for them. How did GWB handle it? He sure don't care how secure the house is, When the next 911 comes and we learn they just walked into this country will GWB be a great leader or a traitor? Now in the Senate McCain and Kennedy want to sell citizenships. I'm sure the founding fathers would be proud of the elected leaders we have. Traitors one and all!

Good God, I hope not! We would then be responsible for "rebuilding" Mexico.

Although that would probably be a better investment for the country than "rebuilding" Iraq...

everyone is welcome in america....but like this forum, you must feel the need to contribute something positive...ya cheap labor, but with that comes LARGE problems, crime, medical care, insurance rates, and general egg sucking attitudes....etc. If the outlet stors paid the farmers, half of what their product is worth.... the labor question would be solved....i.e. 40 pounds of red sweet onions $5.00, thats five bucks for the farmer...or .89 cents a pound in the store = $35.60...a $30.60 profit ??????
