Bummer. I had read somewhere that Sara Lee was acquiring Jimmy Dean sausage. Last night in the grocery store I looked at a roll of sausage and, sure enough, Sara Lee's name is in the fine print.

I switched to Tennessee Pride, and discovered it’s mighty fine. (I don't know who makes it; I'm almost afraid to find out. :) )

What does he mean ? (http://www.wagc.com/saralee.html)

Does he have another example ? (http://www.vcdl.org/static/gue.html)

Most of the sausage I buy and eat is from Nahunta, NC. I'm not a fan of most store-bought sausage.

Sara Lee bought the Jimmy Dean brand more than 9 years ago.

Sara Lee owns a whole pile of brands. If you want to know their full market basket go to their web site.

Heck, I think they own or owned Playetx and Fruit of the Loom at one point.

OTOH, I love Jimmy Dean Sage Sausage. Its the secret ingredient in my wife's awesome meat loaf recipe.

Why is this bad? Is Sarah Lee an anti company or something? I may have missed the point...

DonP,

I think you're right. The recent news item I was remembering was apparently a lawsuit by JD to get SL to quit using his name on the product:

http://bg.promomagazine.com/ar/marketing_jimmy_dean_files/

Regardless of when the acquisition was made, I think the folks here will be interested in knowing of SL's ownership when they make their choices in the supermarket. They can choose to not empower the gun-grabbers with their money or subscriptions.

Of course, most of the folks here probably already knew that. I'm just posting this for the ones a little slower to catch on, like me. :o

They also bounced Jimmy from his spokesperson role because he didn't represent the product like they wanted. ***?

Jimmy is probably too red-county for the bluenecks at Sara Lee; their perceived customer base would feel threatened.

They also own Hanes. That's why I prefer to use Gildan or Jerzees shirts.

And with the money Jimmy (probably) got out of the deal, he probably didn't lose any sleep over that.

Jimmy D. sold his company, including the brand name, for a big wad 'o cash and what they call a limited "Personal services contract" pretty normal when a single indisvidual represents the brand.

That contract requires his availability for use as a spokesperson for a set period of time. My hunch is that the time on the contract ran out and Jimmy is gettin a little gray around the temples and has low and dropping "Q" scores to serve as a spokesperson for a major brand. No judgement implied there (wish I had hair to get gray anywhere!).

FWIW, Commie's Ben & Jerry had to sell their ice cream company to Unilever a while back too and have the same deal. For the record, none of the money from Ben & Jerry's ice cream sales goes to their phony baloney political causes. It goes to the Unilever stockholders, which is primarily owned by a bunch of major pension funds, including some major unions too. That's why I love it when the Liberals start to go crazy on how evil big corporations are, all the time while they have their own money invested in them.

The Ben & Jerry's brand is now run by the Good Humor-Breyers ice cream brand people in Green Bay, Wisonsin.

the current social mission of Ben & Jerry’s will be encouraged and well-funded, which will lead to improved performance in this area; and an opportunity has been offered for Ben & Jerry’s to contribute to Unilever’s social practices worldwide

Sara Lee... real anti-gun
http://www.gunowners.org/a112497.htm
So now... do you... or do you don't... boycott Jimmy Deam Snausages?
This is old stuff, circa 97...
Boycott Sara Lee Corporation! Women Against Gun Control urges gun rights supporters everywhere to participate in a world-wide boycott of Sara Lee products. The boycott is to protest Sara Lee's presentation of its "Humanities" award to Sarah Brady, as well as its donation of $50,000 to the Center to Prevent Handgun Violence.

Stop buying products distributed by Sara Lee or its subsidiaries: Sara Lee, Ball Park, Hillshire Farm, Jimmy Dean, Aoste, Douwe Egberts, Hanes, Hanes Her Way, L'eggs, Bali, Playtex, Champion, Coach, Dim, Sanex and Kiwi. Let Sara Lee know that you disapprove of its efforts to undermine your Second Amendment rights. Call, write, fax, or email Sara Lee today!

I don't care who owns Ben & Jerry's. I still won't buy it. They still probably get some form of compensation form Unilever. Even if they didn't, their socialist, racist faces and names are still on the package.

I wonder what method Sara Lee uses to off the poor porkers for Jimmy Dean's sausage?

I thought the approved method was a gunshot to the head. Or are they still killing them with sledge hammers?

Inquiring minds want to know...

"I wonder what method Sara Lee uses to off the poor porkers for Jimmy Dean's sausage?"

Sara Lee, Oscar Mayer, Patrick Cudahy and most of the big sausage and bacon companies don't have killing floors at their plants anymore. They have distributed the killing and initial butchering to their suppliers. They receive the pork bellies, hams etc. ready for smoking or processing.

The exceptions are the operations offering Kosher Beef that still have the rabbi come in once or twice a week to butcher veal and steers according to the dietary laws. They do it the old fashioned way with a knife, and assure that only certain parts of the cattle are processed for Kosher use.

OK, now I understand. It IS gun-related, and WILL require a change in the recipe of my wife's wonderful meat loaf.

DANG! Sarah Lee will be required to donate $100k to JFPO before I will buy Jimmy Dean sausage again

And I'll bet Jimmy is not happy with their endorsement of Sarah Brady, either.

I just visited Ben & Jerry's factory in Vermont. They did explain that a percentage of the profit goes to the Ben Jerry's Foundation which is the uber liberal group. The employee panel of B&J get to pick which organizations will be supported. Sometimes it is a literacy program. It is owned by Unilever but the there is still monetary support to B&J Foundation from the ice cream profits.

How ARE the suppliers killing stock now? Shooting them I thought. So I guess Sara Lee figures it's "ok" to use a gun in the process as long as they aren't the ones doing it and don't have to watch?

Sidenote...

I worked in a Kosher chicken prosessing plant during my high school days. There was ALWAYS a Rabbi present. My job? Gutting the chickens, about 2500 on a good day. They always used a teenage boy for that particular part of the process because our hands were small enough fit inside the chicken and still strong enough to grab the guts.

One person I remember is "Stella" the plant manager. We non-kosher Gentiles would be eating a ham sandwich and washing it down with milk at lunch while Stella was going bananas telling us we were going straight to hell for doing so. It got to where we would do it just to hear her yell...

Hey, we were KIDS!

Then there was Mary, a 4 foot nothing 60 yo woman who could straight arm a full five gallon bucket up to you on a ladder :what:

One woman I know today is "selectively" Kosher. Inside her house she is 100% Kosher. That all ends one step out the door.

Here's some gun content, although it's been so long ago that I don't remember the eventual outcome. He lives on the James River east of town.

"A Richmond VA jury deadlocked in a civil trial involving Jimmy Dean, so the case will probably be tried again. A man sued Dean for $ 125,000. The plaintiff claimed that the entertainer/sausage magnate pulled a shotgun when he drove onto Dean's property."

Just so you don't think he's an old crank - he's not. Years ago when the James flooded, a friend of mine moved his old 32' Silverton down the river into an abandoned quarry to avoid the worst of the floating trees and cows. They had rafted up a bunch of boats to wait it out for a few days when a 141' yacht pulled up. It was Jimmy Dean in the Big Bad John. He had them all over for drinks and gave each of them packages of sausage when they left. :)

Maybe this will work as a substitute:

Tennessee Pride sausage (http://www.tnpride.com/Prod_info.asp?SeqNo=4

I seldom buy the sage, I always buy the "hot".
