Thr Virtual Match - June 2005

June 4, 2005, 12:25 AM
For those who may not be familiar with the general rules of the matches please see the rules FAQ ( .

Shoot what you see or go for the gold.

This month’s match will give you a choice – shoot at an easy to see target zone or shoot at a ‘less defined’ target and try for a higher score. Think you can hit a target that you can’t see? Give it a try. Or, play it safe and go for the easy to see target near the bottom.

Some special rules for target placement and use this month:
1) Print the target as drawn. Do NOT enhance the lines electronically or by marking on the target. The thin, light, hard to see lines on this target are intentional! Do not add stickers or other markers on top of the targets.
2) Position the target with the dark circles in the lower right corner. The numbers should read correctly.

One target per entry/class
Five rounds per target

Shots falling outside the outer ring will count as zero.

The standard distances will be 10 yards for Pistol and 25 yrds for Rifle. (plus 50 yrds and 100yrds may be attempted for supported rifle classes.)

Some reminders on match procedures:
You are expected to shoot the match targets only for score and only the approved number of targets for each class. You should not be shooting several match targets and submitting the best score.

Normal scoring conventions apply – shots breaking the line to a higher ring count at the higher score.
Shots falling outside the outer ring will count as zero.

The final score you report must include :
SCORE ___________
Target Distance (yards)

UNSUPPORTED/FREEHAND CLASSES: 10yrds handgun 25 yrds rifle
PISTOL STOCK - Standard pistols with barrels 6" or less
PISTOL IMPROVED - Pistols with significant improvements from out-of-the-box or pistols with barrels more than 6".
PISTOL SCOPED - Any scoped pistol
RIFLE STOCK - Standard rifles with iron sights
RIFLE SCOPED - Any scoped rifle
AIRGUN PISTOL- un-scoped airgun
AIRGUN RIFLE – un-scoped air rifle

RIFLE STOCK SUPPORTED – Standard rifles with iron sights at 50yrds and/or 100yrds
RIFLE SCOPED SUPPORED - Any scoped rifle at 50yrds and/or 100yrds

You may enter any of the unsupported classes as ‘supported’ and identify the score as such. However, the only “Official” supported classes will be Rifle Stock Class and Rifle Scoped Class. Based on the low number of entries in the supported classes last month I don’t think this will be an issue.

The target can be found HERE ( )

This looks interesting. I'll have to print the target and see just how dim those lines really are. Thankfully I got my 10/22's scope close to zero last weekend, so maybe I have a shot.

June 6, 2005, 01:20 AM
Hmm...where would .22 LR Anschutz target rifle, scoped, with prone equiptment fall (coat, sling, but no bipod or rest)? Supported Any sight? Or unsupported?

June 6, 2005, 09:22 AM
VARifleman - Shooting prone will count as supported for this match. Since you have a scope the appropriate class would be RIFLE SCOPED SUPPORTED.

Note that the standard range distance for our matches is 25 yards. We will allow additional entries for supported categories at 50 and 100 yards. [In case you need an additional challenge :) ]

June 6, 2005, 11:54 AM
Thanks, although my range doesn't have 25, so I'll do 50, possibly 100.

June 6, 2005, 08:54 PM
OK, I'm gonna try to do one this month. Just to be sure, we can enter as many classes as we want, right?

Now to decide whether to use the SKS or 10/22

edited because I can't think and type at the same time :)

June 6, 2005, 09:49 PM
OK, I'm gonna try to do one this month. Just to be sure, we can enter as many questions as we want, right?

Questions? Sure ask any questions you want. :D meant classes, I'm guessing...yes, you may enter as may classes as you want, but one entry per class.

So, if your 10/22 has a scope on it you could use it for the SCOPED RIFLE CLASS and then submit another entry with your SKS under RIFLE STOCK CLASS. You can also enter as SUPPORTED RIFLE CLASSES if you shoot them using a support.

June 6, 2005, 10:04 PM
Another question: Does "unsupported" mean standing with no type of sling (ie: hasty sling)?

Mal H
June 6, 2005, 11:00 PM
I can answer that one since I asked it before. Standard rifle slings are ok and would be in the unsupported category. Anchored slings (the type that is attached to the rifle on one end and you stand on the other end to steady the rifle) would be considered supported.

Photo_guy, please correct these statements if they are incorrect.

June 6, 2005, 11:07 PM
Edit, found out that question, but what about sighting in on another target (like an A-51 that I'll be shooting next sunday) first before shooting the match?

Mark whiz
June 6, 2005, 11:30 PM
Just post them in this thread. Look at last months match thread to see how it's done.

June 7, 2005, 12:09 AM
VARifleman - Glad you will be giving it a try this month! Hopefully I can answer your questions.

Regarding what is "unsupported" : Mal H is correct we have been allowing slings that tie the rifle to your body but nothing that connects to the ground like bipods, trees, posts, etc.

As to shooting targets prior to the match target - yes, unless specified in a particular match instruction*, you are allowed to sight-in on another target prior to shooting 'for score'. Be sure to use a different type of target than the match target for this to avoid the tempation to cherry-pick the best score. You are to shoot one target 'for score' in each class you enter this month - no more, no less.

[* In rare cases we have had matches that specify shooting the match target "cold and on demand". This would be specified when it applies.]

BTW- you might want to look at the FAQ ( which has many of these answers.

There is a visual clue on the target that makes it simple to locate the 15 ring from left to right. Maybe change the target making the letting at the top light like the scoring rings?

THR NAME: Ankeny
CLASS: Pistol Stock
SCORE: 55 points
Target Distance: 10 yards.

Your are right, I probably should have made the lettering lighter but I don't want to change it now.

No matter what people will be able to estimate the location relative to the corner, or edges. Unless we made the target paper HUGE so the references would be far enough away there isn't much else I can do. There still should be some challenge to it.

June 11, 2005, 02:21 PM
There still should be some challenge to it.

I haven't shot my targets yet, but it sure looks like a challenge to me. Maybe some folks would like to shoot this blindfolded!

CLASS - Supported Scoped Rifle (Kneeling)
SCORE - 65 (yeah, I pulled one pretty bad :cuss: )
Target Distance - 50

June 14, 2005, 11:57 AM
The final score you report must include :
THR NAME: Cropcirclewalker
CLASS: Stock Pistol
Target Distance (yards): 10

June 15, 2005, 06:46 PM
I shot this one twice: once with a Kahr K9 and once with a S&W 642 with laser grips. I'm counting the 642 as Pistol Improved since it's obviously improved but there's no magnification. If you want to bump it over to Pistol Scoped, feel free.

CLASS: Pistol Stock
Target Distance (yards): 11 (closest I can shoot)

CLASS: Pistol Improved

CLASS: Rifle Scoped Supported
Target Distance (yards): 50yds

The 15 pointer was a non-issue. I couldn't even see the lighter rings at 50 yards through the scope. The white paper had a beautiful glare in the sunlight. I wonder if printing it on beige paper would have helped-- I noticed there were no rules about that.

So I went for the safe target-- one in the +8 and four in the +6.

June 24, 2005, 10:48 PM
THR NAME: Sako_75
CLASS: Rifle Scoped Supported
Target Distance (yards): 100yds

I kind of cheeted though. I could see the 15pt ring through my scope. I have a bausch and Lomb 4200 elite 6-24 x 40 mounted on a Sako 75 varmint in .223 rem. it will shoot one hole groups all day long.

June 25, 2005, 04:18 PM
I only have a 9x scope and I couldn't see the rings, but maybe I cheated anyway. I guessed at the first shot, then looked to see where it hit and adjusted using my 1st bullet hole as a marker.

The final score you report must include :
THR NAME: Cropcirclewalker
Target Distance (yards): 50

With the iron sights, I couldn't see the bullet holes or the rings. Truly a guestimate.

June 25, 2005, 11:46 PM
Having a scope that you could see the target in isn't cheating, I don't think. The rules say it's a "hard to see" target, not an "impossible to see" one.

But like I said before, I bet there's a color of paper that makes the lines more visible, and the rules don't address that.

June 27, 2005, 08:23 PM
Not too many entries this month. Obviously the snow must not yet have melted in those Northern states to allow you to get out to the ranges. :D

Given the lack of entries, and the Holiday coming up, I have decided to extend the deadline for entries to midnight July 4th. This will give you another weekend plus to get out and try this target.

I expect to have a July match posted by the 1st so you will have a chance to try both June & July matches at the same time if you wish.

Thanks photo_guy. I think we're planning to go back to the range Monday and I would like to shoot the rifle offhand class as well. The guys I was shooting with last week wanted to try it too, and I didn't have enough targets! I'll have to print a couple more. Looking forward to the July match as well!

I'll get an air rifle target in soon. That'll be it for me for the next couple of months though, as all my firearms are packed up for my impending move to Indiana.

June 27, 2005, 11:17 PM
CLASS: Rifle Stock
Target Distance (yards): 25yds

Not my best work ever, but I have not shot anything in a long time. I guess I should not have guessed where on the page the "+15" was and just gone for the black dot which I could see. I may give this a shot with my air rifle and .22 pistol and try to redeem myslef a bit... :banghead:

June 29, 2005, 06:18 PM
photo_guy, thanks for the time extension. I will shoot my targets by the end of the weekend. Also, it's too bad there haven't been many pictures of targets posted yet. :scrutiny: I really like looking at them. I'll have some up soon.

June 29, 2005, 10:23 PM
Mr. Bite,

I'da posted photos except that for the poor quality of my digital camera, I couldn't get it to even show the circles of the rings. Even when I printed out the original targets, at Kinkos, I couldn'r read the scores or the lines.

I am not whining. (I prefer American White, if yer gonna provide cheese)

This was a tough target to photographically reproduce. 'Splain it to them, Mr. Photo guy.

June 30, 2005, 06:22 AM
Mr. Bite,

That's NObite, please! :what:

Yeah, I may find the pictures to be tough to make legible as well. But, even so, it sure makes for interesting viewing to actually see the shot patterns.

I like to use TinyPic to host pictures. Works pretty well.

June 30, 2005, 07:56 PM
Yo, Mr. Nobite,

Sorry, not to take offense please. I was trying to be polite. Lots of times people call me "Crop" or "Mr. CircleWalker" or even "CCW", however, nobody has yet to call me Mr. Walker. I guess that is in respect for Chuck Norris. :D

I logged on to your link about the and note that it is a "Photobucket" owned enterprise. I already have a photobucket so I yam wondering, "Why not just keep my photobucket?"

Is there a benefit?

[aside] This is not thread drift. I enjoy looking at the targets too. If there is a benefit or an advantage to a particular image hosting site, it would be to all our benefits to find out about it. [\aside]

edited to add: I fergot to say......I fer sure don't scowl at anybody in school. I don't even know who yer niece is. Or anybody else fer that matter.

June 30, 2005, 08:15 PM
Hey, no offense taken. Just joshin' you.

I really didn't know who TinyPic was affiliated with, just that they do a nice job of rendering a small image suitable for these type of forums. I actually have an account with WebShots, but they don't have a similar service. TinyPic is pretty user-friendly and requires no subscription to use. Just my $0.02.

Ah, yes, the niece. That's a quote from a movie that has me laughing out loud each time I see it, Uncle Buck.

Ok I got my one target for the month shot today:

THR NAME: Mark whiz
CLASS: Air Rifle - Open Sights (Daisy 753)
SCORE: 55 points
Target Distance: 10 meters

I shot at 10 meters as this is only a 10 meter rifle.

Here's the scanned target, I tried to highlight it as best I could:

I finally got out to the range and was able to shoot some match targets. I got a chance to try out my new (to me) M1 Garand. Since it is new to me I didn't go for the 'hidden' target I just went for the visable one.

THR NAME: Photo_guy
CLASS: Supported Rifle Stock
Target Distance (yards): 50 yds

I also used my Kimber Pro Elite and went for the 'hidden' target with this one. Hit the +15 twice.

THR NAME: Photo_guy
CLASS: Pistol Stock
Target Distance (yards): 10 yds

I may be able to get target images posted soon.

July 4, 2005, 10:33 AM

Target Distance (yards): 10 yds

Next up, Ruger Mark II with Red Dot

CLASS: Scoped Pistol

Last up, Marlin 1894C, stock, unsupported.

Lots of fun. Thanks for hosting, photo_guy. In the near future, I look forward to putting my new M1 into competition. <ping>

I hope you all enjoyed the June match. (at least all 9 of you that posted scores  ) The score summery is below. Quite a few classes with no entries or sigle entries. I am considering cutting the number of classes down again since there does not appear to be enough interest to support this much diversity.

ARRRGH, I missed another one. I always forget to check under the competition forum regularly, so I usually miss out. I just printed out some targets to try, but as far as posting my scores, they wouldn't be much competiton. Probably 10 or 12....on a good day.

Photo Guy, I appreciate all you do, I'm just a laggard. :( However, I almost always get the targets after the fact and have a blast with them. :D
