President's going to do briefing now.

chaim
March 19, 2003, 09:46 PM
Fox has reported air raid sirens in Bagdad. They are showing AA being fired from the ground.

All the networks have interrupted broadcasting to cover it. NBC is now reporting that the President will be on the air for a statement soon.

Looks like it is on. Let us hope and pray it goes quickly and smoothly with a minimum of casualties on both sides.

New:

While typing this Ari Fleicher just announce "the war is now on" and walked off.

Wow, I guess we were both watching TV from our computers. See my thread in Legal and Political, "Sounds like it has started". (http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=14447)

Moderators: The start of the war is big news, I don't know if you want two threads in two different sections (these will likely become large threads). If not may as well merge them here (more viewings).

All: President will be on at 10:15 (just under 30min)

Unless this is just the prelim with cruise missiles, doesn't it seem a little odd to start this thing in daylight, given our night time advantage?

Reports of explosions now.

Of course it could be the sound of the Iraqi Army suddenly going to "condition brown'.

Interesting; now they're saying it was a cruise missile strike on a target of opportunity... Mmmmm now what whould that be? Saddam or one of his cronies, disguised in a burka and sneaking out on a camel?

Perhaps it is to give the Iraqi army every opportunity to surrender without getting shot.

Well, our long planned "war" against Iraq is under way... I don't know why, but I believe we have opened Pandora's box! Iraq is a weak military power. They never would have been able to hurt the US directly. Our 50 year allies want no part of this. Why? So here we go, the "war" has begun! Are we all going to sleep better tonight?

Interesting. MSNBC just reported that "Pentagon sources" are reporting that the target of opportunity was in fact Sadaam Hussein. Apparently they got some good intelligence about his possible whereabouts. Be interesting to see if they got him. If we are lucky, this could be a really short war.

Iraq has an entire country for resources - but they can't hurt the US directly.

Osama bin Laden had to hide in Third World perstholes - heck, he can't hurt the US directly.

Iraq has an entire military at it's disposal - but they can't hurt the US directly.

Osama bin Laden just had his followers - everyone knows he couldn't hurt the US directly.

Iraq has factories, workers, scientists, universities, a technology base - you say they can't hurt the US directly.

Osama bin Laden had to beg, borrow, steal or rent everything. He had to train pilots in the US - at least he couldn't hurt the US directly.

Iraq is a country - it can't hurt the US directly.

Osama bin Laden was a pitiful little leader of a fanatic group - who couldn't hurt the US directly.

Iraq can't hurt the US directly - how much bigger is Iraq compared to al Queda?

Osama bin Laden couldn't hurt the US directly...until he dropped two towers and three thousand people on our heads.

bin Laden has maybe 500 directly committed followers when he caused people to jump to their deaths one hundred stories above concrete rather than burn to death - al Queda on a good day isn't even one Republican Guard platoon.

No direct threat, my fuzzy tail. If Iraq isn't a direct threat, then Osama bin Laden's attack on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon wasn't a direct threat either.

Let's not open Pandora's Box! Let's just keep minding our own business and maybe, just maybe, Sept 11 Part 2 won't happen.

Let's roll over to have our tummies scratched, and maybe a madman with an army that Osama bin Laden didn't have, and a navy that Osama bin Laden didn't have, and an air Force that Osama bin Laden didn't have, and chemical weapons that Osama bin Laden didn't have, maybe that madman won't blow up something else on American soil.

Pfagh. We tried being nice. We tried diplomacy. We tried sanctions. We didn't open Pandora's Box. The only thing that got us was three thousand dead Americans crashing into New York dirt in a flaming pyre.

For the sake of the so-called Free World, a small part of me hopes that maybe, just maybe, it would be a good thing if they decapitated the Iraqi govt. in killing Saddam. If not, I am afraid that in the coming days, mixed in with the burning oilwells would be the smell of burnt flesh and a gentle breeze carrying gases like Sarin and VX. I hope that the coalition forces are safe, as well as the innocent civilians of Iraq. Some people in these forums would love to see all the Middle East nuked and turned to glass, but really, what is the point?
I am more scared of Bush than any backwoods 3rd world country thug, any day. Flame me, call me a troll, whatever...this man is the Antichrist. I hope Bush has a big old heart attack or stroke, soon.

For sake of a bigger argument, this is all about oil. You can swear up and down that oil doesn't have a damned thing to do about this war, but I believe it is the BIGGEST factor. Knocking off Saddam and reshaping Iraq to your liking will give America another solid and reliable source of gas and oil. It's the American way. If ya want something, go take it by force. I can't stand my government, because we just about give it away to the States. How many Americans know this.....94% of the natural gas in the States comes from Kanada, and we have taken over #1 spot in oil exports to you, surpassing Saudi Arabia, Venezuela and others. OIL, it's what makes the world go round......now I can't wait til the day when you are out of fresh, unpolluted drinking water.........that will be the day you declare my PM as a terrorist, and how the regime must be changed. (Although my PM is a bit of a retard).
That brings me to my point, which is this.....how many more countries, ones in which you you don't like their policies, will you go into by force and change the "regime" and set up a puppet government? Only time will tell.
Oh, I'm not really an Eskimo, I just live far enough North to almost count. And they are called Inuit now, not Eskimos.

You seem to be one of these folks who is confusing their hatred of G.W. with an intelligent position...he's just doing his job (rather well at the moment, it seems).

Calling him 'the Antichrist' or hoping for him to have "the big ole heart attack or stroke soon" just lowers your credibility and does nothing by way of proposing alternatives.

"Intellectually bankrupt" might be an apt analysis for that sort of behavior.

That's a great idea about the water!

Fox News said that broadcast certainly looked like a tape. I thought it was a hoot, watching the old man read from his little legal pad, with his big coke bottles on. I expected something more firey from a madman; perhaps he's getting senile?

We'll see if we see something definately live from Saddam anytime soon. They can tell, often, if it's live or if it's a tape.
