Anybody else try to be pragmatic?

I have this problem...I think I get it from my dad. After he got out of the Air Force, he worked on logistics problems for a defense contractor.

I have this habit of wanting to pick a single favorite cartridge for each category, then only buy guns in that. With some types of guns, it's easy. 12 Gauge for shotguns.

With others...not so much. While just about every handgun I like is available in .45ACP, revolvers are a different story. I like the .45 Colt round, but I find myself also wanting .357s and .44s, and maybe a .41 because I love the oddballs.

But with me, one thing leads to another. If I have a full sized .45, I want a compact. If I have a .357 snubby, I want a full sized. It's rough, this gun habit. I should've gone for something more affordable. Like drugs, or those fancy painted eggs with the jewels embedded in them.... :D

yo! nightcrawler - just interpret it that as you become more technically proficient you become more aware of the subtle nuances inherent in proper firearms employment. how's that? can you tell I once spent a year editting army field manuals? :D

Makes sense to me.
I'm partial to 1911 style and K frames.
Pragmatic? nah, we just like what we like.
We rationalize real well too...;)

You're just well balanced.

Yeah, I have that problem too.

Maybe try this: Figure out what your most pressing need is, and get the gun that fits. Then move onto the next pressing need. Maybe for HD/CCW use something in .45 or .357, or whatever strikes your fancy. Once you fill out your needs, then go for the cool oddball stuff.

Sure, sounds like a good plan in theory...:uhoh:

Well, most of my rifles and handguns are chambered for military-issue rounds or .22 LR. That's on purpose. If that's "pragmatic", then I'm it! :D

Hey, now, I can quit anytime I want to...

I just don't want to right now!

You know one can have variety and still do the pick a favorite/easy logistics thing.

Buy what you want regardless of caliber. However, pick what you prefer for serious business (maybe one per catagory) and stock up on that.

In my case I own autos in .380, 9mm, .40S&W and .45acp but I stock mostly 9mm (though I may start stocking both .45acp and 9mm). I have .357mag and .38 revovlers but I intend to buy .45lc, eventually .44mag, maybe a .32H&R mag, etc. I usually stock .38 or .38+P since it can be used in all my current revolvers and makes a lot of sense from a HD standpoint. In rifles I have .22lr, 7.62x39 and 30-30 and I plan on a few more calibers. But I stock up on .22 (of course) and 7.62 (though w/ prices so low I'll probably stock up on both 7.62x39 and 5.56/.223 when I get an AR or Mini).

Buy what you want, choose what you want to stock (if you think that way) and stock up on those calibers only and just buy the others a box (or a few) at a time as you need it or see a good deal.

You`re going to get as many differing opinions as there are board members. Then you`ll have those that have and those that want.

I carried revolvers for over 20 years. All my formal training is in revolvers. I love older S&W blued revolvers. Still I own and carry semi autos.

Collect some and shoot others? Shoot them all? Only own 1911`s or Glocks? Whatever rows your boat.:D

I only buy guns that work. Does that count as pragmatic? JT

I only want one of each model of Mosin Nagant, MAS, Enfield, US GI, Swiss, SKS, and anyother thing that comes along because it is there. I don't care what calibre they are.......chris3

Yes. I was the same way...until paranoia struck and I started to wonder, "what if I can't find any .357 or .308...what will I do then...I better get something in 9mm and .45 and .223 and...."

I guess I'm slow. What, exactly, is the problem here?

Yeah, I am pragmatic. I've pretty much stuck to .40 in pistol, 12 ga. in shotgun and .223 for rifle. I need to work more OT so I can get a .308.

Where's Twoblink, aka "Cowboy Logistics"? :D

I like to keep my calibers to a minimum. I even keep my clothing, furniture and other stuff to a minimum.

I have moved 9 times in the last six years, so the less stuff I have, the better.

I have a mattress supported by six Rubbermaid tubs, and the only furniture I have--two tables--fold down. I can load them up in the back of my Honda Crisis Response Vehicle and go go go.

I have this habit of wanting to pick a single favorite cartridge for each category, then only buy guns in that.

Me, too!

For instance, my single favorite cartridge in surplus Swedes is 6.5x55, my single favorite cartridge in P7M8s is 9mm, my single favorite cartridge in Glock 29s is 10mm Auto...

I like 308 rifles. I have three, and still want either a 308 VEPR or a FAL as well.
I also like Mosin-Nagants. I have an M39 that is very accurate, but almost too nice to shoot. So now I have to get another so I can keep the first one nice. I also have an M91/30. It is just a shooter.
I am kinda partial to the 9mm for handguns, and I also like just about any 22LR rifle or handgun.
I am sure that I will buy guns outside of those parameters, but they tend to be near the top of my list.
Generally, if there is going to be a purchase, it will come from that group.:)

I just buy what I like. Logistics aren't a problem for me because I reload.
