Is your EDC knife a weapon or tool?

We have probably heard all the arguments for both sides, but I'm curious about precentages.
Do you think of your everday knife primarily as a weapon or a tool?
I'll use me as an example. As a very last resort I suppose I could use my knife as a weapon, but I am unwilling to sacrifice any of it's "tool" capability to make it a better weapon. So I carry a knife that is light and has a thin blade (cuts better) instead of a heavy sharp pry bar.

I carry both. Tool is a leatherman wave, knife (weapon) is either a Sebenza or an Emerson (Commander, P-Sark or CQC7)

I like to know my knife will do ANYTHING I may have to do with it....so I carry one that I have confidence in for ANY occasion.
Besides, a weapon IS a tool.

Both a Spydy Delica as a tool and its not quite as scary so I can use it around the office and a MOD Tempest as a weapon.

I carry a nice folder. Yes, it could be used as a weapon. However, I have never had a need to use it as such. Have used it 1000+ times for daily uses though.
Could it be a weapon? Sure, and I'm prepared to use it as such. However, carrying a "weapon" is not really why I carry a knife.

Yeah, why isn't 'both' an option?
I carry a CRKT M16 or M21 as a 'weapon' and either a leatherman wave or any of a variety of swiss army knives as 'tools'.

Weapon? Sure, my Benchmade 806D2 could be used as one, but it's usually called into service to open boxes or cut steak at restaurants that always have the dull knives.
In a pinch, yeah, I'm sure it could do some damage. :neener:

Most tools double as weapons, as most things that are useful are dangerous.
I carry a SAK Tinker and a Spyderco Endura.
Both are good tools, and if pressed, both could be deadly weapons.

I carry my knife as a tool, got an early leatherman wich im kinda fond of and I swap around between about half a dozen small spyderco folders, depending on my mood or the latest purches. Ok so i collect spyderco folders.

In a clinch, any tool can be a weapon. The primary mission of a knife is as tool.

The way I look at this, my knife is about equal parts weapon and tool. That does NOT mean that I would use it as a weapon as often as I use it as a tool, but so what?
It is the purpose and nature of a tool to be used often.
It is the purpose and nature of a weapon to be used seldom, possibly not at all.
If you have an item that serves both purposes, and you use it as a tool daily but have never used it in anger as a weapon, you're doing it right. But if you train to use the thing to fight, then it's a weapon. No kidding yourself there.
If you don't train to use it, then I can see saying it's only a tool. Without training . . . .

I can't stand people that try to seperate knives into two categories....
:banghead:
Anything that can be used as a tool can be used as a weapon. A knife was the first thing aside from a mallet that was used as both tool, and weapon. It IS both. In fact, just about EVERY early tool, every BASIC tool was used as a weapon at some point.
If everything that COULD be used as a weapon was outlawed, do you have and idea how many things would be left that a person could carry. You couldn't even wear CLOTHES. I could strangle a man with my pants for crying out loud!!! :cuss: And that wouldn't even make a mess!!
I apologize but that one ALWAYS gets my fire going....

I've got a husky thing, it takes razorblades in a quick change setup. My gerber too sometimes, but two folders? Also have my Gerber Recoil multitool, which has a blade.

I know of quite a few people who carry multiple folders. My primary reason is around the office that big ol' black half serrated Tempest looks mighty mean. I can whip out the lil Delica and not many people will bat an eye.
The knife is my primary walking to and from work since my Kahr is on my ankle and a little trickier to access. If I get in a fight I'd rather have my MOD.

I carry one knife as a weapon that is designed as a weapon and that I practice with as a weapon and is never used to cut anything.I carry another knife that is used as a day to day tool.
I want the knife that I train with to always be sharp. If I used it for anything else it might not be sharp enough. This isn't saying that if I needed it for self rescue that I wouldn't use it that way, but it's role is self defense and it is very much designed for that purpose.

I carry two identical delicas. One is everyday user I use when something needs cut. It has a toothy edge. The other one has a more polished edge and is 'saved' for grooming, shaving or something I need a really sharp edge for.
Topic is pointless. Both.

I carry three knives every single day. One Kershaw assisted opener, one Gerber money clip, and one Schrade Old Timer with a 4.5" blade. :)
I like to think that all my bases regarding knives are covered.

I carry a cheap generic folding knife every day primarily as a tool. If I lose it or break it I won't cry a river, but its handy for everyday cutting tasks. In a pinch it will double as a weapon, but if I were specifically carrying a knife as a weapon I'd want a strong fixed blade knife rather than a cheap liner lock.
Its primarily a tool.

My knife is a tool. Its a tool that opens up things like cereal bags, appels, boxes and maybe a person if under the right circustance.

30 year old Case Sowbelly- It is a tool. It still has all three blades and I can open "anything" I need to with it.

Anything sharp and metal can and will be employed as both weapon and tool given the right circumstances. Knives are sharp and metal.

i carry a 6" gerber fixed blade in sheath on belt everyday use it for everything from opening boxes to cutting steak and peeling spuds i have found over the years that it tends to raise eyebrows from time to time but it also eliminates alot of unnecessary conversations and confrontations. i live in Vegas and sometimes just walking down street can be an adventure. it does help keep the street people and pan handlers at bay. I would have no qualms about using it as a close quarters weapon if the need arises.

I find that people who are not of the sheepdog mindset think of a pocket knife or EDC knife- even a Swiss Army Knife - as a weapon first and foremost.

My knife is a tool, the same as a firearm. If the job at hand requires physical harm to someone, it's still a tool for doing that particular job.

In public I carry a Spyderco Gunting in a custom belt sheath that I never use for utility purposes, and I also usually carry a small folding knife for utility work - either an SAK or a Spyderco Kopa. I never forget my Gunting, but occasionally I forget to carry the small folder, which is OK because I have a backup small folder in every briefcase, messenger bag and backpack that I use, plus a couple in my desk at work.

I answered tool, but if needed I'd use it as a weapon, heck, I'd use my briefcase and anyuthing else I could grap to use.
I carry it as a tool. My Case Mini-Trapper would pass this test. My BK-11, maybe not.
