I am going to add a 1911 style .45 to my collection. I've shot a friend's and really liked it. Do I need to get one of the newer styles with the external pinned extractor like on the Wilson Combat KZ45 or stick with the original design. Which ones do you guys suggest?

Take a look at the Argentine Colts. For not a bunch of bucks you get a nice shooter, and you can spend the difference on some bells and whistles. You can wind up with a nice custom gun AND a piece of history for less money.

The Valtro is a work of art and the pics do not do its beauty justice. It is made of the best steel - hardened before machining and the final gun is hand fitted by John Jardine - these guns digest any and all ammo and with good ammo can shoot 1"@25yards and 3"@50yards.

The only caveat is that they options are almost non existent - I ditched the ambi and I may go with hard chrome, but thats about all there is...

+/- $1300-1400ish

If you are only going to have one... it needs to be a Colt... new rollmark Series 80s are going for less than $600 new in the box.

There are other options and I own other brands, but for a collection, if there's only going to be one sample... Colt.

Me Too! Got a new Colt Series 80 Commander for $550 about 9 months ago. Shot great right out of the box. Never a misfeed. Can't beat it for the money. And it loves my reloads.

Had a look at a Dan Wesson Pointman tonight at a local GS. Saw one earlier that had some "springyness" to the barrel hood. This one was nice and tight. Looks like a good pistol and it was priced at $490 or so.

If you can afford a Brown or Wilson...that would be my recommendation. Valtro...sure can't beat the price (if you can find one). Good Luck!

Everyone who owns one will tell you - as nice as the pictures look, they do not do the gun proper justice.

The fitting and the finish and the incredible attention to detail has to be seen to be appreciated. My favorite parts are the french border (the little groove running along the upper sides of the slide) the flattened and lined top and the very cool recessed area around the slidestop pin.

Mine is in the low 400s and I think he may be nearing 700 or a bit more.

I really think it will double in value in 10 years.
