Should I be concerned about a cast lower receiver on a DPMS rifle? I can get a M4 lookalike localy for $630 or a forged model for 200 bucks more. I would just be using it for plinking and maybe someday a 3 gun match.

Done properly there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with use of investment castings in firearms manufacturing - period.

And, in my opinion DPMS does it properly.

Just to add. In November of 2002 I purchased a Classic Sixteen, NIB, for $675. This model has the 16" HB, A2 stock and rear sight, and forged upper and lower receivers.

sometimes the surface is a little rougher looking. However, even thought i'm a fan of the AR i think concerns about finish or color matching is sort of an oxymoron, its just not a purty gun. I have one that has an EA cast reciever and have no concerns at all about it.

Cast lower is not a big deal, as stated, it is under no stress. Basically an AR lower is just housing for the trigger mechanism and a magazine holder..

$200 bucks more for the forged model? That's a big hit for a reciever that would run roughly 30 bucks more at the most. You can get a stripped forged DPMS lower for $100 these days.

A cast lower will work just fine for your purposes. I personally like the cleaner look of the forged receivers.
