Bison loose in Austin

Some bison escaped and have been running around my neighborhood this afternoon. It was quite the excitement around here, with a low flying news chopper and about 12 sheriff cars, plus a couple of livestock trailers. I live about 15 minutes from downtown Austin.
The next time someone tells you you don't really need a manly gun like a .45-70 because you live in the suburbs, remember that it's only a matter of time before bison are running around your neighborhood :D
Here's hoping that they catch them all or at least put them down more humanely than that last bunch of escapees that had to repeated face the not so business end of a .223.

i wonder how many well-placed rounds from a 223 it would take to whack a bison...
what about less-than-well-placed? say, randomly distributed

Same thing happened here in Colorado Springs a few weeks ago ... cops took over 100 rounds of .223 (and managed to hit a couple of houses and a car too).
Maybe the old CSPD needs to go down to Austin for Bison Control Training

yeah, there should have been an A-Team episode where B.A. welded armor together plus some kevlar/ceramic plates to make a bulletproof vest for Bison, kind of like the old knight's armor

i wonder if the FBI Anti-Terrorism people have included armored bison in their plans?

Must not be enough excitement there if people get that wound up over a coupla buffler. Neighbor across the road has some, when they get out the neighborhood kids load their BB guns, mount their four wheelers and herd 'em back in...

OMG! There is a rabid bison epidemic in the USA??!!
I must start watching the local news - I am sure that a herd of these beasts are already roaming the Southern Ohio area as we speak! And I am undergunned!
The .223 will not reach out and touch one of these monsters - it will only make them madder. I am afraid that the .480 Ruger ain't gonna' help, either.
If the wife can shoot 2 guns at once, I can only pray that the .480 in one hand, and the .44 mag in the other can slow the final attack when coupled with her 2 .45's!
Forget the CDC, we need the BATF, the Bison Attack Totally Force to help us on this one. Thank God that the 10 round mags have been repealed - I'll need the last several rounds for us to relieve us from the carnage. I hear that Bison have 18" fangs, a hinged upper jaw, and can swallow a man whole - they are like a combination of an anaconda, a 2,000 pound lion, and a pit bull all rolled together with an attitude!
I actually hear that they have been trained to the Russians years ago, and are really "sleeper" agents programmed by the KGB to take over the US.
Yikes, we are all in trouble now.
I live in fear for now........

OK, but have you heard a discouraging word?

It's Austin. The liberal center of the southwest. There is always a discouraging word. Now all we need is antelope to play with the deer. :neener:

All you need is a bale of hay on a pickup tailgate and the buffalo will follow you anywhere.
But just in case, make sure the pickup is painted "tactical black" :p

It's a bigger problem than you imagine; You apparently haven't seen what a herd of bison can do to your shrubbery, in only a matter of minutes.
Sure did a job on my new fruit trees, when my neighbor's got loose... :cuss: All that grass, and what do they want to eat? BARK

Barkin' up the wrong trees, were they?

Any one know how this ended up?
Was it the Colorado Springs “shoot ‘em all, and a couple of cars, plus a house” ending, or the Baltimore County “heard ‘em into a tennis court, wait for the news cams” ending?

All ended well.
According to this morning's paper (the bison made the front page, above the crease), the deputies were not trying to round up the bison so much as keep them away from people and cars, and they did a pretty good job. The bison bedded down in a field during the late afternoon, at which point the owner came and shot them with tranquilizers. Apparently the deputies had cattle tranquilizers but these weren't the right kind for bison.
The owner of the bison could not be reached for comment and it was unclear how they had been loaded up and taken away, but apparently they were taken home some how.
The bison were origianlly being held in an enclosure designed for cattle, but they broke through the fence.

Would of made for one hell of a BBQ this weekend :D

Why, I am sure that the cattle tranquilizers would have worked on the bison - it they used about 400 each.
I'm thinkin' that a female-bison-in-heat call could have been utilized on them, but I am sure that PETA would have a problem with that.
'They broke through the fence' - sure they did, since the posts were not made from steel I beams and 4" angle iron.

I know what you mean Jamie. My brother lives in Jersey a couple miles from a Bison farm. The farm looks like something out of Jurasic Park: they sink telephone poles into the ground as fence posts and string several 1 inch cables through the posts to act as a fence. The people who work the farm only go into the enclosure two at a time, and only on horseback.
My brother's family went to see the farm, and the camera they had made a noise one of the bison didn't like, so it chaged the fence. He said it bounced off of the fence, and he wasn't sure if it was his imagination but he thought the ground moved when the bison hit the fence.
When I walked over to try and see them yesterday a deputy told me to make sure there was a vehicle between myself and the bison. Seems like good advice.

At least we won't have a "What's the best cartridge for bison" thread. Seems like the old hunters preferred .45-70 Gov't. So instead, let's debate something else: Sharps or Trapdoor? Or go with a levergun?
Reminds me, in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, there's a herd of bison. Drove through the park on several occasions - the first time was one of those classic double-take moments - "Was that what I thought it was?".

It's a bigger problem than you imagine; You apparently haven't seen what a herd of bison can do to your shrubbery, in only a matter of minutes. Maybe the bison are on a quest for the Holy Grail? :D So instead, let's debate something else: Sharps or Trapdoor? Or go with a levergun? I'd go with a levergun myself, preferably from behind/indside something big and heavy.

On any given day in D.C., there's a lot more rampaging bull.
Where are those dart rifles when you really need them?

I drove across the Wind Cave National Grassland in southern South Dakota back in 1983. It was all open range with herds of buffalo grazing on the grass. They had signs posted 'Buffalo are dangerous animals, please stay in or near your car'. I was on a motorcycle coming home from Sturgis.

Well, the Sharps in .45-70 will do the trick, but reloading's too slow if you're within charging range.
