I once heard a suggestion that you could put padding inside a 55 gallon drum with the ends cut off and shoot through it at a range such that you would reasonably reduce the amount of noise. The barrel would not be attached to the gun in any way and you would be shooting through a 8" opening in the barrel.
My question would be, Is such a contraption considered a silencer? You know how vague the laws seem to be. The way things are written you might consider a padded room to be a silencer.

Re: Fixed Noise Baffle and the NFA

March 25, 2003

Dear ATF,

It is my understanding that one could put padding inside a 55 gallon drum with the ends cut off, and shoot through it at a range such that you would reasonably reduce the amount of noise. The barrel would not be attached to the gun in any way and you would be shooting through a 8" opening in the barrel.

Is such a fixed noise baffle considered a silencer under the NFA?

Sincerely,
Gundog

Or something like that. ;)

There is a patent out on a device that does not reduce the decibel level noticibly, but shifts the frequency above the human hearing range. It is a chamber with a tuned gap and narrow kind of like a whistle. That would be interesting to fly past BATF or DOJ or whoever has the controlling part of the alphabet. I don't have a copy of the patent schematics anymore and I have never heard of it being produced.

cal4d4, at the SE SWAT comp last may i got to hear/nothear that device. a S&W rep had one attatched to a P22 w/ sub loads. he double tapped into the ground in fron of us about 6 feet away. you could see the dirt jump up and the click click of the slide and a small pop. way below the level of a conventional suppressor.
