A friend of mine is moving from Idaho to Connetticut (sp). He has several guns that have not been transfered on 4473s for one reason or another. There are way too many for him to pack on a plane. How does he move the guns legally?

You can legally ship a gun to yourself interstate if it's for lawful purposes. The only problem is finding a counter clerk who is reasonable enough to understand this or take the effort to confirm it. Many of them will shreik in horror and tell you that it 'couldn't' possibly be legal to ship an evil gun, but I digress. That will probably get expensive though.

If he drives, he would be covered under FOPA if he doesn't make any detours.

break the guns down, wrap SECURELY, perform "shake tests" on the packed contents before taping, there should be NO NOISE; DOUBLE BOX & address, go to FedEx & ship no longer than 2-day economy. works pretty well.

The problem is that, in a move from Idaho to Connecticut (now WHY would anyone do that?), with a 2-day shipment it's very possible that the guns will arrive before our hero is there to receive them. If your friend knows someone ... anyone ... near his future home, he can ship to himself at their address, even in care of a third party. He just neeeds to instruct whoever will be receiving the guns that they are not allowed to open the package(s).

In my case, I live in a small town and have a first name relationship with the owners of the local UPS Store franchise. I could work with them to set up the shipment, but have them hold the packages for a couple or few days before they get picked up, in order to allow time for me to arrive at the destination before the guns get there. It's worth considering, but only if your friend knows he can rely on the shipping center.
