Does anyone know how to convert FPS to MPH?

to get miles per hour, multiply by .681

owen - I think 88 fps = 60 mph. I remember that one from the Ohio State Police movies we were shown in PE back in the 60's. That particular fact always stuck with me. :)

1mph=5280 feet/mile ÷ 3600 seconds/hour = 1.4666666bar6fps so divide fps by 1.4666...7 using as many sig figs (significant figures) as are justified.

Thank you all...Another note to add to my reloading note book. (fps X .681 = mph)... :)

According to the answers here my Glock 37 is shooting 185gr bullets at 681 MPH my 357 loads with 158gr bullets are going 817.2 MPH and my 50 Beowulf shooting 335gr bullets at 1,293.9 MPH. The speeds sure sound different in MPH.

Yup...And a couple are exceeding the speed of sound... :D

Alright what is the speed of sound?
I know I've heard it before but this time I'll write it down (700 something MPH )?

Bullet, sound travels at 761mph at sea level with std atmopheric conditions as I remember. In fps I seem to recall it as around 1100fps. The speed varies with temp, alt, humidity, ect and is faster in liquid then air but I don`t recall the figure for water speed.

Boy, are we messed up in the US. SI (metric system) is much easier to use if you are doing any other calculations.
1 foot/sec = .6818182 mile/hour = .3048 meter/sec

Excuse me, but this is America and the British and the Canadians can keep the meteric system. By the way when we were contimplating going to meteric system several years ago the Canadians thought we were stupid to do so. If you are a scientist, doctor, chemist, engineer ect. you may need the meteric system for it breaks down to a finer value. The rest of us don't.
Bullet...My refference tells me that Speed of sound at sea level on average conditions is 740 mph or 1085 fps...Not to take anything from Ol' Joe because as stated it depends on a lot of factors as he stated. So I will willingly compromize with him on this. :D

1 foot/sec = .6818182 mile/hour = .3048 meter/sec = 1832.5 furlongs per fortnight.

Again, everything is a variable, but at 70 degrees F, 50% humidity at sea level, the speed of sound is 752 MPH. This is one of the tidbits I had to know to get my AW wings, but it's fairly useless because of all the variables.

= 1832.5 furlongs per fortnight.
Dang, ya beat me to it.
I remember (back before Google would do it for you) calculating the speed of light in furlongs per fortnight just as a joke.
Yeah, I'm a geek. :uhoh:

I like to use this here site for that there kinda stuff:
http://www.convertit.com/Go/ConvertIt/Measurement/Converter.ASP
You can either use abbreviations or just type the whole term in -- e.g.,
100 sm to nm
or
100 statute miles to nautical miles

This should bring back the memories then: 1,803,865,425,912.67 That is, going from 3 x 10^8 m/s. :neener:

So, it appears for the purposes for our discussion, that the speed of sound is to be given a wide berth, I usually try to stay subsonic, or keep the bullet supersonic during it's entire usable range.

Or make sure that the bullet exceeds speed of sound before it leaves the barrel and reaches the target before it drops below the speed of sound. In most cases of rifle applications this is easy. For pistol/revolver it may be a little tougher. :scrutiny:

I believe (I'm going purely from memory and it's been 90 days since I saw my guns) an easy way to remember the conversion is to "divide FPS by 3 and multiply by 2 for MPH".
Now, it's not exact, but it should be close. Somebody with Robert Rinkers book "Understanding Firearm Ballistics" can confirm my numbers.
BTW, I'm reviving all the old threads tonight...

When I was in junior high school in 1965, the teacher said that knowing that 60 mph was 88 fps was a fast way to solve may math problems.
5,280 feet / mile
60 minutes per hour
60 seconds per minute
60 mile per hour base line
5,280 [60]/[60 x 60] = 88
I see this on line calculator thinks that 60 mph is 87.87964

I just biked 13 miles in 59 minutes yesterday.
Oi, am I tired:(

I wish I had a gun that would keep the projectile in the air for an hour so this information would be useful.

What???? I'm suprised, 308win. You mean your super duper, magnifocent, does all, kills all, outshoots all calibres in the world Winchester 308 won't stay in the air for at least one hour??? And I thought.....What was I thinking here. The gods have let me down again.......My 30-30 does....I know. Because I hung the bullet from a string to prove it. :neener: :D

Here is a neat web page that offers a variety conversions...
http://www.onlineconversion.com/
This link will get you to their full spread of speed conversions and you can plug in some strange ones, even like furlongs per fortnight.
The www.convertit.com page mentioned above is pretty cool, too!
