Hello, everyone! Just wanted to introduce myself, Len, one of your newer members.

I've been looking around for a sensible, informative "gun site," and finally found "thehighroad.org," and liked what I was reading!

So, here's the basic bio...after college, military [US Army], then 15 years as an ER medic in a Detroit hospital. Five years in PC system admin, and now work the business/marketing/PR end of a non-profit health care outfit, all my accounts are in downtown Detroit.

Michigan CPL, NRA member, gun owner since my younger days in Texas. I have a great wife who was introduced to firearms when she was a little kid...[her dad was a retired Detroit firefighter, hunter and reloader.]

If guns are my "hobby," training Lab retrievers is my passion.

My "working" guns are both S&W's, the usual carry is a stainless 5906TSW in a Kydex paddle holster, the alternate is a 4566TSW in a Gould and Goodrich leather paddle, both using Federal Hydrashock as the carry loads. [Since I'm usually in a coat and tie, size isn't a factor.] My others are the "cowboy" types, a Ruger Single Six that I've had for years and cherish, a Ruger New Model Blackhawk 41 mag, a Winchester Model 94 .357, and finally the old standby, my Ruger 10/22.

Why do I carry? New vehicles + Inner City! That, and having survived an attempted carjacking at knifepoint several years ago. [Did not have a CPL at the time, so my only defense was fleet feet, and screaming like a girl!]

There ya go! Sorry about the length of this, but now everyone knows where I'm coming from...glad to be here!

Len.

Welcome aboard, Len.

My oldest son was in downtown Detroit a few weeks ago doing a software somethingorother on imaging equip at one of the hospitals. He's an IT type for a company in CA that specializes in imaging equip software.

I asked him if his company thought he was "expendable" sending him into downtown Detroit in a rental car. He made it OK, though.

Hrrmmmm, good dogs are these labs...
Seriously, don't ever drive one around on a jet-ski or teach 'em to jump off a diving board. You'll never get them to stop! Don't ask me how I know this.

Anyhow, I bid you welcome from kansas. Food's in the fridge and (usually) intelligent debate is on the screen. ;)

Welcome to the pack Len,

If you're buying the beer & ammo, I'll take some Barqs (root variety), and some .454 Casull. I gave up alcohol some time ago (I had my share and probably some of yours too) and if someone else is paying, I may as well get the expensive stuff. :D

Once again...Welcome!

Thanks for the welcome everyone, I appreciate it.

As to some of your replies, and the "rules" governing newbies...

The beer, real, root and Canadian, is on the back porch in the cooler...help yourself. [Leave some of the Bass Ale for me!] [I'll save the Booker's bourbon for when the conversation turns to hunting/shooting/bird dog exploits/lies! ]

Regarding working in Detroit...as with any "challenging environment," either urban or outdoor life, it's as safe as you are prepared. ;) Seriously, though, as with any big city, you just have to use common sense...and for those of you who have never been to Detroit, it's as good/bad as any other big city, and nowhere near as evil as the movies/media would have you believe!

As to dogs, jetskis, and water...I know, I know...these dogs are all obedience/field champs, but the only time I have trouble with a recall is when we're at Lake Michigan...it's heaven for retrievers, and the only thing that'll get them out of the waves is holding pork chops in the air. :D

As to the .454 ammo [or the .500 for that matter!] How can anyone afford to shoot those things without doing his own reloading?!!

Thanks again for the welcome!

Welcome, Len. Those are some great looking dogs. I've always had goldens but I've never met a lab I didn't like.

Around here you will learn alot and probably have some fun too.

I was in Detroit in Friday, and despite what you've been told, crack heads are not all asleep at 10:00 am. Some of them were busily drooling at the bus station.

Then yesterday, I was in Dearbon Heights and went in a store and came out and some jerk had let the air out of my tire. Why they did that and didn't slash it, I don't know, but I'm glad. I suspect it was the Rice for President bumper sticker, but that's just a theory. :(
