Drilled Chamber

I recently purchased an Argentine Mauser that had been drilled and tapped for a scope mount. The only problem is the front screw hole is drill and tapped into the chamber, about 1/4 inch from the case head. All of the holes were filled with some sort of sealer. I have removed the sealer because I realize that won't get it. Is it ok to shoot if I install a mount screw in the threads? It is a cheap gun and I don't want to spend a lot of money in repairs.
How can I make this a shooter?

Thanks for your help,

Jim

Not a recommendation - just thinking out loud!

Unlikely IMO that would prejudice chamber integrity enough to matter, overall - but case may flow into hole on firing - that could be biggest prob and make extraction impossible.

If a well fitted blind screw inserted and loctited, then if finally flush with chamber - maybe go in slightly plus and ream - this could well be adequate.

"...How can I make this a shooter?..." Another barrel is the only safe option. Anything else and you'll have cases stuck in the chamber as a minimum.

Keep checking eBay for a barrel. I saw one new old stock Argentine barrel a few weeks ago.

The only problem is the front screw hole is drill and tapped into the chamber, about 1/4 inch from the case head. Well, lemme ask a stupid question - is the screw hole located in front of or aft of the case rim? It's not uncommon for the screw holes for a sceop mount to penetrate into the locking lug recess of the receiver, just AFT of the case head. If that's the situation, then you're OK.

If the screw hole is in front of the case rim - there are ways to fix this but not for cheap....

You can buy barrels on ebay. Lots of Mossberg barrel are listed there.
