What is the best way to remove rollmarks? I want to do away with the importer names on my Norinco before I refinish it.
Thanks,
Anthony

usually drawfiling rollmarks will take so much material as to alter shape or function. Find a realy really good welder and ask them to tig in the spots. A really good welder can do that without warping the piece or killing the heat treat of the whole thing. then file the weld spots flat.

Drawfiling is one way, but I prefer the use of a surface grinder. A good machinest with one of these can remove the rollmarks and insure the slide is true and parrallell. I can IM you a reccomendation of who to use.
No, it will not deminish the stregnth of the slide any appreciable amount if done correctly, it's not an uncommon thing to do.

Depends on how deep they are and where on the pistol.
Bill, what's a 1911 Online Instructor? Just curious.

I had a machinist friend refinish a table saw table for me with a surface grinder. It was cast iron with a ton of rust and pits. When I got it back it had a near mirror finish.

Surface grinding will give the best results. However, plan to spend about $75 on it. I got a quote once to remove the STI logo from a slide I got at a good deal and it was either $75 or possibly $50 a side. I plan on doing it with a flycutter on my mill. I know it won't be as nice of a finish as on a surface grinder but for me the time is cheaper than sending it out. I will of course re-polish the slide flats so when I'm done it will be better than surface ground. Quite frankly, before I spent $75 to $100 for said operation I would buy a new, bald aftermarket slide and be done with it.
