Just bought my 1st shotgun! I have a dozen or so handguns but always wanted a pump shotgun. So here is my 1st dumb question, the barrel I now own is a 28" ribbed with a choke tube. I would like to buy a shorter barrel for home defence. Is a 20" non-rifled slug barrel the same thing as a smooth bore 20" barrel? Also, can a private citizen own an 18" police barrel?

you can have any length barrel on your shotgun as long as it is at least 18 inches long. anything less than and you have get the ok of the BATF

The only difference between a 20" smoothbore barrel, and a 20" Non-rifled slug barrel is, the slug barrel has rifle sights on it.
Sometimes the slug barrel will have a different choke, but usually both are Improved Cylinder.
In other words, the only difference is the rifle sights to make accurate shooting with the slug barrel easier.
It is completely legal to own an 18" barrel, Police model or not.

I will also add as a general rule the 870 Express Slug barrels with the sights are cheaper than those 18" or 20" smooth bore police barrels. The slug barrels for the Express version can often be found as cheap as $60.00 which makes for a very cheap short barreled home defense shotgun. I have two 870's set up this way and highly recommend them!

Thanks for the quick replies. A follow up question, can I shoot 00buck as well as a slug thru this barrel?

Yes. A smoothbore bartrel works well and safely with shot or slugs.

Old thread, but for anyone barrel shopping:
I just got the Remington 18" smoothbore police barrel from Cabelas for $109, and I couldn't be more satisfied. The barrel has a good matte finish, is very sturdy, and patterns are excellent.

I just posted a question about setting up a slugger combo and your lead may save me some $$$ when obtaining a barrel
