Okayfine - Iraqi leadership KNOW that there are gonna be large-scale surrenders, right? And they know that we're gonna have sizable numbers of troopies watchin' 'em, right?

What if they seed the surrendering folks with disease carriers? Or what if they use a "surrender ruse" to draw our folks in, then open up on 'em? Then further scenes of actual surrender may be fired upon by uptight troopies, resulting in a lack of willingness to surrender...

Dang, but I think my brain's gonna 'splode...

Had those very thoughts myself last night Bogie. Lots of possibilities in this war, all bets are off and the rules have been changed. A terrorists antics are now in play at all times.

There's an easy cure for that - stop listening to yodeling music, and get your green butt back to Mars!

Don't doubt for a minute that at the first sign of chem/bio, every ally in theater will be in MOPP-4 gear. Hard as hell to operate in, but necessary. Casualties should be minimal.

I assume we would then begin sending disarmed surrenderees back to their barracks (just as we might if they give up in mass numbers without the chem/bio contamination).

They're Iraqis, not that smart.

Maybe pop Ebola downtown Baghdad or where the Repubs are out on the wing?

Such horrid thoughts are old hat among the military, bogie, and I believe every possible contingency is well planned for.

One of my horrid thoughts is the Republican Guard using NBC ordnance on Iraqi units attempting to surrender. :what:

They did this in the last war, with a column of tanks appearantly surrendering in the early days. They approached with turrets facing rearward, and when they got close, turned the turrets around and opened up.
The point was to get our troops to fire on anyone trying to surrender, suspecting it might be a trick. Didn't work all that well.

I don't know if it's true as I heard this only once on the radio on the way into work today, but one report had it that Iraqi troops are waving a white flag, then when Allied troops get in close opening fire.

If it's so, then one of your horrid ideas is happening now. Pray the other doesn't!

Well this morning, I heard that, in fact, surrenderees did indeed come in close to our troops, under guise of surrending, then killed several of our people. Haven't had time to hear/learn any more.

Actually, many (most) of the big losses sound like they started this way. According to the briefing from the Middle East they have on large and small scales been using this kind of tactics time and again.

Soldiers dressed as civilians cheering US troops until they pass by and opening up on them. Paramilitaries doing the same.

Troops "surrendering" until the US troops get close in then going to cover and opening up on the US troops.

One group "surrendering" to lure in US forces, going to cover, then paramilitaries dressed as civilians open up on them.

These are only the cases I remember off hand them mentioning.

Really does sound to me like they are trying to get us to fire on those who appear to be surrendering so that the world can see us as firing on surrendering troops. Puts us between a rock and a hard place. You don't and you lose guys who could have been saved. You do and we look like the war criminals (not to mention sometimes the "surrendering" soldiers are ambushing us and sometimes they actually are surrendering).

Sounds also like they are trying to get us to be more untrustful of Iraqi civilians and (in their hopes anyway) start shooting civilians.

And then there are the reports that some of the guys from the ambushed convoy that took the wrong turn were executed.

Reporter interviewed a soldier guarding some surrendered prisoners this afternoon. Asked him what he thought about the white flaggers killing a dozen soldiers yesterday.

He was speechless. After a few moments all he could say was "I was not aware of that".

After a few moments all I could think was "why not"?
