Councilman Mentel is going to introduce ordinance (probably next Monday). NRA is having national convention here in 2007; every member should write, ask them to change location to friendly territory, and send copy of email to every Columbus City Council member and Mayor since he seems to be onboard also.

I complained rather bitterly to the OFCC gang when I first heard about the Convention. :cuss:

(The Councilman tried to introduce the same sort of legislation last year - I think it's a dead issue, but the Mayor seems to be in favor of anything that we aren't.)

I'm not 100% convinced, but it seems that Columbus was suggested before HB12 (OH's CCW) was passed, and the Convention there may be a slap in the Mayor's and Governor's faces. :neener:

However, I think the venue will be a CPZ - Criminal Protection Zone - as in "No Carry". :barf:

It appears that the NRA can't change now without cancelling the convention. I'm not sure that's correct, but this is what they're saying - remember that it's not easy to find exhibit space, bedrooms, etc., for a major convention, and that exhibitors have to plan for where and when they're going to be, too.

If I find out it's not a CPZ, I may just attend - I have reasons to visit Columbus.

However, my vote would be to move it someplace "Red", out of Franklin County. That'd slap some faces without screwing up most of the other issues. Dunno where, though - I'm 175 miles away.

Large conventions/trade shows CAN be changed on short notice, if the folks in charge are motivated enough. For example, a year or two ago, the Retail Tobacco Dealer's Ass'n. show was moved out of Orlando just a couplemonths before it was to take place. Reason? The passage of a 'no smoking' law in Florida that was thought by the conventioneers to be particularly onerous.

Whether the NRA could be similarly persuaded to change venues, assuming passage of a Columbus "Assault Weapons" ordinance is a matter of conjecture.

Btw, several years ago the Ohio Gun Collecetor's Assn. moved their six-times-a-year meetings out of Columbus, after the city leaders passed a similar "ban". It was estimated to have cost Columbus about $15 million income per year.

Columbus already has an ordnance restricting mag size, it can be found on the NRA’s web-page. I live out in Reynoldsburg, which had no ordinances against weapons that I’m aware of. No offence to any Ohioans but I can’t wait till sometime next year and I get out of this anti-state. Too bad I won't be going back to my home state of Tennessee. :(

I also live east of the city, but I'm very concerned about this new proposed semi-auto ban (not to mention the current mag capacity limit). I work in Columbus and I drive on 270 often enough that this will seriously affect me.

I haven't read the entire ordinance but if I understand what I think I know, my SA XD9SC with the 15 round magazine is an assult weapon under this ordinance.

Ohio Gun Laws from the NRA website (http://www.nraila.org/GunLaws/StateLaws.aspx?ST=OH)

The Columbus ordinance prohibits possession of a semi-automatic: centerfire rifle or carbine that accepts a detachable magazine with a capacity of 20 rounds or more; shotgun with a magazine capacity of more than 6 rounds; handgun that is either a modification of a rifle described above, or a modification of an automatic firearm, or was originally designed to accept a detachable magazine with a capacity of more than 20 rounds.

Exempt are firearms that use .22 caliber rimfire ammunition with a detachable magazine with a capacity of 20 rounds or less.

The Columbus ordinance also prohibits possession of a magazine or device which holds more than 20 rounds of ammunition to be fed continuously into a semi-automatic firearm except a magazine designed to hold only .22 caliber cartridges.

Give em heck at the public hearing guys. Not only is this enough to get ones panties in a knot, but some of us planned on moving up to that general area and would rather not deal with this...<Censored>...

Good luck. :banghead:

You know, I've heard that Columbus has more homosexuals per capita than San Fransisco. Must be all the politicians. :barf:

(Sorry, I had to.).
