How do you guys do it?

Ok, so I'm getting dressed to go to Walmart. I'd done a little bit of experimentation with my rig, but not much, as it only arrived a few days ago. So, I throw on the mag holder, flashlight, cell phone, leatherman, two EDC knives and my Glock in a Don Hume IWB. :(
I feel like fricken Batman. WTH? Where do you put all the stuff? I've at least got more belt area than some. I don't really know how guys with a 36" waist do it.
Went to Walmart. Nobody even looked at me. As usual.
I definitely need a nice gun belt. Had to keep adjusting my pants.
Kinda cool, though. A t-shirt and an open short sleeve printed shirt, and my Glock 22 disappears.

How do I do it?

Delete the knives, leatherman, and flashlight.

Good call on a decent gunbelt; I wouldn't even try packing my firearm without mine (1 Milt Sparks, 1 Gunner's Alley).

You need to customize your load for what might happen. I understand that anything might happen, but at the same time, you can't prepare for everything without loading yourself down with mucho extra weight. When I carry, I usually have my 1911 in a Milt Sparks VM2 on my strong side, with 2 mags in a Craftsman cell phone pouch (the PERFECT size; try one yourself; for $6 you can't afford not to) on the weak side (for balance as much as anything else). I can carry all day like that without feeling overloaded.

Trust me, its not easy.
First of all get a GOOD STIFF GUNBELT, makes a world of difference, I use a GALCO.
I usually carry a small flashlight, pistol, cell phone and keys.

Experiment.

keep your pistol IWB, and put the rest of your bat stuff in a fanny pack.

enjoy.

OK, I think I see where you are coming from. I'm working with a 35" waist, so I buy 36" pants.

Wearing the relaxed fit I can IWB my carry, have a spare mag and Bucktool on my belt, 2-3 knives in my pockets and not feel weighed down or print.....t-shirt or tank top under a denim shirt.

Whether I just got off the bike or got out of the car, I usually find this works.

Try changing knives and carrying the cell phone another way.....other than that I would say endeavor to minimize.... ;)

Initially - it can seem one is loaded up! Have to get used to the feel of it all.

I have a decent belt - SIG lives 3.30 in a nice leather K&D OWB rig . Leatherman Wave is opposite side and sometimes E1e is clipped next to that - for now tho cos of pocket options in short pants - it's in outer left patch pocket.

Cell phone goes in left patch pocket of Smith & Alexander vest - right patch pocket of vest holds NAA mini.

Top breast pocket of vest holds my pipe and baccy! :p

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Oh forgot - Buck Mayo is clipped into left main pants pocket.
Uh, along with the gunbelt I've got these things called pockets ;)
The light, knives and cell usually wind up in pockets, I wouldnt think of trying to get it all on the belt. Think of dressing in "stories", the first floor being the pants pockets, second floor is the belt and so forth. Unfortunately, since the last century my mezzanine has been expanding, so to speak, so I have a little more belt space than during my aerodynamic days
What kills me is my PDA, without which I am lost. It is just bulky enough to not fit anywhere.
Check out some of the Maxpedition pouches. I have and use several. They enable some of the stuff to be consolidated into one area, saving some space.
Ok, so I'm getting dressed to go to Walmart.
That is your problem, you are getting dressed up to go to Wal-Mart :neener:
I can't hlep with the pistol, can't carry one of those yet. But when I got the knife, flashlight, PDA, cell, keys, insulin pump and testing supplies, I run out of room. You gotta layer your pockets. Non immediately needed stuff goes to the bottom (stuff you won't be needing to pull out in a hurry). More readily accessible stuff goes at the top. Things get shuffled around to make them fit, except for the knife which is always clipped into the right pocket, and the SureFire, which goes upright oin the left pocket.
It helps if you can do things like clip keys and phones to the outside of pockets.
lol...
I cheat. I carry a purse.
On the belt is the gun, in a Comp-Tac C-Tac holster. If I'm wearing a pair of RR5.11s, I drop an extra mag in the "mag pocket." I carry keys in one front pocket, a phone in the other. Wallet in a rear pocket. Knife clipped in the front pocket. I also clip a flashlight in the other front pocket, occasionally (when I'm going out at night.)
The purse (a Maxpedition Fatboy) carries the PDA, flashlight, checkbook, USB thumbdrive, Leatherman, pocket screwdriver set, cough drops, band-aids, business cards, 123 batteries, and other stuff, as needed.
The other stuff is often a gun (if I can't carry on-body) or BUG, digital camera, nalgene, candy bar (Take-5... mmmmm...), bunny (my daughter's stuffed bunny that she can't be without), spare diapers, a wind breaker, AR15 mags, juice pouches, boonie hat, FRS, lunch, etc.
The only thing I carry on my belt is my gun.
spare mag is in front left pocket (and only with my Kahr ... with my Steyr I usually don't pack a spare ... 10+1 should be enough for 99.999% of the extremely rare times I'd need it).
wallet in back right, keys in front right knife in front right (clipped to top edge of pocket).
cell phone either in hand, in shirt pocket ... sometimes in front left pocket with spare mag or hell, I'll just leave it in the car (I hate it anyway ... its for work or I wouldn't have one).
Get a good belt and good holster. I have a Don Hume for my Kahr MK9 that came with the gun ... I don't much like it (its a good holster, but its a strait drop and I prefer a cant) but I've got a COM DC Special on order with HBE :D
Hmm, let's see-
Fella's;
I'm with Zundfolge, in that the only thing on my belt is the gun. And, I also don't usally carry a spare mag. The cel phone is in a jacket pocket, do carry a decent folding knife in a front pants pocket.
It's sorta interesting, I'm a professional locksmith. Part of the job is unlocking cars at any hour of the night, in neighborhoods that frequently aren't 'gated'.
Situational awareness is worth any reasonable number of spare mags you'd care to name. Yeah, I carry a flashlight, but not in daylight hours, then it stays in the van. No, I didn't get into this business just last week either.
For belts I have been happy with Ted Blocker products. He has good stuff at
good prices and he is close, in Tigard. Lots of good choices.
One thing I learned a while back from Ted was to have seven holes in the belt
and a bit closer together than the five holes in most belts. Gives a little better
fine tuning when loading up.
Ok, well. The folders are both in pockets, and the keys are clipped to a belt loop.
I definitely don't need to gain any weight. I'm already 50 lbs over "fightin' weight". And my "fightin' weight" is a lot more than most folks fat weight, lol!
I guess I'll just have to rearrange some stuff. I was carrying 3 mags, but can you blame me? They're Klinton mags.
A good carry belt is the foundation. After that a good pair of suspenders. All elastic & 1.5 wide. What ever covers the weapon covers the suspenders. You can keep your pants looser for easy access & presentation when needed. I am a real 34 (at waste line & not down under gut) so buy 36's for the needed room. Will carry 24-7. :) :) Carry 2 extra 10 rd mags for Kimber compac side by side in a Hoffner's minimal. Pepper in front of that & knife in front pocket. You should get used to it in a short time. ;) They that love liberty more than life die only once. They that fear death more than oppression die every time they close their eyes. Me.
A spare magazine is a must, not for 17 extra rounds, but rather for malfunction purposes, you need it when the first one is under a car! After being dragged out with force!
G19 in Glock belt slide (modified) spare G17 magazine on left side, Glock mag; holder. Surefire G2 in Glock 9 or .40 magazine holder you need to pour boiling water on the pouch, then force flash light in it, lens first. $5.00 flash light pouch (tactical black!) works perfect.
Wilderness 1 1/2" instructor belt, same colure as pants. White tee shirt tucked in, one or two buttons fastened on denim, or "tourist" shirt Florida don’t you know. Benchmade right frontpocket.
The Glock belt slide and the two mag' pouches weigh nothing!
Keep safe.
I already carried a bunch of crap on my belt, so adding a gun wasn't too big of a deal. (Other than 'print-itis'. but that's a whole 'nother thread!)
On my belt is usually: Right hand Side: Gun (I or O WB), leatherman usually in front of gun.
Left hand side is my flashlight and cellphone, if the phone is not in the front left pocket, which lately it has been..)
Speed loader in front left pocket, CRKT M16 clipped inside front right pocket. When I carry an auto my reload will usually be on the belt's left side, near the flashlight, IF I have a mag pouch for it, otherwise, left front or rear pocket.
I like when I can wear a jacket! Then, most everything is in the jacket, with only gun and leatherman on the belt.
Summer is proving challenging already. Hard enough to keep the gun hidden. Carrying all the other stuff is proving burdensome. Might be time to check out a Royal Robbins vest or something...
And I still need to get a real gun belt!! My current belt is quite strained doing the job now.
I dont bother concealing the knife, it just gets clipped to the pocket. I only carry the flashlight at night, and that goes in a jacket packet. As for the gun, its usually on the compact side (bersa .380 or SP-101) carried at about 4-5 o'clock. I dont carry a spare magazine for the Bersa (*horrors!!!*), and if its the revolver i carry a speedstrip in my right-hand pants pocket. I cant seem to carry all the ubeer-tactical gear on a belt. Im sure its possible, but i honestly cant see that its worth the effort.
Yep. I tried all this...for a while...until my already screwed up back finally gave up. No more IWB (or even OWB) for me. I just utilize all my pockets and pack light.
-Speed strip reload
-Keys
-Wallet
-Benchmade Mel Pardue auto folder
-Cell phone
-Sometimes a Surefire E1e
I also have a Maxpedition Fatboy that is usually left in the car with other essentials in it (digital camera, digital Handycam, Surefire 6P, Leatherman, checkbook, notebook, reading glasses, first aid kit, Ranger compass (mostly for the mirror), medicine, lighter, pens, nail clippers, small measuring tape, PDA, spare 123 & AA batteries, and a small Swiss Army knife).
SpecOps produces a small universal mount pouch they call the "Frontal Assault Pouch" that works extremely well for solving the problem of where to put all the extra stuff.
It can be belt mounted and is big enough to carry a knife, Surefire Executive or 6P and a spare magazine or two.
I put all that stuff in mine and keep it from rattling by seperating the stuff with a piece of flannel.
I carry on left side with my cell phone pouch and only one person ever asked what was in the pouch and I told them the car charger and headset for the phone, "Oh" was the reply I got in return.
Good stuff.
Gun on belt, keys and wallet in pockets. Knife clipped to IWB at 1oclock under my belt. Cell sometimes on left pocket. Am I the only guy who clips a knife IWB instead of in the pocket? Pocket carry clipped makes pockets hard to access without removing my knife.
I wear a Wilderness Instructors belt.
G-22 in a IWB holster.
Knife clipped in support-side front pocket.
Spare mag (worn on road trip, left at home or in vehicle when out running errands).
Keys, wallet in appropriate pockets.
Flashlights, multi-tools and other junk is left at home or in the truck.
I always carry a small LED flashlight, pocket knife, wallet, keys, zippo lighter and, when I am not at work or carrying something larger, a SW 642 with speed strip reload.
flashlight, pocket knife and zippo go in the left front pocket or left cargo pocket if I am wearing any type of cargo shorts.
642 goes in the right front pocket with the speed strip going in either the watch pocket if wearing jeans or the cell phone pocket on 5.11's.
wallet goes in the left rear pocket
keys go in either the right cargo pocket or the right rear pocket
When I can, I carry a Springfield Lightweight Govt' model in place of the j-frame and always a reload for what ever I am carrying.
All this is supported by either a Wilderness 44" Instructor's Belt or a Safariland Basketweave Velcro belt when I have to wear nicer khaki's for work.
Never a problem of where to put stuff. Right now (because it is my issue) I carry a Glock 19 in right hip holster, double mag pouch on or just behind left hip, a cell phone and a beeper on my belt. Sometimes pepper spray, carried on weak side in pouch. Flashlight, knife or knives, keys etc. in pocket of pants or jacket or vest or shirt. Both wallets in back pockets - yes two - one for creds one for personal stuff. Of course if I don't want anyone to know I am an LEO when off or on duty, I carry just the cred wallet so they don't see two wallets sticking out off my behind (dead giveaway). Badge on chain around neck. Handcuffs on belt or in pocket.
Holding it all up can be a problem but not usually; just wear the right sized pants and belt. Suspenders do help if you can wear them, they drive me bonkers.
all the best,
GB
my advice is pack accordingly. if its broad daylight and you're going to walmart, skip the flashlight and the multi-tool. for me and my 30" waist, its gun strong IWB, spare mag weakside, walletfront left pocket, keys and cell phone front right pocket, and folding knife clipped inside right rear pocket. oh ya and a tube of chapstick in the little money pocket thing. keys and phone move to cargo pockets if i'm wearing cargo pants or shorts. i only carry a flashlight if its dark, and the multi-tool if i'm hiking or fishing or something along those lines.
Sounds like you're carrying too much on your belt, Batman. Definitely pare down what you carry and move some stuff to your pockets. :)
When I carry IWB (S&W 3913LS), the holster is the only thing on my beltline, except perhaps a cell phone (if not in shirt pocket). Gerber LST-II, keys, and Chapstick in right front pocket; pepper spray in left front (sometimes accompanied by very small flashlight); Uncle Mike's spare mag carrier in left rear pants pocket (3913's a single stack, so it's flat); and wallet in right rear. I'm a 32" waist, and if I carried a bunch of stuff on my belt under a shirt, I'd probably look like I was shoplifting or something. :)
you don't know what you'd do with a multi-tool, but you bring cuffs? Keep in mind there's a few LEOs in the forums here. Like someone else said - on or off duty, you're still a cop.
Also like others have said, a good belt is essential. I'm lucky enough my trouser belt that was issued to me fits the bill nicely. :)
On me:
-Bersa FireStorm .45 in El Paso Saddlery high-ride thumb-break holster on right hip, or EAA .38 snubbie in Uncle Mike's Pancake or IWB on right hip (4:00).
-Cell phone on left hip.
-(When I finally get it ordered and shipped) Spare magazine behind left hip.
-(Occasionally) Garrity LED 3AAA light in belt case in front of cell phone on left (only if I'm out walking at night, otherwise it's left in the car).
-Change, cash, folder knife (Kershaw Speed-Safe) and speedloader (if carrying a revo) in right front pocket,
-Keys in left front pocket.
-ID/Credit Card wallet in right rear pocket.
I don't see the need for much more than that. At 5'10" 165 lbs., that's enough to weigh me down some days. :uhoh: :rolleyes:
The point I didn't do a good job of making is not that he shouldn't have the cuffs, but that in real life you're more likely to need the multi-tool than the cuffs, even if you're an off-duty cop.
Where do most people carry their keys?
I've taken to carrying my J-frame in my front left pocket (I'm a leftie), and it has displaced my cell phone, so I've moved the cell to my waist in a case. Carrying a speed strip in the change pocket of my jeans, and my keys in my right front. But I also have life savers and spare change in the pocket with my keys, and it gets a bit crowded. Is it feasible to carry keys on a belt loop with a carabiner or something?
LMAO... you don't know what you'd do with a multi-tool, but you bring cuffs?
At least I don't have those to carry anymore. When I lived in CA, I worked as a bouncer for several years. After meeting a few of my ex customers on the street, I started carrying cuffs with me. Easier than holding them down, I figured.
I don't notice the weight so much now. Still need to do some adjusting, though. Changing out the flashlight helped, and in colder weather, my keys can go in a pocket, instead of a belt loop.
Yer overloaded, Batman. :D
What works for me is the SIG in a Comp-Tac C-TAC or Undercover, my cellphone, and the daily knife in the pocket. I don't feel compelled to carry a Leatherman, a flashlight, a tactial triple-mag reload, Batarangs, flares, smokers, Claymores, grappling hooks and rappelling gear, ceramic plates, MRE's, night vision, field ID guides, translation manuals, quad .50's or the 10th. Mountain Division's TO&E with me to the store.
Aside from the (small) keyring with house and truck keys, my wallet, and whatever change I have in my pockets, I feel pretty well equipped when I have the aforementioned SIG and knife. I let the professionals go places where someone with more stuff HAS to go. I just take care of me and mine, and stay out of the spotlight.
What am I going to with my light and multi-tool in Walmart? :banghead: Didn't think it really needed to be explained what those things are for, but here goes:
The light is for when it gets dark. Your obviously limited imagination can probably only come up with a power failure in Wal-mart as the reasoning, but I'm assuming you haven't quite developed the Transporter technology to the level Star Trek has, and you'll need to drive there. I suppose changing the tire on the side of the road at night could be done without a light, but why? Also, I might mention that cars are not infallable, and have been known to strand you on the side of the road at the most inopportune times. I guess if you can't figure out what a light and a multi-tool are for, you have no business under the hood of a car, but they are both good for that. For that matter, ever try to look down into the engine bay during the day when your eyes are adjusted for daylight? A flashlight sure comes in handy for that.
If you're the type that can't change their own tire and has no mechanical ability, then you really have no use for a multi-tool. If that's not the case, then I really shouldn't have to go through all the uses for a multi-tool.
as a matter of fact just three days ago i was at a chevron in broad daylight and used my flashlight to help a lady who had dropped her gas card into a space between two shelving units. I was able to spot it for her and retrive same. thank ya very much. ;)
How do I do it? I don't carry a flashlight or knife. I figure everytime I leave the house I'm going to a gun fight - and a knife and flashlight aren't something I bring to a gun fight. After dark, my H&K will provide all the illumination I need the first time I fire it.
I carry pretty much everything but the gun in my pockets. Typically, I wear BDUs (I'm not military, I just find them to be comfortable and practical) so I have a lot of pocket space. Kel-Tec P11 about 3:30 in Don Hume IWB, spare mag with Surefire G2 in left hip pocket, cell phone in right hip pocket, CRKT M16 in right back pocket, wallet in left back pocket, keys in right cargo pocket and sunglasses case in left cargo pocket. I need to get a Galco IWB for my new 1911 as well as a belt mag carrier. Unfortunately in my new job I'm not going to be able to wear my usual BDUs and I'm not sure how to fit some of the stuff in a pair of Dockers. I recently bought a Maxpedition Thermite Versipack so I can carry some stuff in there. Not sure what the company policy is on knives and guns left in cars though.
As for a gun belt I use a Wilderness Instructors Belt 1 3/4" with the stiffiner insert. Tightened up enough it supports a full sized 1911 no problem.
You'd be amazed how easy it is to carry all of this and I am not even using a "real gun belt", just a stiff Levi's belt.
I must admit that I usually carry a small revolver in the pocket but the P7 see's it's share of carry time.
Be practical. Use only what you need for the situation that might logically be encountered. On a Wal-Mart trip one doesn't (normally) need rappelling gear, shooting gloves, eye goggles, night vision gear, ear protection, flashight, grenade launchers, AR-15, multiple Leathermans, gas-mask, emergency smoke escape mask, quick-deployment ladders, traffic flares, or a first-aid kit, etc.
You're right. It does seem like fricking Batman. All you were missing on this trip was your Cape, fer crissake.
I use the Wildnerness stiff utlity belt and it easily handles my daily carry rig. My carry includes a 2-mag support side rig and a cell phone. I try to travel relatively light if possible. I do, however, carry an extra cape that I can always pull out if the need arises and put on over my Superman blue t-shirt.
Good luck and stay safe.
Two knives - you gots two handses!
In defensive knife fighting classes, you have two knives like Delicas as the knife is a tool of escape, so when you are grappled on one side, you got the other.
The Bat Belt is:
1. One semiauto of regular size
2. One mag
3. A Bug
4. Cell phone
5. OC
6. Surefire type flashlight
7. Backup small light, like a Photon
8. Two knives.
If you wear reasonable pants with pockets - like Cabelas Hiking pants and a cover shirt or vest, you can carry all this and not look looney. It's a small OC and Delica sized knives rather than bigger ones that are heavy. The BUG depends on what fits in one pants pocket. A Keltec, 642, even a Kahr PM9 type.
The more you get into it, the more you carry. Don't forget to have a long arm in your car and a bug out bag. When you start wearing a bullet proof vest, then you are over the edge :p
I carry most of that crap myself. I have a good gun belt, and it makes a world of difference.
You might want to find Ted Blocker out in Tigard, Oregon. He does excellent holsters, gunbelts, and stuff. He's work is top quality.
My mom took the concealed carry class a few days ago and on the way home she was saying the instructor told them how a fanny pack is pretty good for concealed carry. She said "I always wondered why I saw so many people wearing those things" :D
I still don't have an aswer to "Why do you need a multi-tool and flashlight in Walmart?"
Of course I have a couple of lights, multi-tool and set of real tools in the car. I just can't figure out why I would want to carry all of that stuff all of the time and in Walmart. If the lights go out in Walmart I think I just will follow the emergency exit sign and leave.
The Wilderness Instructor Belt is top quality. I have one that is about 13 years old and besides showing some wear it works great. I recently picked up another one just so I have one that looks good.
The one thing that I see that is blatantly missing from these guys that carry all these gadgets and gizmos all of the time is a life saving flotation device. You are going to need it if you fall into a body of water larger than a bath tub.
