Hey guys,
What would be a good size for a bullseye target for shooting @ 100 yards? I'm thinking +/- 8 inches. What about 200 yards? Any brands to recommend?
This is going to be mainly iron-sights and milsurp shooting, I dont need any of the fugly scope-in targets

I don't think that there's any bullseye competition at 100 yds (it's with pistols :uhoh: ), but the target I use for 100 yd shooting with rifles is the A-25, another is the A-33. The A-25 would be my recomendation as it's a bit easier.

I'm not going to compete, I just want something that's relatively easy to see at these ranges. I had been using yellowjackets but their bull's are barely 4 inches, thats a wee bit small for a hundred and too much so for 200.

The standard Highpower targets for 100yds offhand & sitting rapid (http://www.uspalma.com/Targets/PDFs/200%20reduced%20for%20100.pdf), prone rapid (http://www.uspalma.com/Targets/PDFs/300%20reduced%20for%20200.pdf), prone slowfire (http://www.uspalma.com/Targets/PDFs/600%20reduced%20for%20100.pdf).

I prefer small bullseyes and use a 30 foot slowfire pistol target to shoot at to 200 yards for rifles.

The bullseye on this target is nly about 3" across, but I can still see it at 200 yards.

9" paper plates for iron sighted rifles.

Those smaller dessert paper plates for rifles with scopes.

I would try to make the target appear about as wide as the front sight blade.

If R = sight radius, W = blade width, D = distance to target, and T = target diameter, then

W/R = T/D.

So T = DW/R

Be sure to convert units so they're all the same.

NRA highpower rifle targets used for the national match course are available reduced for 100 yards. The aiming black varies as follows: Simulated 200 Yd (SR-1) has 6.35" aiming black; the 300 yd reduced (SR-21) is 6.12" and the 600 yd reduced (MR-31) has 5.75" black.

The standard 200 yd target (SR) has 13" aiming black (which is the 9 ring).

These targets appear the same width as the front sight on M1's and M14's (and I would suppose the M16??) service rifles at the designated range.

+1 what HPS said...

For 100 yds and military irons you want an aiming black approx. 6 inches round.

I dont need any of the fugly scope-in targets I like the 'LR Scope Target A' (http://www.uspalma.com/Targets/targets.htm) for both scoped and iron sight use, but that's just me.

I just want a center I can see clearly without straining my eyes. I am nearsighted/stigmatism and use contact lenses. Sometimes I have trouble focusing on very small centers for any length of time. At 25 or 50 yards, I don't have problems, but at 100 yards or more it helps my accuracy to be selective. Since I shoot out in the woods a lot, sun and shade can obscure a small center as well. 6" center at 100 yards seems to be good for me.

I second the algorithm that TimRB posted with the note that it is intended for a rifle with a reciever mounted aperture type rear sight.

Also the sight picture with National Match sights makes the front sight appear slightly thinner than the diameter of the bull.

6 MOA (or ~.00175 radians) for the diameter of the bull seems to work best.

To use radians, just multiply the distance you are shooting by .00175, much easier than using degrees, BUT as Tim said...Be sure to convert units so they're all the same.

There's a hundred yard military target on Surplus rifles that you can download and print out. The PDF version is here. (http://www.surplusrifle.com/reviews/lilmiss/pdf/target.pdf) If you don't have adobe acrobat reader, here is a jpg version. (http://www.surplusrifle.com/reviews/lilmiss/graphics/target.jpg)

Just open 'em and print 'em out. I keep a stack in the truck for whenever I need them.
