Nope, stick with the GI or IAI (IAI is an exact replica so GI parts WILL work).
$250-300 if in good condition....

i've had a couple over the years and they worked fine.....seems like they were mostly GI parts anyway.......250-300 would be about right.....DICK

The Plainfields will accept GI parts. I don't think their quality is as good as GI guns, however. I had an Iver Johnson Plainfield back in the '80s that had to go back to the factory because the bolt was too soft.
I now have a GI Carbine made by Underwood which is much nicer.

Not #1 quality, more like #2 but its much better than the late production Universals.

"...Nope..." Nonsense. Mine has given me no grief whatsoever in 30 some years that a bath didn't fix. Haven't had any parts break, but they do take issue parts and it'll use a 30 round mag with no fuss. It has an affinity for 110 grain HP over IMR4227.

Nothing wrong with them. I had one for many years.

Would you guys buy a Plainfield in very good condition for $350, or a NIB Auto Ordnance/Kahr for about $500? Which do you'll think is the better made M1 Carbine?

The Kahr is nicer, and will give you a warranty.
Is it worth an extra $150? Depends on you.
I'd rather get a GI for $500, but YMMV

My Plainfield has always worked flawlessly.. I have heard too much negative comments on the Universal that I will not own one. I had an Iver Johnson that did not work very well though and one example of a Plainfield that sucked too so who knows though? In fairness, some of the Iver Johnson problems were poor quality ammunition related.
Prices are so high for genuine US M1 carbines in my area that I do not consider them canidates for most any kind of shooting. I have never fired or owned an IAI or karh m1 carbine either.
