I am planning on shooting in some high power rifle matches this summer.
I will be using my reloads in my M1.My load is 43.9gr of IMR4895 using the 168gr sierra match. It is on the low end in velocity,2500fps.On my good day,I can group off sandbags 2 to 2.5 inches at 100yds.Theses Matches,we will be shooting at 200yds reduced.

Question:Would it be best to boost the velocity up around 2700fps(max load in manual) for shooting in these Matches?
Thanks
Paul

If you are only going to shoot at 200, I would say no. The amount of wind deflection you will save from going a tad bit faster will be negligible at that range. Save your barrel and your shoulder. You'll also get a little more time on target in the rapids.

pdh, I am kinda surprised that that light load will cycle a garand! In my limited experience, 46 gr of 4895 is a light load.

Check your load books, too!

Sierra shows 47.4 gr. 4895 as maximum load with 168 gr. bullet in 30-06.

I load 47 gr. H 4895 in my M1's w/168's. The 47 gr. load closely duplicates M72 GI match ammo in both velocity and zeroes in my M1. This load is a little hot for my bolt guns in which I use 45.5 gr. H 4895.

Definately advise working up slowly to these loads as they are not reduced loads.

As long as your rifle functions properly with your load, I'd shoot it at short range.

hps

Does anyone out there use the 150gr match with good success?
