Does anybody else name their guns?

My wife thinks I'm strange (which is probably why she married me), but anything important that I own has a name. The house, my truck, my kids, the pets, my guns...

My carry gun (USP Compact .45) is named Reason. (I figure folks might listen to Reason.) I've got a pair of Glock 19s named Romulus and Remus.

Anybody else, or am I just nuts like my wife says?

Not all my guns have earned names.

Some have:

AR-15 = Gugnir, Spear of Odin, good for poking relatively small holes in things.
M1A = Mjolnir, Hammer of Thor, good for smashing things flat
Sig P245 = Brunhilde: Swiss, severe, gets the job done, fun to be with when she lets her hair down.
Sig P226 = Heidi: The ultimate movie girlfriend of a gun, always perky & fun.

I only have one "named" gun. It was my Pap Pap's 1866 Winchester .44-40. I call it "Yaller Belly"....because he did.

Welllll...

- My first "named gun" was my ported S&W 640-1 .357, which I had engraved with its name, "Life Partner," on the backstrap.

- Next was my Kahr K40, engraved "Henry V, III.6.33-36"(in the edition I decided to use, these are King Henry's lines, "We would not seek a battle as we are,/Nor, as we are, we say we will not shun it./So tell your master.")

- Just for fun, my Finnish Mosin-Nagant 91/30 is "Uncle Vanya," my Russian 91/30 is "Boris the Bullet-Dodger," my Finnish M39 is "Ice Princess Katya," and my M96 Mauser is "The Swedish Chef." (Bork, bork, bork!) My Springfield 1903 MkI is "The Doughboy," and my M1917 Enfield is "Mud-Cruncher." (see the A&E movie, "The Lost Battalion.") My Turkish-marked Czech 98/22 Mauser is "Turkish"(natch), and my Ruger Redhawk is "Enforcer"('cuz that's what its previous owner had engraved on the barrel).

I've also named guns for my friends, such as the Astra Firecat .25ACP I dubbed, "Snarf."

Do my guns have names? Sure do. CZ 75B (or CZ for short), Bersa, 85 (as in Taurus 85), PT140, Daly (Charles Daly 1911), etc.

I don't name my cars either.

I never really got the practice of naming inanimate objects.

BTW- odd to see this thread now, I just had this conversation Sunday with my best friend's wife (she wanted to know what my friend and I named our guns, she names everything and couldn't understand that we wouldn't).

I like the idea of naming guns and cars and stuff. I usually go with a name that starts with the same initial as the make of the gun.

Nio,
I'm as warped as you are.

Some of the names of firearms that I've owned were/are:
Thomas for a very old SMLE
Tommy for a 'newer' SMLE (from Kipling's poem "Tommy Atkins")
Pat and Mike are two 22lr SMLEs which at one time were owned by Ireland
Boris is a Ruger 77 Mk II .30-06 which I used to harvest a Russian Boar
Duke is a 357mag Blackhawk
Irving is a 22lr Single Six (from a 1960s novelty song Big Bad Irving)
Kicks is my S&W model 66 'cause I get my kicks on Rte 66
Moses is my S&W SW1911

There are some others with names and some others without names.

June 1, 2005, 08:36 PM
I have a couple guns, both named.

My Ithaca Model 49 single shot .22 is named Karait, after a small but deadly snake in a story by Rudyard Kipling;

My J.C. Higgins Model 20, also known as a High Standard Model 200, is named El Viejo, Spanish for The Old Man, because it's 30-some years older than me.

My Dad has a gun that will most likely become mine, a Remington 788 carbine in .308 named Little Loudmouth. (yep, that's where I got my name)

A friend of mine named his NEF single-shot youth model 20-gauge "Little Kicker" and his Dad has a Russian M44 carbine my friend's named "The Russian Shorty."

We just seem to like naming guns around here.

SMLE
June 1, 2005, 09:18 PM
Yeah, I'm nuts. Most of my guns have "told" me their names. This phenomenon seems particularly strong with the old war horses.

Those I have currently;

"La Belle Dame sans Merci" 1777 French Infantry musket converted to percussion and brought to the CSA by Caleb Hughes.
"Moira" 1918 SMLE MkIII* formerly owned by the Irish Free State.
"Silé" (Sheila) Faz #4 MkII made for the Irish Republic.
"Madigan" 1909 SMLE MkIII
"Mathilda" 1909 SMLE MkI*** made up for Crown forces in Ireland.
"Parvati" 1946 Ishapore SMLE MkIII*
"Annie" M1 Garand
"Little Rocky" My Beretta 96
"Rylla" My 1936 vintage Colt Official Police. (H. Beam Piper fans will know the referance)
"Mithangiant" Colt MkIV Series 70 .45 Auto.(Tolkein Elvish for "Grey Iron Shadow". My Brother has "Morangiant" or "Black Iron Shadow")

Others I have owned were;

"Patricia" Enfield #2 MkIV* .22 LR
"Bonny" 1910 MkIII Ross
"Charlotte" 1923 Lithgow SMLE MkIII with Parker Hale target sights.
"Destiny" Early '50s S&W Model 27 with 3" Bbl. My late Mother once referred to this revolver as "A sweet little pistol".

ACP230
June 1, 2005, 11:43 PM
My Ruger 77RL in .250 Savage is called "The Deerslayer."
Many deer I've shot with it have fallen on the spot.

My first .45, a Model Of 1911 U.S. Army made in 1918 goes by "Old Veteran."

My Danish Madsen subgun is called "Hrothgar," after the Danish king in Beowulf.

The Remington 40X .22, a heavy target rifle became "Target Dawg," as soon as my son and I got it out of the CMP shipping carton.

Some guns don't seem to need naming. Some do.

My brother named his .45 Cassandra. No, I don't know why.

Geekwitha.45, I'm stealing Brunhilde. Going to carve that into my K31.

I introduced a girl to shooting, and helped her make her first purchase. It was an SKS Paratrooper. She decorated it with stickers and paint on the stock, and carved the name of whichever teletubby is gay into it. It gets a whole lot of laughs at the range... until they see her shoot.

I call them all "Betty". So if for whatever reason something needs to be said in public nobody has a clue.

Example: Climb out of the truck at the supermarket and my wife might say, "Betty is making copies". Translation: your gun is printing.

Then I adjust my shirt or pants leg etc.

I think naming guns is silly but a couple of mine have aquired names nonetheless. The first one that got a name was my custom Colt Gov't. Model. I was cleaning it after having put about 700 rounds through it in a three day training class and the name "Lucille" somehow occurred to me. The name seemed to fit and I've referred to her as Lucille ever since.

Last summer, I purchased a Kimber 25th Anniversary Custom but was unable to get to the range to shoot it for about two months due to the four hurricanes that hit Florida during that time period. That one was named "Stormbringer." I liked it so much I bought a second one, but I haven't named that one yet.

A couple of years ago an old guy was selling off a 13 gun collection that I heard about. I bought 12 of them. One was a Ruger Single Six convertible. He wanted $150 for it, and it looked brand new until I turned it over. One side is totally discolored. He said it was a new gun that he stuck under his pickup seat in a soft case. A deer had jumped out in front of him while he returned from shopping. A jar of pickles had broken when he slammed on his brakes. He didn't think to check the gun out until a couple of days later. I gave him a hundred for it. Later, a buddy asked me if I had went shooting over the weekend. I told him I had popped off a couple of hundred rounds off my deck with my "pickle gun"! He looked at me like I was nuts. It's the only firearm I've ever named, and I have a pretty good size collection. I've become attached to my "pickel gun"!! :)

A couple of mine have gotten names attached to them from time to time, but not usually on purpose. I've got a 308 Striker that I started calling Will because it's never met a load it didn't like. The wife started calling my Taurus 650 "the reverand" after reading an old post about naming guns and thinking it was funny. She also used to call my P32 Skate after it dropped out of my pocket and I kicked it, sending it skating across a parking lot. Had an SKS that was fondly refered to as "Money Pit".
