Of all the different brands and types of .40 S&W, what would you use in the G27... assuming it's primary use is for protection?

I've always used the cheap 180gr Winchester that you can pick up at Wal-Mart for $8.95/box. It's what I've always shot at the range, so I've just stuck with it since I'm familiar with the way it shoots and it's also nice that the price is right! I saw some rounds at my local gun store that were $12 for 10! I can't remember the details of it, but it had in pretty letters all over the packaging how it was the most powerful and absolute best round for self-defense. At over a buck a bullet I wasn't sold :)

Should I maybe switch to a hollow-point or some other reasonably priced ammo though since this is my primary CCW gun?

Whatever you do, go to www.tacticalforums.com and search the 'terminal effects' forum for .40 S&W. You will learn more than you ever wanted to know.

Then buy whatever round DocGKR recommends.

It'll be either Winchester 180gr. Ranger or 180gr. Gold Dot, if i remember right.

I shoot Winchester WB at the range, and carry 180gr Gold Dots.

I use whatever on the range,usually speer lawman or AE. For carry i use corbon 135g.

For larger guns like the Glock 23 I long ago settlend on full-power 165 grain JHP loads, such as the Gold Dot as loaded by Speer or Pro Load, or the Remington Golden Saber. I used to keep the same load in a Glock 27, but recently switched to the current FBI load, i.e., the Federal 165 grain HydraShok JHP. The recoil on the HydraShok is considerably lower, and it still meets the FBI protocols for penetration. Frankly, I'd rather get that front site back on target as fast as possible rather than try to reap the questionable benefit of the extra foot-pounds cranked out by the hotter loads.

I use Proload 180gr (Gold Dot bullets). These have almost the same velocity from my Glock 27 as they do from my Goock 23:

1021fps from my Glock 23,
1004fps from my Glock 27.

What ever you decide, make sure your POA and POI are the same. I've seen some radical changes whhen switching bullet weights. Don't have a .40, but really am impressed by Gold Dot bullets.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I'll definitely stick with the $9 Winchester for the range. Speer Gold Dot looks promising also. I've found it online for $12/box. Anyone know if some big retail places like Wal-Mart sale it for cheap? I looked the last time I went into walmart but couldn't see it anywhere on their shelves.

Try extreme-quality 135g JHP's from certain manufacturers ;) , or R-P 155g JHP.

My G23 likes 'em, it shoots to POA and more accurate compared to heavier variety.
